Andria Pacione stated that language beneath a language; that is poetry. Meanwhile,
the other poets, such as Robert Lowell stated that poetry is not the record of an event: it is an
event. W.H. Auden mentioned that in poetry, there are two demanding points in poetry. First,
it must be well-made verbal object that does honour the language where the poetry is written.
Second, it must say something significant about a reality common to tell, but perceived form
a unique perspective. He added that when the poet says he has never been said before, but,
once he has said it, his readers recognize its validity for themselves. Besides, in general,
poetry can be said as an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning,
sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response. Yet, actually
there is no infinite definition of poetry since define a poetry is like catching the wind. Here is
the example of modern poetry:

The Moon
By: Jane O Ullah
I love to play in the moonlight.
To see the stars smiling at me
Through the thickness of the night
Which wraps itself snugly round the stars
I love to see the moons
Fat and fair face laughing with me.
Like a benevolent father beaming at his newborn.
Like a single currant in a black pudding
In a star studded pudding
But at times I wonder
On why it seems dull and thin
Then tis as though its sad
As though its nightly revelry has been disturbed
But all the same,
I love to play in the moonlight

In poetry reading or poem reading, there are many things to be considered. The first
thing is Poetic language and Imagery. In poetry, the language used is rather different with
daily language. To make it beautiful, a poet uses a poetic language and imagery to deliver the
idea of poetry. The second one is the sound and sense. Reading poetry cannot be compared
with reading a news, debate or speech. It needs an expression through sound and sense that
come out from the students feeling. The next is audience reaction. Actually, reading poetry
needs the audience reaction, whether they are confused, puzzled, happy, and sad or anything
else. The last but not the least is the topic in which the students write an original, fresh,
surprising and unusual topic. Topic is the major concern for the teacher since deciding the
topic in writing poem can determine how the students read the poem in front of the class.

In poem reading, body language and expression are the most concerned parts since
body language and expression shows the sense and determines the audiences expression.
Meanwhile, poetic language and imagery are put the second. It doesnt mean to make it less
important but poetic language and imagery are nothing if the poem is not spoken regarding
the skill of the rubric. Sound and sense, audience reaction and topic get 3 as their weight
4

since it can be tolerated if the students cannot make a perfect sound and sense, good topic or
make the audience into a confusion.
