Title: College Student Time Management: Correlations With Academic Performance
and Stress
Author: Therese Macan, Comila Shahani, Robert Dipboye, Amanda Phillips
Date: December 1990
In the article College Students Time Management: Correlations With
Academic Performance and Stress, authors Macan, Shahani, Dipboye and Phillips
discuss the correlations between a students ability to manage their time, their
grade point average, and stress levels. The article starts by discussing the past
research that has been done on this particular topic. The authors have found that
the past research that has been conducted has focused on the change in grade point
averages and stress after time management training, whether trained by reading a
book, or instruction from a peer or a professional. The past research studies found
that it helps others re-prioritize where students spend their time, but has not
specifically showed that stress is reduced after time management training is
completed. By reviewing past research on the topic, the authors decided to conduct
research on the natural tendencies of individuals time management skills in
correlation to stress and performance.
Based on information provided by a university, students who are able to
manage their time property also show less signs and symptoms of mental health
disorders. The study conducted by the authors was designed around the
information sample that was provided by the university. The study hypothesized a
positive correlation between time management and grade point average. Students
who participated in the study were asked to take surveys relating to the topics of
employment, activities, personal opinion of their time management, and stress
levels due to work overload and outside factors. The results of the study showed
that those who reported proper time management also had less stress and anxiety
about their future, had a higher grade point average, and an overall happier life.
