Subject: Job Postings/Internships
Upon graduation this coming spring (May 2017), I would like obtain a full time position for a
company using my Animal Science & Equine Science degree. I have done some research and
found a few possible jobs for me to consider and apply for. Here I will break down each of these
job postings and decide which one would be the best for me.
Part 1
The first job I found is with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, as an Animal Care Technician. I am
qualified for this job because I will have my Bachelors degree, and I also meet their other
requirement by having animals all of my life providing me experience handling a wide variety of
species. In addition, I fit their requirements to assume responsibility, work independently, and
work with others as I have done all of this before, most notably at my internship with the
University of Minnesota. Also, I found a yearlong internship with Colorado State University as
an Equine Breeding Farm Intern. They are looking for someone who recently completed their BS
in Equine Science or Animal Science, which I will have completed both by May. I also am
qualified by having a valid drivers license and eligibility to work in the US, in addition to
having horse experience and an interest in equine reproduction. Another internship that I am
interested in is through Trans Ova Genetics for a Cattle Herdsman Internship. Having my
Bachelors degree in Animal Science qualifies me for this position and also being able to work
outdoors as I have in many jobs in the past. A fourth position is at the Kentucky Equine Research
as an Equine Nutrition and Exercise Physiology Intern. Again having my Bachelors degree in
Animal Science and horse experience qualifies me for this position. They are also looking for
knowledge of computers, specifically Word and Excel, which I know quite a bit about. Also,
being dependable, hard-working and willing to get dirty, that all can be seen in my previous
job experience and my supervisors can vouch for. Lastly I found a position through Land O
Lakes, as a Purina Feed Sales and Marketing- Show Feed Intern. I meet their qualifications of
pursuing a bachelors degree in animal science, along with my experience with horses and show
animals. Along with the requirement of possessing a valid drivers license, good driving record,
organizational and time management skills.
Part 2
Kentucky Equine Research is located in Versailles, KY, the home of some of the most famous
horse farms in the Bluegrass region (Commonwealth of Kentucky, n.d.). This gives them a good
sample of the equine industry that they can get feedback and help from on their research. It also
allows them to easily be able to share the knowledge that they acquire from their research. Their
mission statement exemplifies how important it is to them to share their knowledge; Kentucky
Equine Research (KER) is an international equine nutrition, research, and
consultation company serving horse owners and the feed industry. KERs
goals are to advance the industrys knowledge of equine nutrition and
exercise physiology, apply that knowledge to produce healthier, more

athletic horses, and support the nutritional care of all horses throughout their
life. (Whitehouse, n.d.). It also shows the devotion to their clients and their
horses. They work for them, to be able to better the horses lives and
abilities. Also, their Facebook page is mostly filled with scholarly articles they
have shared and other tips and bits of knowledge they share with their
followers.
Land O Lakes shows their pride in feeding the world with this portion of their
purpose statement, Land OLakes, Inc. has been farmer owned since 1921 with farmers
values providing a guiding force for the way we do business. Farmers have always had an
unwavering commitment to feeding the planet and protecting it for future generations. Like our
owners, we believe we have a higher purpose in our communities and in the world. (Land O
Lakes, 2016). Since farmers own the company they know the value of raising food and feeding it
to their families. They have a desire to feed the growing world population, but most of all they
have a plan and continue to grow each year. They value their customers and their stockholders,
as they are the reason that the company is still around. Also, they partner with other companies,
such as Tractor Supply Co. and can share their successes with each other. Another thing that is
great about Land O Lakes is their Delete the Feed Campaign, which they started to raise
awareness on hunger in the United States. With this program they donate meals for every picture
of food that people delete from their Instagram account. Their goal is to donate 2.75 million
meals, comparable to a $250,000 donation (Richards, 2016).

Writing cover letters and resumes would differ for these two positions. For the internship at
Kentucky Equine Research, my cover letter would highlight my assistance with a research study
at the University of Minnesota and my desire to continue research. My resume for this internship
would focus on my jobs with horse experience, in addition to the fact that riding horses is a
hobby of mine and this provides me with even more horse experience. This experience with
horses would not be the main focus in a resume or cover letter for the Land O Lakes internship.
Instead I would focus on nutrition courses I have taken, and also organization and time
management skills. It would also be beneficial to note about my job at the agri center that I
worked in the store and gained experience in sales. My cover letter would show these differences

for the application of each because all internships and positions are looking for different specific
training, skills and interests. I would most like to work for Land O Lakes, mostly because of the
location of the internship. It is near to home and that is where I would like to end up. In addition
to location, I agree with the values of this company and appreciate what they do for the
community. I really like that the company is farmer owned and focus on what they can do for our
world. I believe they would be looking for employees with these same values. One of their main
goals is to aid in feeding our growing population, by producing seeds to grow food and feed for
the animals that also feed our world. In addition to that, they even donate meals to those that
cannot afford them on their own. This company is devoted to providing for others, while still
growing their company and providing for their own families.

Understanding of animal husbandry,
management practices, nutritional guidelines
and industry knowledge

Strong interpersonal communication ability

Excellent organizational and time management
skills

experience are strongly preferred.

My Example
I will graduate with a double major in Animal
and Equine Sciences with an Agribusiness
minor, this coming May of 2017
Many college courses such as: Intro to
Agricultural Management, Farm/Agribusiness
Management, Intro to Animal Nutrition,
Fundamentals of Nutrition, Applied Animal
Nutrition, Dairy & Equine Industry &
Production Systems
Completed a college public speaking course,
able to effectively communicate with others in
a professional manner,
A full time student with a near full time job,
along with being involved in extracurricular
activities and care of horses while attending
school require constant organization and
efficient time management skills.
Can provide proof of a current license and
have no bad driving record.
As an intern at Cannon Falls Agri Center, I
worked behind the counter selling supplies,
chemicals and feed.

I would benefit this organization because of my desire to work in feed sales and also with my
belief that nutrition is so important to our animals. I am hard-working and always wanting to
learn more so I could be of greater use to the company, creating a larger profit and finding new
customers. By meeting all of the qualifications for the job, I would be a good addition to the
organization.

Ag Business Recruitment
4001 Lexington Ave N
Arden Hills, MN 55126-2998

Dear Ag Business Recruitment Team,

I am applying for the Purina Feed Sales and Marketing- Show Feed Intern position as posted on
your website September 22, 2016. I have a strong desire to sell feed and bring knowledge of
nutrition with a willingness to learn more.
I will earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in both Animal and Equine Science with an AgBusiness
minor upon graduation this May from North Dakota State University. I have taken a variety of
courses to guide me as I take a position such as yours. This past summer I worked as an Intern at
Cannon Falls & Nerstrand Agri Center, where I spent some time behind the counter completing
sales for feed and other products. I took it upon myself to learn about the feeds we offered for the
chance of someone coming in that didnt know what they wanted. I also spent the last two
summers as an Intern at the University of Minnesota Equine Center, working with their horses
with special conditions and a variety of eating habits. I enjoyed looking at the feeds they were
getting compared to their conditions to see if thats what I thought they should be getting fed.
I learned many skills between this internship that give me confidence in applying them for your
position. I have attached a copy of my resume and can send references if you would like. I look
forward to learning more about this position from you. I can be contacted at 651-497-5970 or
hayley.sauber@ndsu.edu.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

Hayley Sauber
