Librarian Job

People see librarians around the world in public libraries and in college campuses, but
there is more to it than that. They have been around for many generations. The oldest history of
libraries goes back to at least 2600 B.C.E., found within abandoned temple rooms in the ancient
city of Sumer. One of the most famous of the ancient libraries is the Library of Alexandria. It had
prospered with many scholars venturing there since its creation in 3 B.C.E. all the way to the
Roman conquest of Egypt, which may have eventually led to its demise. Many ancient libraries
may have been destroyed either accidently or intentionally, but the method of the library system
has been adapting over time with the creations of new libraries over many generations. The
oldest library in China is the Tian Yi Ge, which was founded in 1561, its name means One Sky
Pavilion.
Librarians are the people who categorize, circulate and take care of books and other
materials. There are different areas that a librarian can work in. These other locations include
businesses that have a library that holds all of their records of all of their work. National
libraries are where publishers get permission and authority to publish materials and it also has

material about the state. College libraries in the modern era have most of their books online, but
they do have books available for a quick look. Museums also have librarians to take stock and
management of their material as well.
While being a librarian is difficult, it does have many rewards. By having a career in
library service and management, all the information in their materials and resources will be
preserved for future generations. Being part of a community library means helping other people
connect and get in touch with other people in the community and interacting with them. One of
the greatest rewards to earn is the experience of the career.
You dont need to have any particular undergraduate major to be a librarian, but having a
masters degree in library and information science (MCIS) would be a great deal of help if you
want to be a librarian. Most librarians also have a background in the humanities and social
sciences, and they tend to be the most sought after. Taking classes in a school specific to libraries
would really help in getting a job in the field.
Being a librarian is not an easy task. They have to make sure that the books are being
processed in, having to put them where they belong, and many of them would need to either
know where materials are quickly or have experience with the computer systems of the library.
Another important skill needed is the usage of currency and properly handling money.
With the proper techniques of care, the librarian can help insure that the materials last for
a very long time. This includes how to properly place a book, how to remove a book safely, and
other book management skills. Example: a safer way to remove a book from a shelf is to place a
finger in the middle of the pages, then gently tip it slightly towards you.
Another job involving in the library service is the circulation job. Circulation is the
processing and keeping inventory on the libraries materials. It is used to keep track of what

books are available and what books are being used. It also tells what materials are missing and
who used them last and it also is used to order new materials for the library.
The reference job is used to help aid the individual locate a specific book or a
recommendation for material. The reference desk must be patience and polite when dealing with
someone. They can also direct the person where the exact locations of the related materials are
being kept.
An academic librarian is really different than a public librarian. Rebekah Cummings (an
academic librarian at the University of Utah) talks about the difference. An academic librarian job is
kind of like a hybrid job of librarian/professor. We teach, research, provide services to students and faculty,
spend countless hours in meetings and on committees. . ..

Since public libraries are funded by the

government or the public, academic librarians get paid more, have many higher quality materials
and sources.
The world of books is found to be inspiring. It opens the mind to imagination and
creativity. Working in a library allows people to not only maintain the books and all of their
knowledge for future generations but, it also gives them the chance to interact with people and
help those that need assistance. Being close to so much knowledge, creativity as well as having
the opportunity to help and inspire people sounds like the career of a lifetime.
