How will your personal background enable you to be successful in this field?

Creative arts therapists work with children and adults in a variety of settings such as rehabilitation facilities,
hospitals and schools. An employment opportunity in Canada from indeed.com is mental health councellor
in Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority. I am a creative, enthusiastic, non-judgmental person with
strong communication and interpersonal skills. I have flexibility and a tolerance for ambiguity and take
initiative. With my personal background working with children in schools and personal skills set, I will be
better able to design and implement innovative therapy programs and employing artistic techniques (alis,
2016).

An art therapist can work with individuals, couples, families or in group settings and use artistic media to help
clients maintain and improve their mental and physical disabilities or injuries by recognizing and developing
personal connections. They will usually set up an appointment and treat patients or work in workshops.

Based on Hollands occupational themes, art therapy involves: teaching, training, enlightening, curing and
developing others; working with forms, designs and pattern and the creative expression of ideas and
emotions; and analytical thinking (Art Therapy, 2016)

What kind of education and training are required?

Art therapists require a bachelor's degree in psychology (or a related discipline), a master's degree in
art therapy and and a strong background in art, dance or drama.

The overall hourly wage according to ALIS (2016), are $19.25 starting, $35.52 average, and $48.73
maximum. With the average wage, creative arts therapists can make $59,082.00 annually. There are

Most likely, art therapists are located in hospitals and counselling centres and clinics, schools, nursing
homes, community agencies, prisons and in private practices. Art therapists may remove toxic art supplies
or sharp instruments such as scissors for safety reasons depending on the setting and client group. Music
therapists may be required to lift and carry instruments and equipment.
