2nd Semester, A.Y. 2010-2011

LONG EXAM 2
January 17, 2011, 4-6 PM
Instructions/Reminders:
1. No one will be allowed to leave the examination room for the entire duration of the exam.
2. Write your name, student number, and section on the upper right hand corner of every page. Do not write at the
back of your answer sheets. Use only black or blue pens for your solutions. Do not use correction fluid.
3. Cheating in any form will be penalized with a grade of 5.0 and possible expulsion.
4. Turn off cellphones and other communication devices.
5. Indicate units in all computations and write all of your assumptions.

Problem 1. An aluminum cylinder and a bronze cylinder are centered and secured between two rigid
slabs by tightening two steel bolts as shown below. At 10C no axial loads exist in the assembly. The
geometric and material properties of the different bars are given in the table below:

If the temperature of the entire assembly is increased to 90C, and the internal force and deformation in
the two steel bars is the same due to symmetry, determine the following:
1. Given that the forces in each of the steel bars are the same, what is the degree of static
indeterminacy of the assembly?
a. 0
b. 1
c. 2
d. 3
2. If the force in each of the steel bars is PS , the force in the aluminum bar is PA , and the force in
the bronze bar is PB , which of the following statements is FALSE?
a.

2 PS + PA =
0

b. 2 PS + PB =

c. PA = PB

0
d. PA + PB 2 PS =

3. If A , B ,and S are the changes in lengths in the aluminum, brass and steel bar due to internal
forces PA , PB and PS respectively, and TA| , TB ,and TS are the changes in lengths in the
aluminum, brass and steel bars respectively due to the increase in temperature from 10C to 90C,
which of the following statements is FALSE?
a. TA| , TB , and TS will always be positive, since all bars will expand due to an increase in
temperature.

TA A LA T where A is the coefficient of thermal expansion of aluminum, LA is equal to

b. =
the initial length of the aluminum bar before the temperature was increased, and T is the
increase in temperature which in this case is equal to 80 C.
c.

d.

2 ( TS + S ) = ( TA + TB ) ( A + B )

4. Which force given below is closest to the internal force in the steel bar after the temperature is
increased from 10C to 90C? Show your solution to support your answer.
a. 8.44 kN
b. 16.88 kN
c. 33.75 kN
d. 67 .5 kN
5. Which stress is closest to the stress in the bronze bar after the temperature is increased from
10C to 90C?
a. 18.75 MPa compressive
c. 33.75 MPa compressive
b. 28.12 MPa compressive
d. 67.5 MPa compressive

Problem 2. A gap of 0.18 mm exists between the rigid bar and bar B before the load P is applied on the
system shown below. After load P is applied at the middle of the rigid bar, the axial strain in rod B is
-2500 m/m. All bars are made of steel (E = 200 GPa). Due to symmetry, the internal axial load on bar A
on the left is the same as that on the bar A on the right. Knowing that AA = 100 mm2 and AB = 150 mm2.
Determine the applied load P.

Problem 3. The shaft consisting of steel and aluminum segments carries the torques T and 2T as shown
in the figure below. Find the largest allowable value of T if the working shear stresses are 83 MPa for
steel and 55 MPa for aluminum, and the angle of rotation at the free end must not exceed 6. Use G = 83
GPa for steel and 28 GPa for aluminum.
