Millennials

their traveling habbits and how to understand them

By: Courtney Smith

Introduction

Millennials love to travel. With the

amount of people that could populate France
this is a large section of people. They travel
more than 4.7 times a year for business and
4.2 times a year for leisure. This is more than
any other generation. With that many people
it may seem difficult to find what will make them
go. It is not a difficult task they already spend
roughly $200 billion a year on travel and that
will only increase, as the generation grows
older. Millennials take pride in travel and think
it more important than other expenses; they
believe that Travel is the only thing that makes
you richer
There is such a gap between the
generations of what they want out of their
travel experiences. Two-thirds of millennials
want a unique experience while traveling
compared to 50% of the older generations.

Who are Millenneals?

Born 1980-2000
(Curently Ages 16-36)

Since they have spent most of their

adult lives in one recession after another
millennials tend to be more frugal with
their money. Since they have this complex
they want to gain value from their travel.
Millennials check an average of 10 sources
before making travel purchaces to make
sure they are paying as little as possible.
Three main ways they do this is by:
1.Earning money on the trip
2.Learning something new
3.Saving money
It is becoming a race between companies
with who can provide the best and
cheapest experience that will attract
millennials. Who ever can become a trend
first wins.

Inspiration comes
from anywhere

For Millennials it normally comes from social media, either

companies like Lonely Plants, Trip Advisor or yelp.
More often than not though inspiration for
travel comes from travel bloggers. They can be on any
social media platform that can showcase their travels,
YouTube, Instagram and Pintrest are the most common
because they are focused on pictures and videos.
The InstaFamous -people who have a large
following on the app Instagram- have made traveling a
lifestyle that others in the millennial generation want to
emulate. The Bucket List Family has over 425 thousand
followers on Instagram and counting. They post pictures
of their tavel around the world with their family. People
frequently comment on their picture #goals because
that is something a lot of millennial aged people want
in their life. They are stressed out starting out in the
cooperate world or at school and they just want to
leave a travel. These bloggers and social media gurus
are a travel inspiration to the generation.

How do they get there?

Flying

The journey is the destination.

Kayak is a global tech company
that is focused on making online travel better.
They search other travel sites and show all the
information the person needs to make the best
(and cheapest) travel decisions. They have
expanded from website to aps and not just on
flights but to hotel and car rentals as well. It is
available in over 40 international sites and 20
languages. Millennials like the simplicity of the site
and the work that it does at the touch of a button.
The second search engine used is
called Skyscanner, it enables people to find and
compare flights, hotels and car rentals. It also finds
the cheapest deal for flights by looking at all of
the airlines at once and giving you the options for
layover to make it cheaper as well. It also features
news items from the travel and flight industry as well
as travel tips for consumers (Wikipedia).
With the use of these flight aggregates
millennials know that they are getting the best price
for their flight.

Driving

Uber and Lyft are becoming more and

more popular these days with millennials. Any time
people go out on the town for a night of drinking
and dancing people no longer have to worry
about how they are getting home. All they have
to do is request and Uber or Lyft driver from their
phone. No calling, you know what the make, model
and lenience plate number of the car is and you
even get to see who is driving you and what their
name is.
With calling a cab you have to speak with
some one and know exactly where you are and
it is much more expensive. With Uber and Lyft you
pay right on the app with no need to give a cash
tip because the drivers are paid well. With a taxi or
cab you have to have cash and give a tip, which
can be a daunting task for someone who is driving
you. Millennials like the easy of an in app purchase
that Uber and Lyft give to them.

Where do they Stay?

There are many different options for
accommodations away from home. Most millennials have
changed their preferences on how they want their living
accommodations to be. There are multiple different
options from room sharing with Airbnb, staying in peoples
living rooms and CouchSurfing to having your own
caravan and saving a parking spot with SpotHero.
Airbnb has been around since 2008 and is an
online marketplace that allows people to list, find and
then rent vacation destinations for a fee. There are over
1,500,000 listings in 34,000 cities and 191 countries.
They wanted to be a market between hotels, hostels
and CouchSurfing.
CouchSurfing website was founded in 2004
and started as a non-profit but changed in 2011 to
a for-profit cooperation. The website provides and
platform for members to surf on couches by staying
as a guest at a hosts home, host travelers, meet other
members, or join an event (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
CouchSurfing).
Since the success of Airbnb many more online
rental websites have become available. HomeAway
and VRBO have the difference of being the entire
house rental rather than just one room. There are also
international versions of Airbnb that are in different cities
that have band Airbnb, 9flats, Windu, travelrent, tvil and
airizu. Airbnb has acquired another clone Acceleo to
expand its international reach.
With all of these options it is not a surprise that
the hotel industry is getting worried. Millennials will check
10 sites before booking just to make sure they are
getting the best deal (Deloitte, 2014).

for future innovation.

job is to build the
foundation.

What do they do there?

There are many reasons that millennials
travel: Millennials do not want to be
a tourist is a new city; they dont want
to disrupt the culture. They want to
immerse themselves in it and interact
with the people who live there. Having
hands-on experiences to truly become
a traveler and temporary citizen of
where they are visiting.
Because of this shift in what is wanted
hotel chains have paired with
millennials so they can learn while
traveling. Groups such as College
Break, EF tours and Study Abroad trips
have helped people be able to learn
while seeing all the sites.
These groups help millennials learn all
about a place while being able to
be with people their age who want to
learn and care about the same things.
It is a great marketing tatic to get
millennials to a new place.

Millennials also tend to have the

preference towards making the
world a better place, even while on
vacation. Programs such as Reading
Road Trips and Give Back Getaway
are programs with two and four

70% of Millennials stated

they expect their travel
destinations to offer
immersive, interactive, and
hands-on experiences
hour opportunities to package and
distribute food to families in need.
This small time can be a huge impact
on the community and can be built
into larger vacations thereby giving
millennials the opportunity to help
others while on vacation.

As mentioned before Millennials

love to save money, but really which
generation likes to pay more when
they could have gotten it cheaper.
Millennials just make it more widely
know how much they want a deal. That
is why they use the Internet to find the
best deal. Groupon is one of those
places. You can find a cheap hotel,
dance lessons, ATV tours, cooking
classes and theatre tickets all for
a discounted price. This app lets
millennials get out and enjoy the local
community while not breaking the bank.
To save money Millennials will travel
in larger groups for dicounts, stay
farther away from the attractions and
wait longer in line or till the day of the
even just to find the cheapest event.
If companies want to understand
millennials it is to not over charge
because they will find the best price.

Why Millennials are the best travlers

1. They are looking to learn from their trips
2. They like to walk long distances
3. They travel to pursue their own interests more that other generations do.
4. They travel for the purpose of bonding with friends more commonly than
older travelers
5. They are spontaneous
6. They are typically more willing to stay in hostels, motels and campsites,
which makes travel insanely cheap.
7. They think travel is a more important part of the American dream than
secure retirement.
8. They dont NEED fancy meals to be happy, but they are willing to
splurge.
9. They want the best bang for their buck and will search for the best
price
10. They WANT to travel more than older generations do
