School Environment Narrative

Simpson Middle School is located in Central West Phoenix. For physical education
classes students use the outside field, outside basketball courts, or the multipurpose room
indoors. These are all considered the classroom for physical education class here at Simpson
Middle School. Simpson offers students the opportunity to be engaged via different programs.

Running Head: INNOVATION GRANT PROPOSAL

Some of these programs are sports, music, band, art, chess club, and many more that are offered
after school. The school aims to provide an academic setting that will improve achievement and
meet the individual needs of each student. Provide opportunities for the development of social
skills. Establish effective and open communication between staff, administration, students, and
community. And provide a safe, non-threatening, positive, caring environment.
The Alhambra Elementary School District is located in central Phoenix and encompasses
13 square miles within the cities of Phoenix and Glendale. Alhambra has 15 primary, middle, or
elementary schools including a traditional school and a preschool center, and serves nearly
14,200 students in preschool through eighth grades. Ninety-three percent of students receive free
or reduced-price food services, and nearly 26 percent of students are English language learners.
Within Simpson students have a library that they can use with computers. Outside of the
classroom there isnt much technology offered. As far as in the physical education program,
teachers get an Apple Macbook Pro so they can do lesson plans for the students and a projector
to show videos when needed. The school offers a counselor for students to speak to if they need
some one there as well as a school resource officer on campus at all times.
Resources that can be added and will be very beneficial to the school are things such as
collaborating with organizations to get free or reduced clothes for students, having programs that
talk about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, laptops or tablets for every student or classrooms,
assistance to public health so students can get a physical for free or reduced for sports, a program
about growing your own garden, a gymnasium so students can be physically active no matter
what the weather is outside, programs that speak about colleges to get students thinking about it
already, and many more.
These resources will cost money but it will benefit students in more ways than just
learning to pass a test. We need our students to learn content that goes beyond school. Content

Running Head: INNOVATION GRANT PROPOSAL

that can help them improve as an individual and become contagious in classrooms, schools,
districts, and community.
Introduction Description
My name is Heberto Chavez and I have been teaching Physical Education for two years
now. I have taught in inner city schools and I really enjoyed doing that. I feel like the students
appreciate every little new thing that gets introduce at school. I believe that students need to
learn how to be physically active, learn proper nutrition, and learn skills they can use for their
entire lifetime to have a healthy lifestyle. In the past, I have used a computer and projector to
show videos to my students about a lesson such as how to properly shoot a basketball.
What I am proposing is for my school to obtain iPads for the Physical Education
department. These iPads would be filled with many apps that would be beneficial to the students
as well as their families. Some of the apps that will be on the iPads are Balance It, Easy Task
Tracker, AFL Pro, Stretch It, 12 Minute Fitness Test, PE APPS, Sport Rules, Easy Eater 2,
Healthy Heroes 2, Veggie Circus Farm, and many more. The type of information the students
will learn while using these apps can be transferred to their homes and eventually transferred to
the community. Tablets and apps have become very popular in recent years. If we can have open
houses, demonstration nights, and Physical Activity Nights to get the information out to parents
it will work great. The goal is to get the iPads and apps and have the students learn everything
they possibly can about exercises to do at home, grocery lists they can use to cook healthier
meals, and then the goal is for the demonstration nights is the students become the experts and
they inform the parents. This is much needed in this school, district, and community because
they lack the simple knowledge that cheaper doesnt mean better. That because they can buy a
dozen apples for two dollars doesnt mean the apples are better than the organic one that cost six

Running Head: INNOVATION GRANT PROPOSAL

for three dollars. The community needs to get informed on how much their physical activity and
nutrition matters no mater how young they are.
This project will create a healthy school environment that hopefully will transfer to the
whole district and eventually the community. This project will take sometime to accomplish
because it will take time to get all the parents involved and buy into the program. The teachers
around the school will also benefit from this project by learning new ideas they can use at their
home as well.
The goal is to have every student impacted in the school. The students that will be
impacted first are the students that are required to take physical education classes. Eventually it
will reach every student on the campus once they take physical education class. If the students
stay at the school for all their middle school experience than it will reach every student on
campus because they have to take one physical education while in the school.
Students can come up with their own workouts, their own nutrition meals, and read on
what new information is out there. If students are assigned into groups they can be given time,
equipment, and the iPad to create a workout or game they can play as a class. This requires
teamwork and the students have to be creative to come up with a game they dont know anything
about.
Project Narrative
Students will use iPads to learn about fitness, nutrition, and building a successful workout
routine. The students will need to discover healthier alternatives for foods and workouts they can
perform and demonstrate. Students need to learn about proper nutrition needed for a healthy
lifestyle as well as ideas of ways to remain active. The school is located in the heart of Phoenix
where students do not get support they need a times. For physical education classes students use
the outside field, outside basketball courts, or the multipurpose room indoors. The school offers
students the opportunity to be engaged via different programs. Some of these programs are
sports, music, band, art, chess club, and many more that are offered after school. The school aims

Running Head: INNOVATION GRANT PROPOSAL

to provide an academic setting that will improve achievement and meet the individual needs of
each student. Provide opportunities for the development of social skills. Establish effective and
open communication between staff, administration, students, and community. And provide a
safe, non-threatening, positive, caring environment. Although the school offers all of this,
students still need to work on fighting the obesity epidemic. While using the iPads and adding
nutritional and physical activity apps can the students begin a change in the obesity epidemic?
The community really needs to work together to try to reach a goal of fighting this epidemic.
Students will work in groups where they will write logs of food they eat, workouts they do,
future workouts they can do, calorie intake of the students, and healthy recipes.
This project will impact the current students by having them do the project hands on.
They will gain the knowledge and experience that will be needed to make this a successful
project. The project will change how I teach my classes because it will involve students sitting
down more and writing more than usual. But the goal is to get the students to think about ways
they can fight the obesity epidemic that is happening in the world right now especially in
minority households. Students will gain the knowledge needed and plan their own individual
workouts and food diaries. Once they have this done, they will create flyers, workout sheets,
posters, and anything else they come up with as a team to present to students in the school. This
will help reach more students and staff. And if students have siblings that already went through
the school they can still gain the knowledge thanks to their younger sibling.
Students will be put into groups and they will be given the question How can physical
activity and nutritional apps help cure the obesity epidemic? Students will be using the Internet
to look up important statistics about obesity. The students will need to find statistics that hit
home such as looking up obesity statistics in minorities and obesity statistics in low
socioeconomic neighborhoods. After students find these statistics, they will feel more connected

Running Head: INNOVATION GRANT PROPOSAL

to the project because they will know someone that suffers from this or is close to suffering from
this such as family, friends, teachers, or role models. Ninety-three percent of the students in this
district receive free or reduced-price lunch. This plays a big role on how students have a hard
time obtaining food that is healthy in a sense. The ultimate goals for this project is for students to
come up with their own workout routines, keep a journal with the amount of calorie intake,
present facts they found of obesity epidemic, and a log of their physical activity. I want them to
have knowledge of what causes obesity, why we should fight it, and how can they help fight it at
home. Outcomes I want my students to reach are coming up with S.M.A.R.T. goals for them and
their families, obtain information of how the obesity epidemic is affecting their community, log
their calorie intake, write a journal with workouts they can perform outside of the class setting
with their families and friends, and come up with cheap fast healthy recipes they can do at home.
I will make sure students reach these goals by asking them questions to see where the groups are
and as well as have them present at certain times. What I want my students to master is to be able
to take the entire information they have learned home and try to change their household and their
environment. If they can learn how to present the information to their families hopefully the
guardians can adopt it in their lifestyles.
Questions will be asked to students to connect to their goals and objectives of the project.
These questions will be questions that will lead the students to where I want them to be at for the
end of the project.

Standard 2 The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles,
strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
Standard 3 The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve
and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
Standard 4 The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior
that respects self and others.
Standard 5 The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health,
enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.
Technology Standards
1. Creativity and innovation
2. Communication and collaboration
3. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
Students will be working in groups and discussing the questions and facts. Students will
practice public speaking by presenting the information they found out. They will use the iPads,
apps, and the Internet to research information and come up with the necessary data they will
need. Students will have a journal at the end of the project. In the journal they will have written
their calorie intake, workout plans, and healthy recipes. Students will be checked on using
checklists, reviewing the journals, and evaluations as a group on individual work.
Budget Narrative
In the chart provided I have noted everything I will be buying for my project. Students
will use the iPads in their groups to come up with a solution to the problem presented to them.
Each iPad will have an Apple silicon case to protect the iPad incase the iPad is dropped or water
falls on it. The iPads are going to be filled up with applications that students will use. The

Running Head: INNOVATION GRANT PROPOSAL

applications are going to be used to come up with exercises or workout routines for themselves.
There are numerous of applications offered in the students iPads so they will have a variation of
choices of which to use to come up with their workout routines. The applications are filled with
information they will need such as how to perform an exercise, how many sets and reps are
needed, and as well has how to progress from an easy workout, to intermediate, and finally to
expert.
With the nutritional applications the students will be allowed to find out their calorie
intake. They will be able to search foods they ate and see how much calories each food had. With
the nutritional applications students will also be able to find healthy snacks. They will find
healthy recipes on the applications. The Healthy Food Alternative application will be used to
come up with an alternative snacks to their original snacks. So an example can be subbing
carrots with peanut cutter instead of Ritz-Bits crackers.
The poster boards, markers, and paint will be used for the students to present their finding
to other students, staff, family, and the community. Once they have found results on the problem
that I will be giving them, they will construct a poster board that will be used to put all their
results on.
The composition book and the pencils will be used for the journals that I will collect to
grade at the end of the project. Students will write all their workouts, their healthy alternative
choices, their healthy recipes, and the research they have found about the obesity epidemic and
how it pertains to themselves and their family. This composition notebook will be filled up at the
end of the project. It will be a complete guide for the students to fight the obesity epidemic by
eating healthier and having a reference of what workout routines to preform and how often.
All in all, this will all be needed to complete my project. Students will gain the
knowledge needed to know what steps can be taken to prevent obesity. These steps consist of

workouts they can perform at home with family or the community, healthy alternative food
choices they can eat, and as well as recipes they can follow forever.

Journals will be collected from each student. In the journals students should have written their daily intake
of food. Followed by the total of calories each meal had. And then finally an alternative food they can eat
instead listed. And a written part of why this is important and why they shouldnt just eat whatever they feel
like.
If the students have a succesful written out journal, then I will know they understood the topic and they were
able to relate to the topic.
