Inquiry Based Lesson Plan

Subject: History/10th grade

Standard:

SSHS-S2C3-04: Describe the interaction of European and Asian civilizations from the 12th to the 16th
centuries:
a.

Crusades

Objective (Explicit):

Students will evaluate relations between Europe and Asia during the Crusades by comparing the
Crusades with the current conflict in the Middle East.

Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):


Students will be able to identify:

All the different groups involved in the Crusades.


Each groups involvement in the Crusades.
The causes of the Crusades.
The positive and negative outcomes of the Crusades.
The overall impact of the Crusades.

Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):

SSHS-S2C1-06: Apply the skills of historical analysis to current social, political, geographic, and
economic issues facing the world.
SSHS-S2C3-01: Contrast the fall of Rome with the development of the Byzantine and Arab Empires
(e.g., religion, culture, language, governmental structure).

Engage (Make content and learning relevant to real life and connect to student interest)
Ask students what they know about know the current issues in the Middle East. Will also ask if they know
anyone who is currently serving or has served over seas. Have students write their ideas down and
brainstorm then will discuss as a class.

Teacher Will:

Explore

Put students into four different groups:


Franks, Byzantines, Palestine Jews and
Arab Muslims.
Walk around the class and talk to each
group to make sure they are on the right
track.

Student Will:

Each group will discuss their reasons for


entering the crusades.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation
There will be different roles for each member in the group. By having a specific role in the group,
students stay on task and can shine by doing something they have some comfort in doing.

After discussing in small groups, the

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation
Students will fill out a graphic organizer while each group states their reasoning for entering the
Crusades. This will help students memorize vocabulary words by having to use them in the graphic
organizer. It also helps students organize the material and make it easier to reference back to and
memorize.
Teacher Will:

Teacher will walk around and answer


any questions the students may have.

Student Will:

Elaborate

Groups will discuss whether they feel


the Crusades had a positive or negative
effect on society.
Will then discuss as a class. There will
be a representative from each group that
will share with the class the highlights
from each group discussion.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation

Students will have to work together and collorate on their indivudal views of how the crusades
affected society and whether they feel it was a positive or negative impact.
Evaluate

Students will be evaluated by their participation in group and class discussion. The teacher will be able to
see where the students are in regards to understanding the material and if they are ready to apply what they
currently know to current issues in the Middle East.
