Revival is Gods sovereign work. We cannot produce it through

we need to release the results of our obedience into the hands of God and

God knows our hearts and the motives behind the things we do. This is
especially important as we pray and seek Gods restored favor through revival.
In todays text, Joel gets to the heart of the matter as to why His people should
seek restoration.
The use of the phrase leave a blessing behind Him gives the idea that God
would just pass through and drop off gifts and blessings upon His people. But
that coupled with the remaining phrases a grain offering and drink offering
for the Lord your God shows why renewed favor should be sought by His

It was not simply about God restoring their agricultural and physical needs

they knew before the locust plague and warning of the approaching northern
army. Rather, God was looking for hearts that were seeking deliverance
and restoration so that they could encounter, honor and worship Him

restoration and favor is not so much about Him blessing His people as it is
about His people, through His renewed presence with them, becoming a

Origins matter. They tell a lot about who people are and how they respond to
certain situations. An identity crisis often takes place when people struggle with
their origins related to who they are or where they are from.
The people of God in Joels day struggled with their identity, which created
many problems. They lost sight of their Hebrew heritage and began to blend with
surrounding cultures and religious traditions. Eventually, they turned away from
their covenant relationship with God, which resulted in devastation and judgment

The events recorded in Joel 2:12-14 reminded Gods people that they must

When God promises complete restoration and revival, He always does so in ways
that go above and beyond what He is already doing among His people. James
Burns, author of the classic work Revivals: Their Laws and Leaders, calls this principle
of revival the law of progress. According to Burns, God uses times of revival and
restoration to thrust His redemptive work and plan forward through the ages. This
is especially seen in todays text with Gods promise of the outpouring of His Spirit
on His people. The phrase come to pass represents a shift in the text. This promise
With this promise of the Spirit, the Lord gives His people a peek into His
redemptive purposes that are fulfilled as His people return to Him in restoration
and relationship. Hence, He promises to pour out His Spirit upon all flesh through
global revival.
His people one day, like during the Messianic Age as seen in Acts 2:17 and during
the latter days. Because of this restoration, future seasons of Kingdom progress and
that time, God renewed Murrays prayer life. Following that season of revival,
Murray wrote one of his most noted books, With Christ in the School of Prayer.
In 1903, a man named Joseph Jenkins was greatly influenced by Murrays book
and started a meeting to help youth pray and stand against worldly influences. In
1904, during one of those meetings, a young Welsh girl stood to answer a question
about what Jesus meant to her. God used her sincere answer to move in that
service, stir others to respond and impact other youth meetings in the area.
Testimonies from these meetings were later shared at the 1904 Keswick
