1st Grade Homework

Mrs. Wickerts Class
Dear First Grade Parents,
I would like to outline somethings for homework for all of you. I am changing what we are doing
and I wanted to be sure that I clarified it with all of you. Each Wednesday your child is sent
home with a large red and white folder that is their Wednesday Folder. In that folder you will
find any notes or homeworks sent home for the week. All homework is due back the following
Monday. Please help your child to get their homework done before it is due and get it into their
backpacks.
I am sending home things that I feel need to be worked on or practiced as a class every week. It
is especially important that these things get completed. I f for some reason your child is not able
to complete their homework, please write me a note and send it in with the incomplete
homework or email me at kwickert@roseburg.k12.or.us. It is important that your child
demonstrates responsibility by completing their homework and turning it in on time.
The Homework Plan
Reading:
In this packet is a reading log. You will get a new one every week.
Heres what to do:
Each night please help your child read or read to your child (see the Reading Chart and details
attached). Once your child has participated in reading for at least 2
0 minutes every night,
please have write down the title, author, number of pages and total time they read. Then check
whether they read or were read to. Please do this every day. I have included a booklist, but you
can also help them choose a book using the 5-Finger Rule. They can certainly continue reading
in the same book, no need to start a new one each night.
Writing:
I have included some questions that I would like your child to answer in complete sentences
about the story they have read. I have included 5 copies of them, but they only need to
complete 1. They may however complete up to 5 (one per night). Please turn in all completed
answers.
Handwriting:
Having good handwriting takes practice. I have included a capital and lowercase handwriting
worksheet. Please guide your child to take their time and do their best work. Practice makes
habit.

Math:
I have included a blank 0-50 (it will soon be 120) chart. Please have your child complete this up
to at least 50, they may go higher. Help guide them for accuracy in numeral writing as well as
numbers they choose. We are working on this in class and I think more practice is always better.
One last note-Please know that I realize some children are in sports or extracurriculars. I send home
homework on Wednesday and it is due back the following Monday so the children have ample
time to complete their homework. They are all in the process of learning to be responsible and
follow instructions, please guide them to do their best and make an effort toward their homework
and its deadline.
Thank you.
