ECE PROJECT STUDY TOPIC PROPOSAL FORM

I. Proposed Title

Automated Complete Blood Count Using Image Processing

II. Problem Statement

The complete blood count (CBC) is a medical procedure that gives

substantial information about the patients blood. An abnormally high or low count
of the bloods composition (RBC, WBC, platelets), may indicate a disease or an
infection.
RBCs are responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the
tissues of the body. They also pick up carbon dioxide from the body and carry it
to the lungs for release.
On the other hand, WBCs help defend the body against infectious
diseases. There are normally between 4 x 109 to 11 x 109 WBCs per liter of
blood. There are five major types of white blood cells, namely: neutrophils,
eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes.

The amount of red blood cells in the body can serve as a very good
indicator for certain diseases, or a dysfunction in the bone marrow. A significantly
low RBC count is a very good indicator of anemia. Anemia is a condition that is
commonly related to fatigue and lack of energy, resulting from the lack of oxygen
circulation in the body. The presence of high RBC count, on the other hand, is
known as polycythemia. Very high RBC mass will slow blood velocity and
increase the risk of intravascular clotting. This can also lead to chronic lung
disease in adults and children with congenital heart defects. On the other hand,
an abnormal amount of white blood cells indicate infections. An excessive
amount of white blood cells is an indicator of leukemia.
There are mainly two ways by which a CBC may be accomplished. They
are through the electronic automated blood count, and the manual blood count.
The electronic blood count equipment is very expensive. The price usually
ranges between $2,000 to as much as $15,000. Most hospitals and laboratories
in the Philippines still rely on the manual blood count. However, manual blood
count is prone to human error. The challenge is to create an inexpensive
alternative to electronic blood count while minimizing human error. This can be
accomplished by using digital image processing in medical visualization to
automate the analysis.

III. Proposed Solution

This topic focuses on the implementation of a computer-controlled

Erythrocytes and Leukocytes detection and counting system by application of
image processing techniques to automate manual blood count.

(You must include the devices and/or software to be used for clarity of your
proposed solution.)

Figure 2. Block diagram of portable blood typing device

This device was used to determine the blood type of a certain blood
sample without having to rely on a microscope. It utilizes an automated
process in placing the necessary antibodies to the blood sample, which is
used in determining the type of certain blood by the presence and
absence of certain characteristics in the blood sample. Also it shows the
obtained results with the use of an LCD output screen. The project
basically is an automated machine that is microcontroller based and
makes use of a portable power supply in this case an alkaline battery. The

software part of the program was made in the C language, which is the
same programming language the group will use in implementing image
processing techniques. It shows an efficiency of 90 percent, the cost and
size greatly reduce with respect to existing blood typing devices.
