COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course covers a global perspective, with focus on the US and Europe, of the optimum
organization and employment of human resources to accomplish strategic organizational objective.
Additionally, this course is concerned with the policies and procedures which affect the recruitment,
development and deployment of the human resources of firms. The course will address the
significant changes which have taken place in this area of management in response to economic and
political pressure and will consider policies and practices in various countries.

Specifics of Course Assignments


Case Analysis

Based on the case analysis you will be solving during the term on blackboard, you will present the
final proposal at the end of the term in a form of a report.

TEAM CASE ANALYSIS PROJECT


A team case analysis project is designed to help you sharpen your analytical skills. The most
effective way to analyze a case is to apply a variation of the scientific method. This method of
analysis is simply a logical approach that includes the seven steps outlined below. Based on the
course topics you will analyze, solve and propose a solution to a specific human resources issue

from an existing company. The core issue should be a result of steps 1 and 2 of the analysis.
Step 1:

Analysis and description of the situation

In this part you will present the companys structure, business area, culture and issues you will be
solving in next steps based on the available information.
Step 2:

Analysis of the main IHRM priorities for the management of the

company.
In this step you need to review the information you have about the potential problems of the
company. Do not be afraid to assume, but clearly state the assumptions you are making. You
should make assumptions on the basis of your knowledge of typical managerial practices, and they
should be consistent with the facts about the case, even though your facts may be somewhat
limited. Managerial decisions are often based on limited information. In fact, practicing managers
find that many of their decisions have to be made quickly on the basis of limited information
Step 3:

Recruitment proposal

Based on the instructions provided by the instructor, you will make a proposal for the recruitment
process. This proposal needs to be realistic and follow the recent trends in recruitment.
Step 4:

Compensation package proposal

In this step you will design the complete compensation package for managers send to foreign
country. Your proposal needs to be based on a thorough market analysis of the target country as
well as on the company standards.

Step 5:

Training program proposal

You will create a detailed training proposal for the PCN expat before and during the assignment.
Zou need to describe the areas, content, training method, duration as well as the training
effectiveness evaluation methods.
Step 6:

Performance management system proposal

In this step, you are required to design a performance management system for the managerial
position. You need to decide about the KPI and methods of measurement. The proposal needs to
take into account the frequency and methods of performance feedback. Suggest a timetable and
methods for the evaluation process. Justify your decisions with expert opinions and/or with
professional experience evidence.

Human Resource Project Paper

For the Human Resources Project, students can choose from two different options:
(All companies selected must operate within Europe. They may be MNCs)
Option # 1:
Using one organization with which you are familiar, describe how human resources currently
functions as a strategic business partner in two major areas of business, e.g., employee selection,
compensation, performance management, HRIS systems, labor relations, training etc. Once you
have described the current situation, make recommendations on how human resources could
function more effectively as a strategic business partner. In proposing recommendations, you must
conduct thorough research to justify the proposed changes.

Option #2:
Select three areas of human resource management in a particular company. Focus on EU and state
employment law. How has the strategy of the company developed to accommodate employment
legislation, ethics and diversity? What recommendations would you offer to improve the current
situation? In proposing recommendations, students must conduct thorough research to justify the
proposed changes.

These options are very similar except: #1 deals more with SHRM. #2 deals more with the
specific issues of ethics/diversity and employment legislation.
Along with preparing a written paper you will present your analysis of a case to the rest of the
class in presentation format. The Project paper and presentation both should be turned in to the
instructor grading and feedback.
Presentation 18-20 minutes, no more than 20 slides, not including Cover page, references,
appendix, etc. Power point does not need to be uploaded, but should be given to instructor day of
presentation. Paper: 10-15 pages, not including cover page, reference page, etc. APA guidelines.

Late Assignments:
No late work will be given credit for the course. Students must manage time appropriately so that
all work is uploaded on or before the given deadline. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Academic Integrity/ Scholastic Honesty:


Scholastic Honesty
Students are responsible for understanding City University of Seattles policy on Scholastic
Honesty and are required to adhere to its standards in meeting all course requirements. Violations
of the policy include, among other practices:
1. Cheating;
2. Plagiarizing;
3. Submitting substantially the same work for two different courses without prior permission
from the instructors;
4. Collaborating on assignments without prior permission of the instructor;
