AUCKLAND CITY GUIDE

2016

AUCKLAND
Cosmopolitan Auckland, the largest Polynesian
city in the world, is the home to a wide range of
shops and restaurants, as well as busy harbours
and beautiful beaches. Known as the City of Sails,
this handsome high-rise harbor is known for its
boats, beaches, boutiques and brands. Auckland
capitalises on its seafaring roots - the America's
Cup yacht race has been hosted here, and
Auckland has the highest proportion of boats-percapita. The Auckland region is home to 35% of
New Zealand's entire population. Maori heritage is
strong here, and the area is a living example of the
country's ethnic diversity - the heady mix of
Pacific, Asian and European cultures is reflected in
the endless variety of shops, restaurants,
museums, and festivals, ensuring you'll never be
short of something to do.

there is a substantial area of native bush, filled with unique native flora.
A wonderful place to explore, full natural beauty and life.

WYNYARD QUARTER
In a previous life the Wynyard Quarter (or the docks, as it was then
known) was a downtrodden industrial wasteland but now the area flows
naturally on from popular Viaduct Harbour with its swanky apartments,
hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars overlooking luxury yachts bobbing
gently alongside floating berths. Much of the original infrastructure like
grain silos, warehouses and wharves topped with rail lines remains,
albeit with a 21st century spruce up. Harsh industry has been softened
with childrens playgrounds, parks with water features and striking
public artworks along with a caf strip with outdoor dining beneath
colourful umbrellas waterside. Friday night Silo Cinema beneath the
stars and on the grass is the place to be during summer with a blanket
and picnic hamper as cult movies and old favourites are projected onto

PONSONBY ROAD

festooned with designer labels. Carefully restored wooden shops sell
clothing fresh from the catwalks. Suprettes impeccable edit of
fashion and lifestyle offerings encompasses brands such as camilla
and marc, sass & bide, Stolen Girlfriends Club and Deadly Ponies.
Watch for Juliette Hogans ladylike garments and Carlsons exquisite,
made-in-New-Zealand couture gowns. Andrea Moores hypercolourful designs are just off the strip on Mackelvie Street. Excellent
cafes include Clear Water Peak, Dizengoff and Craft Kitchen.

HIGH STREET
Running parallel to Queen Street, central Aucklands main
thoroughfare, High Street is one stylish destination. The narrow
street reveals boutiques where personal attention to quality and
character are key. Sustainability is woven into Untouched Worlds
ethos, and their high-performance, luxurious knitwear of merino
wool, impossibly soft possum fur, and organic cotton and bamboo.
Crane Brothers carefully crafted menswear is a must for dapper
gentlemen, and labels such as Comme des Garcons, Isabel Marant
and Kenzo adorn the racks at Fabric.
