DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or


Principle):
Students will count 1-20 by using stickers they will apply numbers indicated on worksheet representing the
number. (Concept)
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective): Students will recognize a relationship between numbers and
objects.
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence): Students will be able
to count forward beginning with number one, which will lead them to notice the relationship between
numbers and quantities.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activities): How many gumballs did the hippo eat?
Using two Hippo cutouts placed on two different baskets; students will line up in
pairs and shoot red or blue balls inside the Hippo mouth, using a timer each student
will get 10 seconds to aim as many balls as possible. After 10 seconds the whole
class will count out loud how many balls went inside each Hippos mouth; two
volunteers from a pair will write on white board how many balls went into each
Hippos mouth.
How many balls were fed to the Hippos? Can someone show me the number of balls
each Hippo ate? Teacher will point to the number line using the answer and will ask
the following questions. What number comes before ? What number comes after ?
Can someone draw these numbers? (Students will orally respond to questions).
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student Activities):

a. As a whole group we will sing the Number Rock Song. A volunteer will stand below the

number line next to the white board, and will point to the number as the song is sung.
b. Teacher will walk around and listen to students knowledge of numbers.
Step #2 Review Vocabulary
a. What is a number? What is a Hippo? What is a digit? Where did we start counting from?
Students will work in pairs to discuss the questions above after a minute teacher will bring
back students attention and have a group discussion.
b. Teacher listens to students responses.
Step #3 Number Demonstration
a. Students will demonstrate how the number of gumballs requested by the teacher using a
number flip card. In each table students will have 20 different gumballs and will work
together as a group to count the correct number of gumballs requested by teacher.
b. Teacher will walk around as students are working together to count the number of gumballs.
Step #4 Putting it all together (worksheet)
a. Students will work independently on a worksheet where they will place different colored
circular stickers representing gumballs.
b. Teacher will work independently with struggling students in a small group setting.
B. APPLICATION ACTIVITY (Practice and/or Reflection): Students will fill in the numbers
written on the board by teacher, in their journals.
