Directions:
1.We are going to play a game of writing musical chairs!
2.Each chair will have a paper with a small amount of writing on it.
3.All students will walk in a circle around the chairs until the music stops.
4.When the music stops, read the storys quote and study the picture provided, along
with your previous peers writing contribution.
5. You will write as much as you can to continue the story on your piece of paper.
6.After 1 minute, each student will put down the paper and leave it on the chair for the
next person to add a sentence.
7.We will start and stop the music ten times.
Things to consider when writing:
Be creative with your sentence! Each sentence can impact the topic of the story.
Think about your audience
Try to relate your new sentence with the previous sentence.
You may write dialogue (speaking sentences) or descriptive sentences.
Please remember to be appropriate!
-Students in groups of 10 (2 groups total) will set up their 10 chairs in a circle with plenty
of room to walk Teacher will place a clipboard with a story template within each (10
each) on every chair. These clipboards are already prepared for a quick start to activity.
(3 minutes)
-Students will participate in musical chairs activity by writing a creative short story.

The story must be using appropriate audience and tone of voice depending on the
storys quote, picture, and the previous student writers contributions.
-Teacher will ask students to stand on the outside of the circle with their writing utensil
and begin walking (ONLY walking) when the music begins.
-Teacher will play a school appropriate song for about 15 seconds before stopping.
-When music stops, remind students that whatever chair they are closest to is the chair
they are to start reading and then writing at their station using the clipboard.
-Start the timer immediately on the board for 1 minute, to signify to students how much
time they must read and write. Express to students that grammar and spelling are not as
important as actual story content at this point but to try their best.
-When timer ends, play music again and remind students to stop writing and start
walking in the circle again.
-Repeat the steps above 9 more times (12 minutes)
-Have students keep the story they were last working on from their 10th writing round.
-Students must return the chairs and desks back to the regular classroom space, along

Students will be required to determine prior knowledge of audience, point of view, first
person and third person with a partner. Students will be collaborating with partners and
recording their partners answers on a Do Now worksheet. Students will then share their
partners answer to show a strong classroom culture and incorporate stronger listening
skills. This will also help students feel more comfortable in answering publicly to the
class because they will be sharing a partners answers vs their own answers.
Closing/Check for Understanding:
Students will reflect on their experience from the musical chair activity. They will also be
required to incorporate their prior knowledge of audience, point of view, first person and
third person definitions and how they used these within their creative-short stories.
Students will also share their responses with the class and provide feedback for teacher.
Formative/Summative Assessments Used:
-Do Now
-Exit Ticket
-Creative Story Writing from 10 different writing prompts
Homework:
No homework
Differentiation: (Do not complete until after feedback)
Reflection on Planning:
Planning for this lesson was not very complicated. It took a lot of time to write out all of
the directions, but with the more planning that I provide for myself the more confident I
will feel completing this lesson in the classroom. Planning also was simple because it did
not require many resources that some schools/students would not have. The most
difficult aspect of planning this lesson was developing all of the story prompts and
finding pictures online for the short stories.
Reflection on Instruction: (Do not complete until after feedback)
