Philosophy of Teaching and Learning
In my experience, education has always centered
around three major purposes. First, schools must
support student development as a whole. What this
demands is that students receive instruction in all
major subject areas beyond literacy and math skills.
Subjects such as social studies, physical education, and
the arts play an immensely important role in
educational development. Because of time limitations
in the school day, use of lessons with integrated
subjects that support multiple intelligences are
necessary to fully realize an efficient and supportive
classroom model.
The second significant purpose of education is to
provide students with the tools to promote valuable
learning opportunities. I feel that all students have the
drive to learn and understand the world around them,
yet without tools, students cannot construct a useful,
working understanding. It becomes the teachers role
to provide students with the resources to promote
authentic student learning. These tools can take many
forms, including the environment in both construct and
activity maintenance, manipulatives to provide practice
and make abstract concepts concrete, support to keep
student energy and interest, and assessment to gauge
what positive or negative effect current strategies have.
Finally, I feel that the purpose of education helps
students understand themselves as part of the larger
world. Many students enter school without the benefit
of many real-world experiences outside their home.
School provides a stark contrast with this as students
become part of a community. Our community expands
from that of a classroom to that of a school, to a
geographical community, to a state, to a country, to a
world and beyond. Students must understand that the
decisions and actions they take influence everything
around them, just as the actions and decisions of others
influence themselves. It is in this way, students can
build off of their own interests and strengths to find the
place in the world that they seek. The teachers role
becomes supportive to help that child reach where
they wish to be.

Students create a PhotoStory slideshow,
displaying a single food chain within an
ecosystem.
Creating a Food Chain with Glogster
Students create a Glogster poster, displaying a
single food chain within an ecosystem, noting
the appropriate terms for each food chain
member.
Defining Food Chain Terms with Open Office
Students develop a definition list or flier using
Open Office Writer. Full credit requires a
format that exhibits clear understanding of
what the terms mean.
Showing the Energy Pyramid with Excel
Students create a chart depicting the energy
transfer ratio in a single food chain using an
Excel spreadsheet.
Responding to Questions with Blogs
Students respond to a brief essay question on
how pesticides would influence a food chain.
The responses will be posted in the form of a
blog response.
Animal Research Poster with Mashtabs
Students create a Mashtab Research Poster
containing pictures, webpages, and a video
related to an animal. Pictures should include
one thing the animal eats, and if possible, an
animal that eats it.
