The conjunction is the part of speech used as a joiner for words, phrases, or clauses
in a particular sentence. It links these words or group of words together, in such a way that
certain relationships among these different parts of the sentence will be established, and the
thoughts that all of these convey will be connected. Conjunction is one of the items in
grammar, a body rules specifying how meaning are created in English. Conjunction is a word
that links words, phrases, and clauses. It can be said that conjunctions were linking or
joining words which joined together various things. If a conjunction joined words, then
any word that occur between others be a conjunctions.
In teaching writing skill and language components such as grammar, vocabulary, and
spelling in the classroom, the teacher should teach them integrated. It means that the teacher
should not neglect the teaching of language component, for example structure. This is
because structure can support the writing skill. If students have enough knowledge about
language component, specifically structure, their writing skill can be improved, and
conjunction is one item of structure that has important function to combine/relate other
words, phrases, and clause in the sentence
In learning English, conjunction is one important aspect in writing when we want to
combine word and sentence and easy way to achieve unity and coherence in writing. Words,
phrases, clauses that are joined by and, but, so and or are written in parallel from (Oshima,
1990:135). Using conjunction incorrectly can make their English difficult to understand.
However, the use of conjunction in English is not easy for students in Indonesian.
Based on the issue above, this research is conducted in order to get information about
the students problems in using conjunction entitled The problems in using conjunction to
combine sentences at the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Pengaron school year 2015/2016.
