EDUCATION SYSTEM IN INDONESIA

The National Education System of Indonesia is generally aimed at elevating the intellectual life of the
nation and developing the Indonesian people fully, i.e. as people who are devoted to God, have
knowledge and skills, are in good physical and spiritual health, are independent and fair, and feel
responsible for their countrymen and nation.
Types of Education
The system consists of seven types of education, they are: (1) General education prioritizes expansion
of general knowledge and improvement of skills for the student. Specialization is also needed in the
last grade; (2) Vocational education prepares students in mastering a number of specific vocational
skill needed for employment; (3) Special education provides important skills and abilities for students
with physical and/or mental disabilities; (4) Service-related education aims at increasing abilities
required for a government official or a candidate to implement a certain task; (5) Religious education
prepares students to play a role which demand the mastery of specific knowledge about religion and
related subject; (6) Academic-oriented education focuses primarily on improving the mastery of
science; and (7) Professional education prepares students primarily on mastering specialized or jobrelated knowledge and skills.
Level of Education
The level of education that includes formal school system consists of the following level of education,
i.e. basic education, secondary education, and higher education. Apart from the levels of education
mentioned above, pre-school education is also provided. Out-of-school education can be held at the
outside schools and provided by governmental and no-governmental agencies of private sector and the
community.
Basic Education is a general education of nine years, i.e. six years of primary and three years of junior
secondary school. Junior secondary school and professional junior secondary school. The goal of basic
education is to develop students as individuals, members of society, citizens and members of mankind,
as well as to prepare them to pursue study in secondary education. Basic Education is a compulsory
education that providing the learners with basic knowledge and skills.
Secondary education is available to graduates of primary school. The paths of secondary education
include general secondary school, vocational secondary school, religious secondary school, service
related secondary school, and special secondary school. Secondary education gives priority to
expanding knowledge and developing students skills and preparing them to continue their studies to
the higher level of education or the preparation of students to enter the world of work and expanding

their professional attitude. The length of secondary education is three years for general secondary
education and three or four years for vocational education.

We are know that system is a part which ca non separated from another part.
Like as education system in Indonesia which have programs. That program can not
separated from another program. One of many program educational system in Indonesia
is curriculum program. Curriculum program always be changeable such us curriculum
1994, KBK, KTSP, etc. Every curriculum have many program. For example in KTSP
curriculum student must active to increase knowledge. The student not only get
knowledge from they teacher, but also they must look for by them self with read many
books, look for to the internet etc. the other program of educational system is evaluation
program. This program used to survey the ability of student in understood the lesson.
Beside that, the teacher can examine or not, can follow education level which more high
or not. But many teacher and student disagree with this program, because usually this
program have standard of value. So every student must reach it. Every year, always float
the problem about evaluation program. Many student can not past the exam, they think
the standard of value which decided by the government is very heavy to reached. They
said that evaluation program such as National test (UN) is not effective, because the
teacher more know the characteristic of student than educational system.
Educational system have goodness and badness. The goodness of educational
system is the teacher and the student will be easy to study. The badness of educational
system is program which doesnt appropriate with base competences of student. So the
government must make educational system which appropriate with base competence of
student and the material in every lesson must appropriate with development of student,
because educational system is not only station instrument of government necessity but
also system which made appropriate necessity of student.

Nowadays education system likes devil circle. If there have said that UN is not
needed, because which know about the student in the school is their teacher. That
statement is true, but in fact on field, ever we looks the report score has manipulation.
Back to UN problem, competency of human cannot do by standardization and ranking,
because all of them have advantage and disadvantage, and if we want make
standardization the education system, in Indonesia must improve more than last years.
And also standardization have purpose for groups which have the same base
competences. Our educational system are more force the children for understanding all
of their lesson, with subject matter such abstract.
According to me, the education system in Indonesia need to change an mean not
all have change for shattering the old education system with change the new method.
But we must cooperate to cover the holes in education world now days and also the
education in Indonesia not only become responsibility by government but also all of
people.
And if talking again about education system in Indonesia, that obliges students
only to memorize and not really comprehend, it has been going on for several
generations. According Bod Sadina in one seminar in one city in Indonesia, he said
about the human resources in Indonesia who are smart, memorizing theories perfectly.
Unfortunately they don not get time to apply the theories. It means those brilliant human
resources are not really ready to be used at work places. The deterioration of
educational system in Indonesia is not simply the policy of the government to give high
school more burden in the national examination. It is more thought and complicated.
And actually there is not stupid people, only their were late to understand what their
competency from childhood. So we cannot force the children to understand, but we
must teach them with look what they need and developing their psychology. And
teaching mean is preparing the child for facing the real life, which make themselves do
not depend with another people so they can finish their problem wisely. And also do not
forget that our education system only be the tool satisfied of the government, and the
government likes close their eyes with the idea of their people.
