Mid Term Test-3; Elective: Advanced Structural Design,Dt.29.10.

2014
1. Write in not more than five lines
(a) Distinguish silo and bunker (b) What are the General Characteristics of Storage Structures?
(c)Distinguish shallow and deep beams
2. A Cylindrical Silo having the ratio of height (Cylindrical portion) to the diameter of 5 is required to
store 2500kN of Wheat weighing 8kN/m3. The coefficient of friction between grain and concrete is
0.444 and that between grains is 0.466. Design the reinforcement in the wall and conical bottom of the
Silo. Assume M25 grade concrete and Fe-415 grade steel.
3. Design a Circular Bunker to store 20 tonnes of Coal. Density of coal is assumed to be 9kN/m3. Angle
of repose of coal is 30 degrees. Design the necessary steel assuming the grade of concrete M20 and
steel Fe-415 grade. Sketch the details of reinforcement in the bunker.
4. A continuous deep beam with an interior span of 9m has an overall depth of 4.5m. The width of
support is 0.9m and the width of beam is 400mm. The beam supports a uniformly distributed live load
of 100kN/m. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
5 A simply supported deep beam has an overall depth of 4m and an effective span of 6m. The width of
the beam is 400mm. The beam supports a udl of 300kN/m. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel
