Modern research at Swedish universities and companies has

resulted in a number of successful inventions. Some examples are:
the computer mouse, Bluetooth for internet mobility, the pacemaker,
the Tetra Pak beverage packaging system, the dialysis machine,
and internet applications such as Skype and Spotify.

These fairly recent inventions build on a long history of excellence

in academia and research. Sweden is the home of the prestigious
Nobel Prize, and has outstanding universities dating back to the
15th century.

degree
programs

In line with the Bologna Processthe Europe-wide drive for conformity in higher educationSwedish
universities have switched to a new degree structure. There are two masters degree qualifications
available: a one-year and a two-year program. Sweden has also adopted the European Credit Transfer
and Accumulation System (ECTS), the European standard for attainment of study credits and grading.

In Sweden, studies take place in a slightly different format than in other countries. Instead of studying
several courses at once throughout an entire semester or year, students generally study just one course
at a time, for a shorter period of several weeks. The Swedish semester is therefore made up of a
series of shorter courses, each followed directly by an examination. The spring term of the final year
of the masters program is usually spent writing a thesis.

There are currently over 600 one- and two-year masters programs taught in English at Swedish universities.

Once youve been accepted to a program and your visa/residence permit has been processed, start
preparing for your stay. At www.studyinsweden.se you can find information on the practical aspects
of everyday life in Sweden. Read more about Swedish culture, society, current events, and much
more at www.sweden.se.

Financial help
With a few exceptions, tuition fees are fully subsidized by the government. This applies to both
foreign and Swedish students. You do, however, need to cover your living expenses, which amounts
to approximately SEK 7300 (EUR 700) per month. This is a prerequisite for acquiring a student resi-
dence permit.

Foreign students with a residence permit are allowed to work while completing their studies.

Scholarships are also available. The Swedish Institute, a public agency, administers a limited number
of scholarships annually to foreign students and researchers from around the world. Competition is
high and recipients are chosen for their academic excellence.

The Erasmus Mundus program, which is largely aimed at non-EU students, offers generous scholar-
ships for selected courses at a number of Swedish universities.

For more information on scholarships, please visit www.studyinsweden.se/scholarships.
