Owl Craft Lesson

Monday, November 21
Grade 2 Art

BIG IDEAS/TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

The purpose of this lesson is for students to further explore their owl unit and also develop
their artistic skills. They will be adding different art materials to an owl template and exploring
texture in art.
Students are familiar with owls and their appearance, and they will also be completing a small
write-up on owls along with the art lesson.
Learners should be able to recall their prior knowledge of owls for the write up. They should
wrap up the lesson feeling confident about their ability to create art with texture.

CURRICULAR OUTCOMES
Art Program of Studies (Grade )
REFLECTION:
Component 3: Appreciation
A. Art takes different forms depending on the materials and techniques used.
DEPICTION:
Component 6 - Qualities & Details
A. Texture is a surface quality that can be captured by rubbings or markings.
B. Textures form patterns.
I can notice how objects are the same.
I can decide how useful objects are.
I can look at art and explain what I see.
I can identify shapes. I can use shapes to create my own art.
I can use different objects to create texture.
I can make new colours.
I can make my art better.
DIFFERENTIATION
There will be a writing component along with the art component. That way, students who are
waiting to receive their materials or finish early can work on that.
The students are responsible for cutting out their own owl template, but it is a wide and easy
cut out.
I will be displaying an example on the board that I will refer to during explanation. I will leave it
there for students to look at while they work, for those who rely on a visual example to further
their understanding.
ASSESSMENT

Student's art project will be graded by:

Beginning (1 / 3)

Developing (2 / 3)

Excellent (3 / 3)

Appearance &
Understanding

of expectations.
Project shows effort
and materials are
used in an
acceptable way.

Student fully
grasped the task
presented and
shows their
understanding in
through a variety of
materials being
used in an original
way.

Organization &
Neatness

Project shows a lack

of care with drawing
and use of
materials. Appears
rushed and
incomplete.

Basic effort has

been shown in
terms of neatness,

LEARNER ACTIVITIES

Verify student understanding with a thumbs up/

time for questions. Start to call up groups to the
green table pod by pod. While students are
waiting to be called to get materials, they can
begin colouring and then cutting/pasting the
template. If they finish and are still waiting, they
can begin answering questions.

Ask questions if needed. Begin

colouring, cutting, pasting. Collect
supplies and glue them. If they are
unsure if their template is too full,
they can ask me and refer to my
template.

Once materials have been distributed to each

pod, supervise those who want to collect more.
If a student is done their craft, collect it(with a
name!) and move it to another space.

Complete craft and worksheet.
