Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Morgan Bailey

Date: December 4, 2016

Grade and Topic: 3rd grade Science

Length of Lesson:

Mentor Teacher: Brian Johnson

School:

Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

The unit objective is The earth is surrounded by an active atmosphere and an energy
system that controls the distribution life, local weather, climate, and global
temperature.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
With 80% accuracy, the student will match the weather tool with its matching description with a provided
matching quiz.
Given a rubric and computer, the student will create a Prezi describing each weather tool with 80% accuracy.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
GLE 0307.8.2 Use tools such as the barometer, thermometer, anemometer, and rain gauge to measure
atmospheric conditions.

ISTE Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation: Student demonstrates creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop
innovative products and processes using technology.
ISTE Standard 2: Communication and Collaboration: Student use digital media and environments to communicate and
work collaboratively including as a distance, to support individual learning, and contribute to the learning of others.
ISTE Standard 3: Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.

MATERIALS:

Computers, quiz, smart board for video and presentations, pencils, paper
Technology will be integrated by using a computer to watch the introductory video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=Vk6rP_4wpvk They will then use their own computers to research barometer, anemometer, thermometer, and rain
gauge. They will use the following websites: http://nationalgeographic.org

http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weather-instruments.htm http://climate.ncsu.edu/edu/k12/.instruments . They

will then use the website https://prezi.com to create their own Prezi to present to the class.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
The key concepts for this lesson is for the student to know the difference between the four weathering tools and
how to create a Prezi to present their information.
Rain gauge, thermometer, anemometer, barometer, presentation, research, Prezi
This connects with our previous lesson on how there are a variety of atmospheric conditions that can be
measured.
In later lessons we will learn how to use these different tools and also use Prezi in presenting other materials.
If for some reason technology is not available for all students, I will have students research and present in
bigger groups. Also, I could have students draw an example of a Prezi and how they would construct it on a
computer.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: Teacher/Student: The teacher will provide the YouTube video to watch on thermometers and
explain how this is one of the weather tools we will be researching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=Vk6rP_4wpvk (2.5 minutes)

Teacher: Show the students different tools they will be researching (barometer, thermometer, rain gauge,
and anemometer) Ask the students if they have ever used one of these tools before.(5 minutes)
Student: Will get to come up and see the tools up close. (5 minutes)
Procedures:
Step 1: Teacher: The teacher will explain to the students that they will be researching 4 different
weather tools using the internet and will use this to complete a matching quiz and to complete a Prezi.
The Prezi must contain names of all four tools and a description. Each slide must contain one tool and an
image on each slide. The teacher will also show the students ahead of time how to create a Prezi account
for when they make one. The teacher will also show them the basics to Prezi. Teacher will ask How can
you make your Prezi original? (10 minutes)
Step 2: Teacher: The teacher will pair the students into groups of two and provide each group with a
computer. (5 minutes)
Step 3: Student: The students together will research each topic and while one student types, the other
will write notes. (20 Minutes) Teacher: The teacher will provide these websites on the board for students
to use but reminds them they are not limited to these websites. http://nationalgeographic.org
http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weather-instruments.htm http://climate.ncsu.edu/edu/k12/.instruments
Step 4: Student: Once the student has researched his or her tools, they will close their computers. This
will be a signal for the teacher to pass out their matching quiz. The student will complete the quiz
together, using their notes, and then turn it in to the turn in box. (5 minutes) Teacher: The teacher will
walk around the room passing out quizzes to students who have finished their research.
Step 5: Student: The student will then begin to work on their Prezi with their partner. (20 minutes)
Teacher: The teacher will walk around and assist students who need help..
Closure: Student: Once all the students have finished, they will present their Prezi to the class. (30 minutes)
Teacher: The teacher will grade the Prezi as students present.

Quiz and rubric on next pages
MODIFICATIONS:
Students who did not master the topic will be asked to spend some one on one time with me. Students who in
the special needs program will be paired with a more enriched student during the project so they can help the
student along the way. Students also in the special needs program can complete this project with another teacher
who can help them if that is necessary.
Enriched students can include on their Prezis how to use the tool as well along with the description.
