SAFE ATC /Special Event for English Day/
1.Introduction
This contest guide contains important information needed to conduct the English
contest among the personnel of NATS division. Included are contest rules, evaluation
and detailed checklists for the various stages of contest.
1.2 Eligibility
All are welcome to participate in this language contest which is, dedicated to SAFE
synergy events 2016 Air Traffic Services Division of MCAA. The contest is open to
NATSD staff only.
The contest will be held on 21 September 2016.
2.Guideline for "We Love English" contest
2.1 Objective
Through your participation, you will experience the important benefits beyond learning
interesting activities, ideas, and events. Accordingly, the purpose of this contest is to
motivate staff into sharing their knowledge and to encourage love of learning English.
-Develop a foundation of English knowledge:
-Gain a basic understanding of the foundations needed to learn a second language.
-Focus on various language input methods
-Provides many types of activities
2.2 Guideline Overview
The contest will be presented in six stages. Each team will have nine members.
In each of these stages, one participant will participate once.
3. Contest
The contest We love English consists of the following activities:
Stage 1: "NATDS funny moments". /Homework/
In this task each team will make a bulletin board:"NATSD's funny moments". It has to
be as creative as possible. The area where teams can set up their bulletin in English
will be organized.

Stage 2: Read my lips: Two members of each team will participate. Participant A will
read the word. Participant B will try to guess words by observing the lip movements of
participant A. Participants have to complete the task in 2 minutes.
Stage 3: Captain time: Desired behavior. In this stage each captain has to burst the
balloon to get the word with its definitions. The words are our organizational core values
for example; SAFETY, ADAPTABILITY, FAIRNESS, EXCELLENCE OF PERSONALS,
ACCOUNTABILITY, TEAMWORK, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT and they have to
give 2 minute(s) speech based on their own understanding about the given
definitions.There are basically three categories comprising the evaluation of speeches:
content, oral production/speaking, and delivery.
Stage 4: Drawing English: Two members of each team will participate. In this stage
participant will be given a picture/photo. Participant A looks at his/her picture/photo
without showing participant B. Participant A will describe his/her photo/picture and
participant B attempts to draw the photo/picture based on the description given by
participant A. Then the actual picture/photo is compared to participant Bs drawing. The
drawing must not include words. Participants have to complete the task in 2 minutes.
Stage 5: Spelling Bee: Two members of each team will participate.
Participant will spell 5 words in limit of 1 minute. Participant A should pronounce the
given word. Participant B is allowed to ask the pronouncer to say the word again.
Participant B is responsible for any misunderstanding of the word unless the pronouncer
never provided a correct pronunciation.
Stage 6: /Who am I, Where am I/:Two members of each team will participate. In this
stage participant A will be given secretly written name of famous person or famous
place, that everyone knows. Participant B should ask a series of questions. These
questions should only be answered by yes or no and participant A should be sure to
remember the answers of the questions that he/she has already asked. Participant B
can ask questions until figuring out who she/he is, where she/he is. Participants have to
complete each tasks in 2 minutes total of 4 minutes.
Team supporters time: This stage one supporter of each team will participate.
First stage each supporter will empty the box full of tennis balls by shaking their body
and not touching it with hands. First finished three supporters will be participating to the
next stage. Second stage an enveloped alphabets will be given to participants. They will
build words in order from those given alphabets. Participant have to complete the task
in 2 minutes.
4. Contest rules
The contest must be held only in English.
-Every participating team has 9 members.

-Participants and Team supporters shall not be allowed to use mobile or other electric
instruments.
-At all stages, team supporters shall not give any hints or clues to the participant.Points
will be deducted from the final score, if the team supporter attempts to help.
-Participating teams are responsible for organizing team supporters.
-Replacement of any participant of a team is not allowed after registration.
-All teams shall be respectful of other teams all the time and shall conduct themselves
in professional manner.
5. Evaluation
Each contest has points and these points will make up the final score.
Final score: 100 points
Stage 1: Our funny moments - 20 points
Stage 2: Read my lips - 10 points
Stage 3: Captain time - 15 points
Stage 4: Drawing English - 10 points
Stage 5: Spelling Bee - 10 points
Stage 6: Who am I, Where am I - 10 points
Attendance, Punctuality and Personal Behavior - 20 points
Team supporter time: 5 points
Read my lips: For each correctly guessed word will be given 1 point. (One point
deducted for each incorrect answer, zero for word omitted).
Captain time: There are basically 3 categories comprising the evaluation of speeches:
content, oral production/speaking, and delivery. Points are awarded for each category
and in total will equal 15 points. Development and clarity are the sub-sets in the
category of content. In the category of oral production, speaking ability, grammar and
pronunciation are sub-sets. In the category of delivery, conviction is the sub-set.
Content is 5 points, speaking ability is 5 points, and delivery is 5 points.
Drawing English: 10 point(s) are awarded for how well the actual picture/photo is
represented.
Spelling B: The judges should listen carefully, determine whether or not the words are
spelled correctly and uphold the rules. Points are awarded for each correctly spelled
word and in total will be equal 10 points. Zero point for word omitted.
Who am I, Where am I:Points are awarded for each correct answers. Zero point for
answers omitted.
Team supporter time: Total 5 points are awarded for completed tasks. Points from this
contest will be added for final team scores.
5.1 Time keeper
There shall be one Time Keeper who shall record each stage's performance time on a
Time Record Sheet. Contest judges shall pick up the forms after the last participant has
completed.

The Time Keeper shall start the watch when the participants first word is uttered to the
audience and the watch shall be stopped with the participants last word to the
audience.
There are no disqualifications for the length of the speech/performance but penalty
points may be applied for violating minute length of speech/performance rule.
5.2 Judges
The Judges shall give their scores immediately after each performance. The judging
team will consist of Language experts.
5.3 Attendance, Punctuality and Personal Behavior
Obviously, attendance and participation are the keys to succeeding in this contest. The
attendance policy will be added to Final score of the Team. Attendance 10 points,
Punctuality 5 points, Personal Behavior 5 points.
5.4 Results
Team with highest overall score will receive prize and 2 nd and 3rd places will be awarded.
