latitude and longitude and help them understand and practice
the using an atlas or a globe.

Date: February 17, 2016

Standard(s): National Standards

NSS-GK-12 The World in Spatial Terms
and Uses of Geography

Objectives
a) Teacher Guide: Give a demonstration of the difference between latitude and longitude.
Provide examples and answer any questions or doubts regarding the subject.
b) Student Guide: The student will be provided with a worksheet that will give them the
opportunity to locate cities/states, which will identify their latitude and longitude
coordinates.
Materials & Resources: World Map, Chart, Atlas, Worksheet.
Instruction :
Information
Step#1 : Latitude & Longitude (specify skills/information that will be learned)
a. Teacher will introduce the topic of Latitude and Longitude, by demonstrating students a
chart. The chart will simplify the amp information being taught. (Information Includes)
i.
Geographic Grid : coordinated grid system to find places on ground
ii.
Latitude : measures the distance North & South of the Equator
*Lines run East-West parallel to the equator.
*Measurement starts at the equator and ranges from 0-90 degrees N/S
iii.
Longitude: measures distance East-West from Prime Meridian -0 degrees longitude
*Lines run North-South, but not parallel. They converge at poles, furthest apart at the
Equator.
* Lines of longitude range from 0-180 degrees E/W
*Define and locate Special Lines.
b. Student will observe and review the information given by the teacher and the chart.
Verification
Step #2: How to use Longitude and Longitude (demonstrate necessary information)
a. Teacher will teach students how to determine the latitude and longitude of location. As well,
as teach students to find the latitude and longitude coordinates of given location. Following
by giving 3 examples of each skill and reviewing with the class
b. Student will observe and review the information given by the teacher and student will use
their atlas to verify information given by teacher.
Activity
Step #3 : Describe Independent Activity ( to reinforce this lesson)
a. Students will use the Latitude and Longitude worksheet to locate the coordinates of each
plotted point on the activity sheet.
*Note: Use CTRL + TAB for indents in outline format.

b. Students will write the name of the city next to its plotted latitude and longitude point on the
map by using the coordinates listed.
c. Students will locate and write down the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and The Gulf of
Mexico.
d. Teacher monitors students and help with the activity or answer students questions.
Step #4 : Check for student Understanding
a. Teacher inquires students to indicate the name of the city with latitude and longitude
coordinates of 38 degrees north and 122 degrees west.
b. Teacher inquires students to provide the coordinates for Orlando, Florida.
c.
Summary :
a) Teacher Guide: The Imaginary Lines lesson plan provides knowledge of latitude and
longitude that teachers can use in their classrooms. Teaches will demonstrate a chart and
instructions to guide their students to understand how to use maps.
b) Student Guide: Students will use the Latitude and Longitude worksheet to locate places
with coordinates of latitude and longitude. The worksheet will guide students to major
bodies of water, rivers and major cities of the United States.
Homework: Now that students know how to find a location on map and find out coordinates of latitude and
longitude, they are now to find location on map of coordinates and find out which location (City, State) the
coordinates corresponds.

*Note: Use CTRL + TAB for indents in outline format.
