Digital Product
Introduction

The central focus for this lesson is understanding the processes of the evolution of technology
over time. The objectives for this lesson support this by asking students to track the evolution of a
technology directly. They are expected to look into what causes the developments in the
technology and what effects it has on society. Their documentation of the evolution helps further
their understanding and display their findings. This all aligns with the standard because they will
be making an electronic presentation using what they find and their understanding of the
evolution of technology. The chosen digital tool, Hstry, enhances this lesson because it gives the
students the chance to track and document the evolution on an actual timeline. Since it is pretty
open ended what they do with that, this can be adapted to fit many types of student's needs. They
could also work in groups to expand on the timelines or help each other with the process if
necessary. Displaying lesson objectives and an example of what the students are creating will
also help students to visualize and get ideas while they work. They will be able to revisit and
evaluate what they are working on by referring to these resources. Evolution in this sense is at
once very different and very similar to biological evolution. Discussing the differences and
similarities in these two uses of the word would be helpful for many students. Explaining that
evolution is the change in something over time, whether that is a product or an organism, would
help students to understand this process and their assignment.

Student Examples

Students do research and create a Hstry timeline.

They include pictures, information, questions,
societal influences, etc. Sources are cited and
everything is in the students own words. No less
than 10 slides. (amount of material and depth of
material can be adjusted to meet students needs)
Students present their findings to the class.
