Nicole Muffitt
As a member of Kent State Universitys Honors College, I have been gifted the chance
to earn credit by taking on individual projects. This list of works for middle school band is a
result of this opportunity and the guidance of Dr. Jesse Leyva, Director of Bands at Kent State
University.
I wanted to compile a repertoire list and chose to focus on two of my favorite topics,
middle school and ethnomusicology. Many people are nervous about middle school students as
they are known for the attitude problems associated with entering adolescence, but I feel this is
the perfect age to approach the topics of patience, compassion, and acceptance in many areas.
Music, I believe, offers the perfect backdrop to introduce cultural awareness and acceptance.
With this philosophy in mind, I began searching for titles.
Originally, I planned to include music from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Non-central
Europe, Indigenous cultures, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Pacific Islands but after
doing some preliminary research, I decided to cut out European cultures altogether. It was
simply too easy to find titles that fit the category, and the number of European-influenced works
would have far outweighed the rest of the areas listed.

On the topic of influence, I would like to stress that the majority of works presented here
are just that - products of influence. It is very hard to translate instruments from other cultures to
a band setting, and the differences in approach to rhythm, meter, and tonality are even more
difficult to translate to a middle school setting.
Having this in mind, I feel there are two things band directors need to consider when
selecting works from this list or any other work based on an unfamiliar culture: cultural
appropriation and expansion of content knowledge.
As a member of Generation Y, I have grown up with the expansive globalization brought
about by the internet, and with globalization comes the blending of cultures. In many settings,
cultures can be explored by members of other cultures in a positive respect, but it is important
that unfamiliar cultures are not misrepresented or misused. Think of the heat several schools
with Native American mascots are under; these cartoonish, misrepresentations of Native
American culture is an example of cultural appropriation. Then, you may ask, how do we
perform these works in a way that accurately represents these cultures to our students and
audiences? Content Knowledge.
When studying to teach, we learn how to blend content knowledge and pedagogy. It may
easy enough to say to ourselves I understand my music theory, I understand my music history,
I have a good idea of what to perform. I have enough content knowledge., but this idea is
simply not enough. Each time we present a new work to our ensembles, we must be able to
present to them the context of the work. This should involve the general form of the work,
relevant historical information, background information on the composer, melodic content, and
style among other things. When performing a piece of music that has a non-Western emphasis,
it is crucial that you explain to your students the legitimacy (or lack thereof) of the work and what
that means both as a performer of music and a global citizen.
For instance, many bands have performed John Barnes Chances Variations on a
Korean Folksong. Playing this work broadens your students ears and technical abilities, but
without cultural insight, your students miss out on the global relevance of the work. The folksong
featured in this work is called the Arirang, and it is a very well known folk song in Korea. It
speaks of a river, the Arirang, and is considered Koreas unofficial national anthem. We would

not have our students play My Country tis of Thee without a sense of reverence, and so to play
Variations on a Korean Folksong without the necessary context and musical respect, we are
doing a disservice to our Korean brothers and sisters and to our students, whose ideologies
towards other cultures will shape the future of not only our own country, but the world.
However, playing multicultural music does not have to be seen as a whole lot of fruitless
work! Multicultural music offers music teachers an opportunity to present new ideas to their
students, especially pertaining to tonality and rhythm. Using the same example, Variations on a
Korean Folksong is a perfect selection to use when teaching your students about the pentatonic
scale, knowledge that can translate to music theory, jazz, and even composition for students
who may be interested in that path. It also offers a variety of meters.
While not ever middle school piece of music will offer the same variety of tonality and
meter, multicultural music is a great way to catch students interest and vary their musical diet.
Selections on this list and others will help your students open both their ears and eyes as they
approach music and the world.
As it stands, this project is a good, but developing resource for band directors. It is a mile
long and an inch deep in many respects.
In the future, I would like to expand this project by including key and time signatures for
each work, the percussion required, and any unique compositional techniques that teachers
should be aware of before choosing to perform any of these works. I also wish to meet with
members of Kent State Universitys Ethnomusicology program to discuss which works stand out
as being most authentic. I would also like to compile examples of lesson plans for a few of these
works.
Further, I would like to get this list published through a music education journal, and
present this research at a music education conference, such as the OMEA conference or the
Midwest Clinic.

Lastly, and most importantly, I would like to thank Dr. Jesse Leyva for being an
outstanding professor and mentor. My future as an educator will be greatly impacted by what I
have learned from him.

This innovative work is based on the Egyptian Sun God Ra and features a wealth of Middle
Eastern percussion instruments. A mystical opening leads into the main theme of the work,
representing the beginning of day. The second section, Journey through the sky, takes the
listener on a journey with Ra as he flies through the clouds, following the sun's rotation. A dark
passage represents his journey to the Underworld before the original theme returns once more
to represent Renewal. Music then builds as an incredible series of modulating chords and
textures all combine to bring the piece to a tremendous and powerful conclusion. Extremely
compelling!
The essence of the Egyptian sun god Ra is heard in this intriguing programmatic piece. The
opening section, "Sunrise," represents the beginning of a new day. The music becomes more
vibrant as Ra is reborn and emerges as the sun. "Journey through the Sky," the second portion,
takes the listener on Ra's daily excursion as he flies through the sky to a lively and dance-like
theme. The music turns darker and more subdued as Ra makes his descent into the
"Underworld." Finally the piece leads to the "Renewal," which completes the full cycle of the sun
god's day. Captivating! J.W.Pepper

Publishers Note
Sakura Sakura is perhaps the most famous of all Japanese folksongs. It is recognized
throughout the world. This setting was done as a gift from Ray Cramer to the Musashino
Academia Musicae and the student members of their fine wind ensemble. Within a few months
after the premiere, the manager of the wind ensemble, Koichi Onodera, died at an all too early
age. He loved this setting and the piece brought him tears with each hearing. During Cramer's
stay in Tokyo, while working with the wind ensemble, Cramer and Onodera developed a very
close friendship. Cramer greatly admired Onodera's intense loyalty and dedication to the school
and the students. Ray Cramer felt it was only fitting that this work be dedicated to his memory.
The setting is very Japanese in style, character and timbre. Take great care in carefully
balancing the band, to insure that all moving lines are clearly heard at all times. Enjoy!

Publishers Note
Inspired by Japanese folklore, this incredibly colorful work is based on two authentic folksongs
that are both related to the mythical kitsune, or fox spirits. The use of alto and soprano
recorders and unique keyboard / percussion effects helps create timbres and textures not often
found in works at this level. A mysterious opening portrays an owl guarding a forest against
wolves and kitsune. This moves into a vivid and wild depiction of the malicious yako (the
mischevious trickster). The music then relaxes to depict the zenko, the benevolent kitsune.
Eventually, the two compete against each other as the music comes to a riveting conclusion and
your percussionists transform into a massive taiko drum ensemble. Incredible sounds for young
bands!

Letter from Sado is an exciting new piece for young band based on a Japanese haiku of the
same name. Sado refers to Sado Island in Japan in which various artists, religious and military
leaders were sent in exile many years ago. The island has historically had a strong community
of taiko drummers and as such, the piece incorporates optional homemade taiko drums.

To capture the idea of interpretation and the concept of reading between the lines, the students
are invited to become decision makers about particular sections in the music. For example, the
opening and closing sections of the piece use the same material, which is a selection of
repeated melodic figures. The students themselves decide how to play these figures as
individuals, in small teams and then as a whole band. Their decisions include ideas regarding
tempo (how fast?), dynamics (how loud?), and articulation (smooth, short, or hard?). To inspire
them, we use the haiku poem; i.e., the opening section invites the students to play the material
as if it were a 'stormy, wild sea' and the closing section invites the students to play the same
melodic figures but this time, draw their inspiration from 'Heaven's River,' or as we know it, the
Milky Way. In-between, there is an elaborate, heavily textured section that becomes increasingly
powerful. The music doesn't rest harmonically until the whole band plays in unison. These
multiple layers of sound represent the many thoughts and ideas that would have surrounded
those individuals sent to Sado Island in exile, the final unison is representative of their own
breakthrough experience sending them on a pathway to inner peace and acceptance. Jodie

Publishers Note
This three-movement work is based on traditional children's songs from Singapore. Movement 1
is based on Gelang sipaku gelang, a well-loved folk song that has become associated with the
Geylang area - a song about community spirit and people living together in harmony. The slower
second movement utilizes Di-tanjung katong, a song popular with childrens' choirs. Finally,
Movement 3 blends two traditional melodies: Lenggang kangkung, which tells of the graceful

swaying of watercress in the rice paddy fields; and Munnaeru vaalibaa, a traditional
Singaporean song that has become a patriotic anthem.

This three-movement suite is based upon authentic Singaporean folk songs. Tuneful and
musically rewarding, each movement has its own unique character. The entire suite is about
eight minutes in duration, making it a very nice addition to any concert program. J.W.Pepper

Composers Note
Singapura Suite was commissioned by Singapore's Ministry of EducationExtracurricular
Activities Branch to serve as a compulsory piece for the 1999 Singapore Youth Festival.
"Singapura" is the original name of Singapore in Malay, the native language there. Because
Singapore is one of the most important harbors in the world, this two-piece work opens with a
seaman's dance. An authentic melody, Chan Mali Chan, is woven into the middle of this first
part, whose ABA form becomes clear through the recapitulation of the seaman's dance in a
somewhat altered form. Singapore is also a dynamic city-state alive with excitement, thus the
second part begins with a fitting dance, a fast bourre. As contrast there is a second authentic
melody, Dayung Sampan, a more easygoing sailing song. This short but curious suite ends in
high spirits with a recapitulation of the beginning.

The simple melody and harmony creates a background for your percussionists to show off on a
variety of instruments. What makes this piece so unique is that the wind parts are involved,
serving a more important role than accompaniment. A great way to feature percussion while
providing plenty of teaching opportunities for the winds as well.

Your percussionists will have lots of fun with the calypso-style rhythms, while your band floats
attractive melodies above their groove. The wind parts add a nice sparkle and follow the
traditional rondo form. J.W.Pepper

Publishers Note
Music from the Caribbean is instantly recognizable - it somehow conveys sunshine and lazy
summers and is full of the feel-good factor. It is this infectious happiness that composer Philip
Sparke has tried to capture in Clarinet Calypso. Featuring the percussion section throughout
(which may be elaborated if more players are available), it opens with an optional clarinet solo
and then duet before the whole band takes up the theme. The brass then presents a contrasting
second theme, which is repeated with different instrumentations. Following a brief climax, the
clarinets reverse their roles and the piece ends as it began.
Here's a real "feel-good" Caribbean-style tune the whole audience will enjoy! The captivating
calypso beat and sparkling clarinet themes recall days filled with warm sunshine and ocean
breezes. There's plenty of percussion parts to go around, too. The clarinet parts are very
playable, with only the first clarinets having to cross the break. J.W.Pepper

instruments. After a mysterious introduction, a theme is presented in a call-and-response
fashion that is passed throughout the ensemble. The piece develops seamlessly from section to
section as it builds to a dynamic conclusion. An excellent work for concert or festival!

A dramatic overture for younger bands! A slow mysterious-sounding opening with a theme
that's introduced by the clarinets is followed by a more aggressive section in 3/4 that's carried
by the percussion. A colorful selection that's great for introducing the concept of chromaticism

Grandmother Song is an introduction to the Mohican tradition of sung syllables, or what
Native Americans call vocables. Combining them with traditional wood flute songs, composer
Brent Michael Davids offers a fresh look at the sound of Native American songs. Band
instruments are performed less as musical instruments and more as talking sticks, singing
reeds, rustling winds and shooting thunder. Through this beautiful ballad, students are given the
materials to understand how Native Americans celebrate the world around them through the
blending of words and song.

Publishers Note
Meaning fire in the Iroquois language, Katsista was inspired by traditional Iroquois
ceremonies involving the extinguishing of old household fires, the stirring of ashes, and the
rekindling of new fires. The melody, while original, imitates native American songs in its
simplicity, inflection, and quiet beginning. Ample use of steady-paced percussion provides a
ceremonial feel.

Gradys composition Katsista gets its title from the Iroquois word for firein particular the ritual
fire that represented the seat of power in the Iroquois nation. Grady explains that the inspiration
for the piece came while he was spending time with his wife and twin sons sitting around the
fire. He remembered stories of the Iroquois Midwinter Festival, and the ritual of extinguishing
and rekindling the ceremonial fires. This colorful celebration, which includes expressive chants,
feather dances, and drum dances, was a natural inspiration for a piece of music for young band.
Grady says that Iroquois music is characterized by plaintive melodies and frequent use of
flutes. He also lists a number of percussion instruments used in Iroquois music, including
rawhide and wooden water drums, rattles, and ankle bells. As a result, flute and percussion
predominate. GIA Publications

Paloyoloyo, Anonymous Cahuilla Indian Composer ca. 1600. Originating around four hundred
years ago, this song is an extract from the "Birdsong" cycle, songs of celebration and
commemoration which reminded people of their migration on this land. The earliest Cahuilla
musicians played a rattle as accompaniment, but by the time of the missions, the drum had
been imported from other Native American nations. This composition is cast in two parts. The
allegro section is based on a fragment of the original melody that is passed through several
sections of the band. The opening melody of the slow section is a countermelody to the original
melody, which is finally introduced in the second part of this section in on voice of a woodwind
trio. The third statement of the melody and countermelodies for full band is followed by the
melody for one solo instrument with drum accompaniment. In effect, everything that comes
before can be considered a fanfare to the presentation to this beautiful melody.

At the height of his career in the mid-1930s, Leroy Anderson began arranging for Arthur
Fiedler's Boston Pops Orchestra. Later, Fiedler encouraged him to write his own tunes for the
Pops. His compositions, more than 50 in number, virtually define the sound of the contemporary
American pops orchestra. Blue Tango was a #1 hit in 1951, juxtaposing the charismatic melody
over a traditional tango pulse. The work captured the spirit of an era. This new edition was
originally arranged by the composer for concert band and has been freshly re-engraved with a
full score for the first time, permitting a uniformity of articulation throughout the work.

This no.1 hit from the 50's continues to help define the sound of contemporary American
popular orchestra music. Arranged for concert band by the composer, the charismatic melody
and the traditional tango style combine with subtle blues influences to capture the spirit of the
era while creating a work of world-wide appeal. J.W.Pepper

melancholy. In the middle, an anachronistic march "invades" the melancholy mood and
attempts to banish all traces of the tango. And yet the tango and its mood of regret return. No
longer capable of much energy, however, the sad dancegradually fades away. This piece was
written as a companion movement to the composer's Prelude & Fughetta (also available from

Explore Middle Eastern sounds with this work that combines authentic traditional melodies and
rhythms with original music. After a haunting opening, authentic Middle Eastern percussion
instruments create the groove that accompanies the folk song Ala Dalona. As the orchestration
builds, original themes are intertwined before the percussion ensemble becomes the focus of
the third section. The final melody, Tafta Hindi, develops until it morphs into an ostinato over a
magnificent presentation of the original theme that is found throughout the work. A riveting
ending brings this thrilling work to a dynamic close!

be played as fast as possible followed by a contrasting slow section. The closing is a powerful

under the fingers, and it sounds much more difficult than it is. A great festival opener or closer!
