ETHNOGRAPHY ROUGH DRAFT
CELL PHONE USE & CELL PHONE ETIQUETTE
The researcher went to Concord Mills mall on
Monday, October 10, 2016. He spent approximately
an hour and four minutes (5:03 PM-6:07 PM). The
researcher observed and watched people in front of
the Mens Wearhouse and the Concord Mills Food
Court. For the time he was there, the researcher
saw a variety of things from a family of three
shopping for clothes in Childrens Place to a five
year old girl skipping through the mall without a
care in the world to a 40 (possibly 50) year old man
sitting at a table looking off into the distance,
contemplating or thinking about something. For the
majority of the observation, he observed numerous
people on their cell phones, most of them talking,
texting, or playing games on their phones/mobile
devices. For instance, he observed a female who
was about 20 years old on the phone and was
apparently ecstatic about something as she
exclaimed, Oh you already know!. Also, a male
was standing by a prop palm tree in the mall on his

phone as he was possibly sending a text message

or making a phone call. Overall, throughout the
observation, the researcher noticed and or
observed about 20-30 people on their cell phones
doing something whether it was talking on the
phone, texting, or playing games. This information
led the researcher to select his discourse group
which is in general cell phone users. It also led him
to the question or think about what people typically
use their cell phones for, who uses their cell
phones the most in todays world, and is there a
such thing as cell phone etiquette and if so, what is
it.
The researcher conducted an interview about
cell phone use and cell phone etiquette with a 41
year old woman, Patricia, the interview is displayed
below:
