Title Of Unit: Proportional Relationships Subject/Course/Grade: Math 7th
Dates of Unit:
Designer(s): Math team
Stage 1- Desired Results
Standards: (ALL standards addressed in unit) 7.RP.A.2 - Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities. a. Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin. b. Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships. c. Represent proportional relationships by equations. For example, if total cost, t, is proportional to the number, n, of items purchased at a constant price, p, the relationship between the total cost and the number of items can be expressed as t = pn. d. Explain what a point (x,y) on the graph of a proportional relationship means in terms of the situation, with special attention to the points (0,0) and (1,r), where r is the unit rate. Big Idea or Concept: Recognizing patterns/relationships in given numbers. Be able to graph accurately (x,y) Be able to understand the application of equations and fractions.
Essential Questions:
I catch 8 Pokemon for every 100
steps. If I have caught 34 Pokemon how many steps have I taken?
Are these numbers proportional? Why
or Why not? Define Proportional? How do I know the relationship between numbers? What methods can I use to see the relationship of given numbers?
Students will understand/know
The relationship to ratios and fractions, graphs, equations and tables of given numbers How to accurately read and create a graph with given numbers.
Students will be able to
Recognize relationships (proportions) of given numbers. Represent the relationship of numbers using different methods (Graphs, Equations, Fractions, Tables) Accurately graph a word problem. Create a word problem given a set of numbers/word problem. Define proportional.
Stage 2- Assessment Evidence
Monitoring and Feedback:
Other Evidence:
Pre Test (before lesson)
Hand written test with graphics
Accurately completing the graph
[students often mix up (x,y) with (y,x)]
Group work, Think-Pair-Share.
Written definition of proportions
Post Test (after lesson)
Hand written test with graphics Active questions to find answers inside the classroom.
Paper Test
Revisit (feedback) Use board Use examples Use cultural examples applicable to students
Labeling Graphs and Tables correctly.
Justification of proportional or nonproportional numbers.
