1.0 Draught, trim and stability

DWT is a measure how much mass


a ship is carrying or can safely
carry it doesnt include the weight
of ship. DWT is the sum of the
weights of cargo, fuel, fresh water,
ballast water, provisions,
passengers and crews.

1.1.1 Defines
Deadweight
Deadweight tonnage is a measure of a vessels
weight carrying capacity and doesnt include
the weight of the ship itself. Is shouldnt be
confused with displacement (weight of water
displaced) which includes the ships own weight
nor other volume or capacity measure such as
gross tonnage or net tonnage (or their more
archaic forms gross register tonnage or net
register tonnage) .

Displacement
Light Displacement (LDT)
The weight of ship excluding cargo, fuel, water,
ballast, stores, passengers, but with water in boilers to
steaming level.
Loaded Displacement
The weight of the ship including cargo, passengers,
fuel, water, stores, dunnage, and such other items
necessary for use on a voyage.
Full Loaded Displacement
Full load is defined as the displacement of a vessel
when floating at its greatest allowable draft as
established by classification societies (and designated
by its waterline.)

1.1.2 - Ships load line

TF (Freshwater) - The deepest permitted


draft in freshwater considering that the vessel
floats deeper in freshwater that in saltwater.
T (Tropics) - Deepest permitted draft din
tropical water considering the benign
weather conditions in tropical water. Example
1 April to 30 Nov.
S (Summer) - Deepest permitted draft during
summer considering benign weather
conditions. Example 16 October to 15 April.

W (Winter) - Deepest permitted draft


during winter considering rougher
weather condition. Example 16 April to
15 October
WNA (Winter North Atlantic) - Deepest
draft permitted considering the rough
weather conditions likely to be
encountered during winter in the North
Atlantic.

1.1.3 hydrostatic Particular


Hydrostatic particular of a real ship will
be different. Consider the ship whose
lines plan is shown below. At different
draughts, the ship will have different
waterplane area, volumes and
centroids. Hance, the hydrostatic
praticularly will vary as the drughts
changers.
Using
Obtain hydrostatic particular once
draught is known
Obtain draught/ other particular once
the displacement/ other particular is
known.
