1. James, Doris J., and Lauren E. Glaze. Mental Health Problems of Prison and Jail
Inmates. Washington, DC: U.S. Dept. of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of
Justice Statistics, 2006. Internet resource.
This is a national government publication. It uses self-reported data to estimate the
prevalence of mental health among incarcerated jail and prison inmates. This is a source of
statistics and comparisons between inmates who suffer from mental illness to those that do not.
I think all of the information is very valuable to my inquiry question. I cant know how
important it is for prisoners to receive mental health care without knowing how prevalent mental
illness is in the prison community. I was able to evaluate the findings from the special report and
apply as background to my inquiry.
This source was determined credible after evaluating the criteria. This information was
published September of 2006 and was updated in December of 2006. This older source will work
just as well for my inquiry. The information relates to my topic. Lauren E. Glaze and Doris J.
James are both statisticians for the Department of Justice with a B.A. degree in criminology and
criminal justice from the University of Maryland. (The process you took to make sure this was a
credible source was very exceptional and thoroughly executed.)

2. Baillargeon, Jacques, Stephen K. Hoge, and Joseph V. Penn. "Addressing the Challenge
of Community Reentry Among Released Inmates with Serious Mental Illness." American
Journal of Community Psychology. 46 (2010): 361-375. Print.
This is an article published by American Journal of Community Psychology. Its aim was to
talk about the challenges of reentering and reintegrating back into communities for prison

inmates in the United States. It addresses the challenges from a psychological and economic
view point. This article also discusses the importance and challenges of providing the proper
psychiatric care in the prison system for the inmates.
After reading this article I learned more information on the quality of psychiatric care in
prisons in the United States. The quality of this care is a very important role in the community
reentry of inmates with mental illnesses. Ultimately the goal is for inmates to be released so they
can adjust back to society problems free. This is all relevant to my inquiry about the importance
of adequate mental health care in the prison systems.
I know this article is a credible source because the publisher is a publishing company of
academic journals and books. Add some examples of the specific books written as well as the
journals. The authors Baillargeon and Penn both are scholars from the University of Texas
Medical Branch. Hoge is also a scholar from New York.

3. Hills, Holly, Christine Siegfried, and Alan Ickowitz. Effective Prison Mental Health
Services: Guidelines to Expand and Improve Treatment. Washington, D.C: U.S. Dept. of
Justice, National Institute of Corrections, 2004. Internet resource.
This source discusses what constitutes as effective prison mental health services. It also lays
out specific guidelines to expanded and improve mental health treatment in prisons. It begins by
introducing the issue and the challenges. It then goes to explain the benefits of effective mental
health care in prisons.
This article related to my inquiry in so many ways. It allowed me to scope out the
problems. The prison system has failed inmates with mental health in different aspects. By

discussing what improvements need to be made shows the importance of effective care. These
inmates deserve proper care in order to be reintroduced to the community.
This source is proven credible. It was published by the National Institute of Corrections which is
an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons with a credible
reputation. It was published in 2004 which does not interfere with how it works in my inquiry.

4. Konrad, Norbert, Birgit Vollm, and David N. Weisstub. Ethical Issues in Prison
Psychiatry. , 2013. Internet resource.
This source talks about prison psychiatry from an ethics point of view. It looks at several
different countries to describe the models and ethical issues of prison psychiatric health care.
These issues included the professional medical roles of psychiatrist working in prisons,
involvement of psychiatrist in disciplinary or coercive measures, confidentiality and so on.
I found this source very interesting. It is one of my sources that looks at the profession from a
global aspect. It was relevant for my inquiry because it goes into more depth about the
challenges of this profession. The description within this section uses much description as well
as makes me very intrigued to read about this topic once it is written and final.
I know this article is a credible source because the publisher is a publishing company of
academic journals and books. The editor Norbert Konrad is a scholar from the Institute of
Forensic Psychiatry, University Medicine Berlin. Editor Birgit Vollm is a scholar from the
section of Forensic Psychiatry Division at University of Nottingham and Rampton Hos. Editor
David N. Weisstub is also a scholar from the University of Montreal Fac. Medicine.

5. Pycroft, Aaron, and Suzie Clift. Risk and Rehabilitation: Management and Treatment of
Substance Misuse and Mental Health Problems in the Criminal Justice System. Bristol:
Policy Press, 2012. Internet resource.
This source is a book published by Policy Press. It explores the notions of risk and
rehabilitation by the means of court orders. They take the context of these court orders and
compare it within a research base.
In this source it discusses the management and treatment of mental health problems in the
criminal justice system. This provides a lot of background for my inquiry. By exploring the risk
of management and treatment the importance and seriousness of this profession is highlighted.
This source was originally published in 2012 and updated in 2013. Editor Aaron Pycroft is a
Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Portsmouth.
