Reflection
Outcome#1
I demonstrated substantive knowledge of the historical, political, cultural, and social
experiences of the Mexican American living in the United States. During the course my group
had to present about the history in music. I learned about how the accordion was introduced into
our culture and how it stayed with our music today. It stayed mostly with Norteas, it came from
German culture. It intertwined with our culture when the Mexican and German immigrants lived
together in little neighborhoods.
I demonstrated and awareness of civil rights, and understanding of historical
discrimination and the challenges and pressures to assimilate in order to better understand the
plight of Mexican Americans and to more effectively provide services to members of the
Mexican American community. In class we watched a video about Cesar Chavez, with that
playing I started to learn about how the farm workers were being treated. Cesar Chavez was
changed the way they were paid and treated. This showed me that Mexicans can make a real
difference in this world and how we were treated.
Outcome #2
I effectively discussed and wrote about events and practices prevalent among members
with in the Mexican-American community. With our final project we were supposed to go out in
the community, find an issue, and create a program to help solve the problem. I learned about the
issue with Mental Illness and the Mexican American culture. I learned the issues the Mexican
can have with dealing with getting help, and also what could make a change in it.

I effectively discuss and write about their understanding of issues specific to the Mexican
American community and utilizing effective problem solving skills to develop strategic
interventions to address the challenges. With our final project we were asked to once we
identified the problem in our community we were to make a program to fix it. Once I saw the
problem with mental illness in the Mexican American community. I created the program to make
the Mexican American community more comfortable to accept the topic.
Outcome #3
I interpreted information represented in data, graphs, tables, statistics, and research
studies to more effectively understand individual and group patterns of behavior amongst the
Mexican American communities. When I was doing my final project, I read a lot of statistics that
were written about Latinos. It discussed about how within 16,000 Latino in the study 27% had
high depression, within that 27%, only 5% were taking antidepressants. I was able to understand
this statistic and learn that this is a real problem for Mexican Americans.
I interpreted information represented in data, graphs, tables, statistics, and research
studies to more effectively understand individual and group patterns of behavior amongst the
Mexican American communities. When we were discussing D.A.C.A and D.A.P.A we were
talking about the graphs that show how many people in the United States dont know how to
apply. With looking at the charts, I was able to see that just the application progress alone is too
difficult for new arriving Mexicans to understand.
Outcome #4
Demonstrate key aspects of critical thinking in comparatively and analytically assessing
and articulating cultural patterns that have shaped the Mexican American family and its

members. We talked about how certain family view shape the family. If the father in the family
has machismo towards the world. It is most likely that his child is going to have that same
attitude. We discussed that this could down in generations until someone changes that kind of
mindset in the family.
I demonstrated key aspects of critical thinking through the use of identify applicable
culturally acceptable interpersonal skills when working with Mexican Americans. We learned
that we have to be respectful of their culture and their beliefs. We cant always make them have
the same opinion we do. For example, in class we talked about how if we have a client who is
getting abused by her husband and we see the bad in it and we know she should leave him, she
might not want to. We have to respect that, and be patient with her because she is saying no for a
reason because it is her belief.
I demonstrated key aspects of critical thinking through the understanding of racial
development models of identity and self-concept that will facilitate more effective interpersonal
approaches when working with diverse groups in the community. We discussed in class about
people who dont understand a certain culture and work with that group every day. In this class
we learned about why the Mexican culture expresses itself the way it does. We learned, we need
to stop thinking of the Mexican help just by the stereo types we hear and actually understand
them as a culture.

Outcome #5
I understand the complexity and differences embodied with the Mexican American
culture. We compared how the Mexican culture is different than the American culture. We

compared how different we treat our families, for example the Mexican culture always puts
family first and always wants them to be close. But in the American culture that might not
always be the same thing because some families find other places to put them besides with them.
We discussed how being in the Mexican American culture might be complexed because of the
decisions we have to make since we are in a different country and culture.
I demonstrated an awareness of the need for social justice amongst disenfranchised,
discriminated and oppressed groups. We discussed in class how it is hard for a new arriving
Mexican to work the system and succeed. They are designed to be just going through the system
filling out endless paperwork, and never be given hope that their lives will get better. We are all
looked at undocumented even though some of us have paper and the others are trying all they
can to get paper.
