Grade Four Unit Plan

Remembrance, Peace, Love and Friendship with Recorder November 2016

7 classes

Generative Topic: At this point in grade four, students are primarily using their
prior knowledge to further develop their musical skill. Throughout October and
November students will further their musical knowledge, skills, and attitudes
through learning the recorder and completing recorder karate. Recorders are a
beginner instrument that prepares students for playing various instruments in
the future. They will understand the basics of recorder (fingerings, tonging,
tone quality, notes, etc.). They will also understand that when it comes to
reading music, there are more ways then Sol- Fa. They will learn how a staff
works (5 lines, 4 spaces) and they will begin to understand how the notes they
are playing relate to the notes on a staff. Students will also begin to understand
the rules with playing an instrument together as a class, which will help
prepare them for the upcoming band years.
