Have students write 1-2 things that they already know about the Apalachee tribe and add
post-it to the K section of the KWL
Have students write 1-2 things that they want to know about the Apalachee tribe and add
post-it to the W section of the KWL
3. Teacher write on the board the word Apalachee; the students will write down the
word in the 4th page of their flipbook
4. Pottery Activity (ESOL): The teacher explains that the Apalachee are known for their
pottery skills. (20 minutes)
Teacher shows the following image to the class
(https://karenjoslin.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/apalacheepottery_002.jpg?
w=359&h=359&crop=1) of a Apalachee vase.
The teacher then gives each group a set of clay; the class will begin to create their own
Apalachee vase and create a drawing that represents the tribe.
This hands-on activity will stimulate their hands, creativity, and give them an opportunity to
experience what pottery is like.
Students will draw a picture of their clay pottery into their flipbook with label and
explanation of purpose
5. Teacher will ask the class, Do you think the Apalachee had jobs? (ESOL/ESE)
(5 minutes)
Small group discussion on their thoughts for anticipatory question.
Tribal groups will offer their opinions and the teacher will segue into the real jobs the
Apalachee had during their time.
The teacher explains that all the tribes had their own jobs but the jobs of the Apalachee will
be discussed.
The men were in charge of hunting and collecting food; the men were also the soldiers who
went into battle if a war occurred, and the men were the only ones capable of becoming
chief.
The women were the farmers, cooks, and took care of the children.
Both men and women took part in storytelling, art, music, and medicine. In addition,
children sometimes helped the men hunt and helped the women farm.
Students will write important information and description of tribal roles and who within the
tribe is in charge of doing what.
6. Writing Prompt: (10 minutes)
Materials handler from each tribe will pass out printed paragraph frames.
The students are asked to write a paragraph answering the following prompt:
If you were an Apalachee child, which parent would you like to help? Why?
The students will cut out the prompt and paste it in their flipbook when they are complete.
For ESOL and ESE students, the teacher will provide one-on-one time.
7. Have the students write 1-2 things that they learned about the Apalachee tribe on a
post-it note have them add it to the L section of the KWL chart (5 minutes) [exit ticket]
