variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by
graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by
inspection.
Lesson Title

Lesson Objective(s)

Solving Linear Systems by Substitution

Estimate the number of solutions by

inspecting the equation of the line.
Solve the system of linear equations
algebraically by using substitution.

INSTRUCTION
Instructional Strategies

Interactive instruction: In the lesson introduction, a system of linear equations will be given. For
this problem, students have to find the solution to the system using the only method they know,
solving a system of linear equations by graphing. For this activity, time will be given to work with a
partner or in groups. The group that finishes first will go to the board and graph the equations to
find a solution to the system of equations.
Quick Talk: In the middle of the lesson body the students will be asked if there is another way to
solve a system of linear equations. A few minutes will be given to allow the students share their
ideas on a possible way to solve the system of equations.
Direct Instruction: A demonstration or a think aloud will be used to introduce the new content, solve
a system of linear equations by substitution.

Student Does

1) The teacher will introduce the lesson by giving

a warm up problem.

1) The students will have five minutes

to discuss and work with a partner or in
groups to solve the system of linear
equations by graphing both equations.
The first group that finishes will go to
the board and graph the equations and
give their solution to the system.

2) After the students solve the given system of

equations, the teacher will ask them if there if
another way to find a solution to the system of
equations.

2) The students will do quick talk to

share their ideas on a possible way or
method to solve a system of linear
equations without having to graph them.

3) During the last minute or two of the lesson

introduction, the teacher will go over the solution
that one of the groups wrote on the board. The

3) The students should pay attention,

check their work and ask any questions.

teacher will ask if there are any question.

1) The teacher will start the lesson by passing

out a thinking map that will help students with
estimating the number of solutions to a system of
equations by looking at the slopes of the
equations. Once every student has a thinking map,
the teacher will explain that the thinking map can
only be use when the equations are in standard
form.

1) The students will pay attention and

fill out the thinking map. This map will
help them estimate the number of
solutions to the system of linear
equations. Which will be helpful for
another activity. Once the students are
done filling out the thinking map, they
will get in partners and they will explain
each other how to use the thinking map.

2) Once the students understand how to use the

thinking map. The students will be work on a
worksheet for 15 20 minutes, police chase.

2) The students will work on a

worksheet that consists of 7 question.
They will work on question 1 6 in
groups. Question 7 involves using
substitution. A brief lecture will be
given to introduce substitution.

3) The teacher will introduce the new method to

solver a system of equations. First, the idea or
rewriting a number or expression. By doing this
the idea of substituting a number with an
equivalent expression will be easier to understand
for the students. This will be follow by a
demonstration or think aloud on a simple example
using substitution to solve a system of equations.
More examples will be given.

The teacher will close the lesson by comparing again

the methods of solving the system of equation by
graphing and substitution and that on the following
day they will learn another method to solve a system
or linear equations.
Also, on the last 5 minutes of class the students will
write on their journals a short paragraph on how to
use substitution to solve a system of equations.

The students will get their journals to write

a short paragraph on how to use
substitution to solve a system of
equations.

Assessments: Formal and Informal
There will be no formal assessments during the lesson. The teacher will do an informal assessment
by walking around class, to ask questions and check on students work. Checking the students
journals and homework will be a form of formal assessment.
Where will student struggle? How will you address their needs? What kind of differentiated

instruction will you provide?

Students might struggle on finding out what they need to substitute in for x or y.
