Methodological Challenges and Directions for Child Development Research.
John Wiley & Sons Inc., 23 Mar. 2003. Web. 14 Nov. 2016.
(Cole, Martin, Dennis)
This source is an online scholarly journal that talks about emotional regulation and its
effects on childhood development. It speaks upon the widely adverse range that people
view emotional regulation. I probably wont include this source in my project, but I still
thought it was an interesting read and it gave me some useful information. An unfortunate
drawback is that I cannot access the full article. The authors are credible. Pamela M. Cole
works for the Department of Psychology at Pennsylvania State University. Sarah E.
Martin went to Brown Medical School and now works at Bradley Hosptial, the nations
first neuropsychiatric hospital for children. Lastly, Tracey A. Dennis worked for Hunter
College and the University of New York.

Wiley & Sons Inc., Jan. 2000. Web. 14 Nov. 2016.
(Duncan)
This source is an online scholarly article talking about the effects of poverty on child
development. Deep or persistent poverty early in childhood affects adversely the ability
and achievement of children. Although the 1996 welfare reforms have spurred many
welfare-to-work transitions, their time limits and, especially, sanctions are likely to
deepen poverty among some families. I may include this source in my project depending

on if I stretch out my topic to that extent. Greg J. Duncan works at the institute for Policy
Research, Northwestern University and Jeanna Brooks-Gunn teaches at Columbia
University, both highly esteemed colleges so they are credible.
"ExploreHealthCareers.org." Occupational Therapist. Explore Health Careers, n.d. Web.
16 Nov. 2016.
(ExploreHealthCareers)
This is an article that speaks upon occupational therapy, a type of developmental therapy
to help improve a childs lifestyle, if specialized in adolescents. An occupational therapist
does individualized evaluations, during which the client/family and the occupational
therapist determine the persons goals. They then customize intervention to improve the
persons ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals. They follow-up with an
outcome evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make changes to the
intervention plan. I would use this source in my project because it gives a view into what
can be done when there are problems with child development, like developmental delays,
and gives background information about its effects. The source is Explore Health
Careers, which gives plentiful information on any health career you could think of.
Karoly, Lynn A., and Jill S. Cannon. "Site-wide Navigation." Proven Benefits of Early
Childhood Interventions. RAND Corporation, n.d. Web. 16 Nov. 2016.
(Karoly)
This is an article talking about the effects of early intervention on child development.
Early childhood intervention programs have been shown to yield benefits in academic
achievement, behavior, educational progression and attainment, delinquency and crime,
and labor market success, among other domains. I would definitely include this source in
my project because it represents the great importance that early intervention can have on
a childs life. The earlier developmental delays are recognized, the more likely the child
is to accomplish developmental goals. The authors, Lynn A. Karoly and Jill S. Cannon
are credible as Karoly is a RAND senior economist and a professor at the Pardee RAND
Graduate School and Cannon is a policy researcher at the RAND Corporation. Both have
their Ph.D. as well.

(Kochanska)
This source is a scholarly article written about the influence of parent socilaztion on
childrens temperament. It states that the development of the tendency to experience
affective discomfort, guilt, and anxiety associated with wrongdoing; and development of
behavioral control can lead to the the ability to inhibit a prohibited action, to suppress an
antisocial or destructive impulse, and to perform a more prosocial/desirable behavior. I
will use this source in my project as it gives a healthy amount of information and goes a
lot more into a childs social development than anything else that Ive read. The author,
Grazyna Kochanksa is an accredited professor and the University of Iowa, making this a
trustworthy source.
Lamb, Michael E. "The Role of the Father in Child Development." Google Books. Jonh
Wiley & Sons Inc., n.d. Web. 14 Nov. 2016.
(Lamb)
This is a scholarly article about the role of the father in child development. It examines
different familial situations and how each one effects a childs developments. It asks the
question of how much of a role does the father play and to what extent does it effect child
development in all aspects but especially in terms of social and emotional development. I
would definitely use this source because it gives such an innovative perspective on
development that I had honestly never thought about. I feel like it would bring even more
interest into our project. Again, I unfortunately cannot see the full article, but there is
enough for me to pull out some riveting information. The author of the article, Michael E.
Lamb, is the former head of the Department of Social and Developmental Psychology at
the University of Cambridge, making him an extremely reliable source.
ParentingWeb. "Know Your Child Better By Learning The Ages & Stages Of Child
Development." Child Development Ages & Stages. Child Development Institute,
25 Sept. 2011. Web. 14 Nov. 2016.
(ParentingWeb)
This is an article from a parenting website that talks about the child development ages
and stages. Like my book source, it goes over exactly what occurs during each stage and
what parents can expect to look for in each stage. I most likely wont use this source
because I feel that the book I have gives me more in-depth information. The article is also
pretty short, so it doesnt really expand on each stage much. The bottom on the article
clearly states that, this information does not constitute the practice of medicine or
psychology, so I also dont believe it would be a very viable source.

Szalavitz, Maia. "Hand Gestures Could Make Kids Smarter | TIME.com." Time. Time, 31
July 2013. Web. 14 Nov. 2016.
(Szalavitz)
This source is a magazine article talking about the effects of using hand gestures on your
childs development. In research published in the journal Developmental Psychology,
preschoolers and kindergartners who naturally gestured to indicate what they were trying
to do showed more self-control; an ability associated with cognitive maturity. This source
could be a little outdated as it was published three years ago but it is certainly still viable.
I will be including it in my project because hand gestures are often used with children
how have developmental delays in order to communicate. This article was published in
TIME magazine, an accredited magazine, and the author, Maia Szalavitz is a
neuroscience journalist for TIME.com and co-author of Born for Love: Why Empathy Is
Essential and Endangered, so it is well trusted.
"Speech-Language Pathologist." Career Profile. Truity, n.d. Web. 16 Nov. 2016.
(Truity)
This source is an informative text, talking about the career of speech pathology, also a
common therapy for children with developmental delays. It gives a complete job
description and reveals the duties of a speech therapist. Speech therapy is similar to
occupational in that it can improve developmental delays, but it focuses in on speech
development as opposed to social and muscle development. I would use this source
because it provides a good description of speech pathology and where it can take you for

a career as a whole. The source is truity, a website for finding careers that interest you, so
it gives accurate job descriptions.
