Dear students,
5 £ The goal of the writing center is to help a student improve their viting skills, and to enable them
to discover his or her writing routine, what they prefer to do when they write, and how they
“personally should plan their papers to generate the best possible. I have always been a
Q *faetual/report based writer. That's just how I know to write. The two authors talked about writing
| on your own time for your own benefit. I have never written a poem and felt it was suited for
) “\ anything more than the trashcan. Reports, 99% of the time, are easy for me. I gather some facts
> find the best references. I lke to add my opinion into the mix to give the paper a point of view the
2 reader can relate to. Actually in my peer review those who read my paper told me my first draft
‘was really good, but towards the end sounded like a research paper. It is hard for me to take up
paper space discussing why I like something or how something makes me feel. Usually when I
write about the thing I am interested in I am at my best right when I am thinking about them. For
‘me, that is when the creative juices are flowing and I can get out of myself a paper worth reading,
Thave by no means had a hard time transitioning from a high school English class to my
writing class, and that was what the authors agreed was hardest for students. I suppose the reason
as to why is I already had experience with this type of writing. I was almost always the most active
in my classes in high school, and whenever I had to write for one of my classes I had the freedom
‘to shape a paper however I saw fit, and usually (although there has been a time or two I was way
off the mark) I was on the ball, and had a paper that the teacher was impressed with, Now in UWRT
1104, I have that same kind of freedom. I am use to the routine, and I like it. I really enjoy the
class, and I have already leamed a few things that I have attempted to use in my writings, like this
Reader Response Letter. I honestly have no idea if this is a good piece of writing or not. As lamtyping | can’t help but think this paper is a mess, a splashing of ideas on this paper, but that’s a
part of the process.
I think having access to student tutors is amazing. When I read the chapter it had me
thinking: “so it is a walk in peer review”, and that seems to be the idea. These tutors help you in
the same way we helped each other in class. I have said before feedback is crucial to a writer. How
does this sound? Does it flow well? Does my main idea show through as you are reading? Does it
suck!? All questions [have had before, and itis alway’s a good idea to know the answer before you
tum it in. Lin high school would run my papers by my parents, my friends, my favorite teachers in
other classes, all to know if I am writing a good paper that can stand on its own two legs.
‘They had taken a lot of time to talk about the benefit to foreign students. I can’t really relate
but I do see how it helps. The example they gave, the woman who had to write about a holiday
shoe knew nothing about is similar to when I had to write a 3-page paper on Cinco De Mayo,
holiday literally only celebrated by a small city in Mexico and Seattle (for some reason). If I had
a chance to speak with someone who actively celebrated the holiday I could have come up with a
much better paper than what I did. Honestly I had to repeat information 3 or 4 times to take up
‘enough room on the page for the teacher to accept it.
