typcallyyeldsahghnputmpedance,wewouldlketomodfythefeed.Snce
thecurrentslowattheendsofahalfwavepatchandncreasesnmagntude
towardthecenter,thenputmpedance(Z=V/I)couldbereducedfthepatchwas
fedclosertothecenter.Onemethodofdongthssbyusngannsetfeed(a
dstanceRfromtheend)asshownnFgure1.

Sncethecurrenthasasnusodaldstrbuton,movngnadstanceRfromthe
endwllncreasethecurrentbycos(p*R/L)thssjustnotngthatthe
wavelengths2*L,andsothephasedfferences2*p*R/(2*L)=p*R/L.
Thevoltagealsodecreasesnmagntudebythesameamountthatthecurrent

Intheaboveequaton,Zn(0)sthenputmpedancefthepatchwasfedatthe
end.Hence,byfeedngthepatchantennaasshown,thenputmpedancecanbe
decreased.Asanexample,fR=L/4,thencos(p*R/L)=cos(p/4),sothat
[cos(p/4)]^2=1/2.Hence,a(1/8)wavelengthnsetwoulddecreasethenput
mpedanceby50%.Thsmethodcanbeusedtotunethenputmpedancetothe
desredvalue.

Theadvantageofthecoupledfeedsthattaddsanextradegreeoffreedomtothe
desgn.Thegapntroducesacapactancentothefeedthatcancanceloutthe
nductanceaddedbytheprobefeed.
ApertureFeeds
Anothermethodoffeedngmcrostrpantennasstheaperturefeed.Inths
technque,thefeedcrcutry(transmssonlne)ssheldedfromtheantennabya
conductngplanewthahole(aperture)totransmtenergytotheantenna,as
shownnFgure5.

Theuppersubstratecanbemadewthalowerpermttvtytoproduceloosely
boundfrngngfelds,yeldngbetterradaton.Thelowersubstratecanbe
