Chapter 1
I Can Assist You with That
1. Listen to a dialog. Then, practice it with your friends in front of the class.
Mechanic : Good morning, Nashville Auto Garage, can I help you?
Man
: Yes, I hope so. Im having trouble with my car engine. It wouldnt start this
morning. Can you come to my house and repair it for me, please?
Mechanic : Uhm....what can I say? Mm.... my men are working on some cars right now, sir. I
think youll have to wait for a few hours. What if we come to your house
tomorrow?
Man
: But, I need the car tomorrow.
Mechanic : You could try other garages.
Man
: I want to, but I dont have any contacts. Besides, I have been your loyal customer
for a long time.
Mechanic : I have a friend who might help you. Hes also a car mechanic like me and I can
guarantee that he will repair your car as well as we do. Let me call him for you
now.
Man
: Oh, thats very kind of you to offer. Thanks.
10. Listen to the dialog and fill in the chart below with services that the mechanic
offers. One has been done for you as an example.
Mrs. Carpenter is making a call to a car service station. She wants to find out what is wrong
with her car.
Mechanic
: Good morning, Nashville Car Service Station. Can I help you?
Mrs. Carpenter : Good morning. My name is Rose Carpenter. Id like to ask you about my
car that I sent to your station yesterday.
Mechanic
: Umm... Oh yes... I remember you, Mrs. Carpenter. You sent your blue Audi
car with the registration number C 377 JFK to our station yesterday. Am I
right?
Mrs. Carpenter : Youre absolutely correct. I want to find out what is wrong with my car. Can
you tell me that?
Mechanic
: Sure, Mrs. Carpenter. Wait a minute. Here you are. First, the windshield
wipers have become brittle. They dont work properly anymore. Would you
like me to replace them for you?
Mrs. Carpenter : I see. Thats why they make a weird sound when I turn them on. Okay, I
agree to that.
Mechanic
: Okay. Secondly, the front wheels need alignment. Do you want me to align
the wheels?
Mrs. Carpenter : Sure. I think thats very important.
Mechanic
: Yes, I think so also. Then, your wheels need balancing.
Mrs. Carpenter : Balancing? But, I did that recently. In fact, a week ago.
Mechanic
: Our computer analysis shows that the wheels are not balanced properly. Ill
do the balancing for you if you like.
Mrs. Carpenter : Umm...Im not sure yet, but is that all?
Mechanic
: There are still two other problems.
Mrs. Carpenter : Two other problems? How come? Okay, what are they?
Mechanic
: The fourth, you need to replace the left tail light.
Mrs. Carpenter : The tail light? Whats happened to the tail light?
1

Mechanic
: It wont turn on. Shall I replace it for you?
Mrs. Carpenter : Yes, please do.
Mechanic
: Alright. And now the fifth, last but not least, the radiator.
Mrs. Carpenter : The radiator? Is there something wrong with the radiator?
Mechanic
: Yes, maam. It leaks. I can fix it if you want.
Mrs. Carpenter : Oh my God. How terrible my cars condition is!
11. Listen again and find out how much each service cost and how much the total
cost Mrs. Carpenter has to pay for the service.
Mrs. Carpenter : Could you tell me how much you will charge for the whole service?
Mechanic
: Mm A pair of windshield wipers costs $55, and then the wheel alignment
will cost you $85. And $35 for fixing the leaking radiator, a bulb of tail light
is $15 and the balancing service will cost $45.
Mrs. Carpenter : So, how much is that altogether?
12. In your opinion, what will Mrs. Carpenter do? Will she get the mechanic to repair
her car or will she postpone the repair? Give your reasons. Listen to the end of the
dialog.
Mechanic
: That will be $235 altogether, maam.
Mrs. Carpenter : What? $235? Look, I dont think it will cost me that much. I want every
problem of my car and every detail of the problem written on paper. I will
show it to my husband first.
Mechanic
: Dont worry, maam. Ill do it. Tomorrow, Ill send someone to your house to
make sure whether you will get your car serviced or not.
Chapter 2
Surprise!
1. Listen to the monologs. Then, match the information with the right picture.
Monolog 1
Do you like perfect, red strawberries that are sold in the market? Dont you know that this
fruit turns into a worthy mold specimen, called Rhizopus stolonifer. This mold grows in damp
places, like your fridge, and can cause mucormycosis, a life-threatening fungal infection that
affects the brain, lungs, and sinuses. As the infection progresses, the fungus moves
throughout the body, killing the skin and organs.
Monolog 2
Kite flying is a fun activity to do on a windy day, but it's best that you keep an eye on the sky
to make sure nothing happens. Your life may depend on it. Kites can touch and tangle on
power lines while the user runs the risk of electrocution. Electrocution happens when an
electric current leaves or enters something. This danger is greater during stormy weather, as
the wet kite line increases the chances of electrocution.
Monolog 3
Everyone loves kittens, but these little fur balls aren't just fun. Up to 80 percent of all cats are
infected with, or are carriers of, Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that can cause encephalitis,
eye disease, neurological disorders, and even death. Most people who become infected pick
up the parasite when cleaning the litter box. Normally toxoplasmosis, the infection that T.
gondii causes, isn't a big deal, but, if a pregnant woman contracts toxoplasmosis, the baby
can suffer from blindness, hydrocephalus, and brain damage, or the woman can suffer a
miscarriage.

Monolog 4
2

Life's a beach, right? Well, if you're lounging on a gorgeous, white beach, you should know
that you're sitting in fish poop. Parrotfish scrape algae off coral reefs with their "beaks" and
some of the coral comes along for the ride. The fish, then, grind the coral into little pieces
and, after a short trip through its digestive tract, it is pooped out into the water. One single
parrotfish can create more than a ton of sand a year from this ground coral. In addition, this
sand contains a high amount of E. coli--bacteria commonly found in human feces. You're
actually 23 percent more likely to get sick after a trip to the beach.
2. Listen to the same monolog once again. Then, complete the surprising facts with
the correct words as provided.

see if you were right.
You know what? Last week, I posted a link on Facebook. It was a link to a cute dress I
had found online. The price was about 15 bucks, including shipping, but I couldn't afford
it. You know, I cannot spend all my savings on an expensive dress.
Guess what! A man left a comment saying "You can't buy that one to which I replied
"Why? Is it already out of stock? I want to save for it.... Then, he replied "Because I have
already bought it and we'd look ridiculous wearing the same clothes".
Surprisingly, seconds later I got a call from my father. I thanked him a hundred times,
but he kept playing the game, and said things like "I can't wait to wear it. The color will go
well with my eyes."
11. Listen again to the monolog. Then, compare it with the following dialog.

book emphasizes the importance of focusing on our life purpose, being passionate

Bob : Why is that? After all, theyre just trying to be friendly and start a conversation.
Ade : Well, I dont see it that way. Why are they all so interested in what I think?
Bob : Cut it out, Ade! This is America, the land of the individual. I mean, you are a
foreigner and people want to know your opinion.
Ade : Yeah, Bob. But what if I say something that could offend them? Theyd probably
get mad. Then what?
Bob : Tough luck! They ask you for your opinion, and you tell them. If they dont like it,
then thats their problem!
Ade : That approach certainly wouldnt work back home.
Bob : Well, try it here, and you will see that it works.

Good morning viewers. Its ten oclock in the morning and you are listening to Special

stranded because most public transport could not operate on roads that turned into
rivers. Also, government offices have been forced to close and business activities are
paralyzed. Some schools told their students to study at home. Floods happen in Jakarta
every year, but non-stop, severe rain this year has affected the central business district.
Residents in low-lying regions said that the floodwaters have reached 23 meters high.
Jakartans regularly criticize the government for its slow action to upgrade infrastructure
to avoid disasters. Listeners, thats the first news for today. Ill be back soon with some

Wheeler died of pneumonia at his home in Hightown, New Jersey, on April 13.
Now, we move on the third news. Floods inundate farms and homes in Padang, West
Sumatra. Floods swamped hundreds of hectares of rice fields and dozens of homes in
three districts in Limapuluh Kota Regency due to heavy rainfall in the last three days.
According to regency officials, a number of rivers overflowed and engulfed villages in
Payakumbuh, Suliki, and Guguk Districts. Firmansyah, the head of the Limapuluh Kota
Disaster Mitigation Agency, said that affected schools were forced to stop their activities.
The flooded areas are still inaccessible.
Dear listeners, you are still listening to Evening Headline News on 007 Archid FM. A pod
of 20 whales, which stranded on a beach at the Gold Coast in Australia, have died. This
is our fourth news item. The coast guard found 30 whales on the beach, of which 20 had
already died. The authorities tried hard to push the remaining 10 back into deeper water.
But most of them were already badly injured due to thrashing heavily on a coral reef,
said the coast guard chief, Steve Prado. Whale beaching is a frequent phenomenon in
Australia, yet it remains unexplained in science.
Football lovers, the fifth news is about the match between AC Milan and Real Madrid.
Real Madrid won over AC Milan in a Pre League Premier match at Palermo on Sunday.
Real Madrid defeated AC Milan by a score of 3 to 1. Milan was in the third place on the
number of goals scored, behind Juventus. Facing the defeat, Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti
tried to look on the bright side.
The last news item comes from Tokyo, Japan. An earthquake jolted Tokyo, the Japanese
capital, last night. The spokesman for the Japanese seismological agency said that there
were no reports of casualties or damage. The quake struck shortly after midnight, Tokyo

A senior high school student, Rodradsa, was impressed by Songklods activities. Rodradsa
interviewed Songklod in a TV studio. This is the interview.
Rodradsa : Good morning, Songklod.
Songklod : Good morning.
Rodradsa : Thank you for coming to our studio. We would like to ask you a few questions. I
hope youll enjoy our interview.
Songklod : Ill try my best to answer your questions.
Rodradsa : Okay. Songklod, this is the first question. Why do you do batik painting?
Songklod : Hmm. You know, after escaping death in the tsunami, I took solace in batik
painting. It helps me heal and blot out the bad memories. I feel relaxed every
time I splash bright colors on the cloth canvases.
Rodradsa : Ohthats great. Viewers, Songklod is one of the lucky survivors of the tsunami
in 2004. He was seven years old when the giant tsunami hit his region.
Songklod, would you tell us about your condition before batik painting?
Songklod : Losing our house and seeing my parents lose their jobs really depressed me.
But, batik painting helps me calm myself down. It slowly increases my
concentration and now I feel much better because of it.
Rodradsa : Wow thats a very helpful activity. So viewers, if you want to improve your
concentration, why dont you study batik painting?
Songklod : And if you want to cheer up your friends, encourage them to join a challenging
program. You know, there is a collaborative program between UNICEF and the
Ministry of Educations Non-Formal Education Department. At the beginning it
was an activity to facilitate psycho-social recovery of children and young people
living at the Nong Kok temporary shelter, a home to over 70 households from
Phi Phi Island.
Rodradsa : Unless we experience batik painting, we wont believe that a new life can be
restored through art. Thank you very much, Songklod, for your presence. I hope
youll achieve further success in the future. Good luck.
Songklod : Youre welcome.

Popcorn is one of my favorite snacks. I usually make it by myself. This is the way to
make popcorn. You will need 3 tablespoons of cooking oil, 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels, 2
tablespoons of butter, and some salt to give flavor. It is easy to make it. You only need 10
minutes to make it. First, heat the oil, butter, and salt in a pot over medium-high heat.
When the pot is hot, put the corn kernels into the pot and cover it. After 30 seconds,
gently shake the pot over the heat until the kernels pop. After they have popped, serve
them in a large bowl.

A blender is a useful electric kitchen appliance used to blend food and liquid together.
Use only a clean blender. Put the food you want to blend, such as vegetables or fruits,
into the blender. You can add some liquid, such as milk, or water, or ice cubes. Then,
tightly close the blender lid. Plug in the cable and push the on button. You can also
select the mixing speed by pressing the button that indicates the speed. Blend until the
14

mixture is smooth. Turn off the blender before you open the lid. Lastly, pour the mixture
into a glass.
5. Which equipment is discussed in the monolog?
6. Based on the monolog, which food is not mentioned to be blended?
7. What should you do to make the blender work?
This monolog is for questions 8 to 10.
A pressure cooker is a sealed container for cooking food with the help of water or other
liquid under high pressure. The lid of the pot does not allow air or liquid to escape. The
cooking process is quicker than using conventional cooking methods and, as a result,
saves energy. It is quite easy to use a pressure cooker. For example, if you want to make
meat tender, all you need to do is put the meat, with some water, into the pressure
cooker, and then close, and lock the lid. Then set the timer. When the meat is done, turn
off the heat and let it cool before opening the container to avoid an explosion due to high
pressure.
8. Which cooking utensil is discussed in the monolog?
9. Why shouldnt you open the lid as soon as the cooking is finished?
10. What do you think of cooking with a pressure cooker?
10. Listen and repeat these words.

11. You will hear a monolog about cooking rice. Pay attention to the different ways to
cook rice. Note down all the information you hear.
There are at least two ways to cook rice. The first is by simmering the rice in a pot and
the second one is by using a rice cooker.
The first three steps for preparing rice are the same in both ways. First, rinse the rice
with clean water. When the water is clear, put the rice in a pot or the container of the rice
cooker. Then, pour water as high as about two finger joints into the container.
From here on, the steps are different, depending on the way of cooking you use. If you
cook with a pot, boil the rice until the water is absorbed. Then, move the rice into a
steamer for another 50 minutes. After that, put the rice into a colander. However, if you
use a rice cooker, the steps are much simpler. All you need to do is to close the lid, plug
in the cable and push the cook button. When the rice is done, the rice cooker will
automatically turn to warming mode to keep the rice warm.
14. Listen to an example of a cooking demonstration.
Situation: Farah is a chef hosting a cooking program on TV. Now, she is demonstrating
how to make sambal terasi.
15

Hello! Welcome back! Im Farah and I will tell you how to make shrimp paste sambal or
sambal terasi. Sambal terasi is well-known throughout Indonesia. Try this recipe to make
your Indonesian guests feel at home. Serve it with vegetables and plain rice. Also, dont
forget fried tempe, tofu, and fried salted fish. To make sambal terasi, you should prepare
the ingredients first. You will need some fresh red chilies, one small onion, two small
shallots, one tablespoon of shrimp paste, a pinch of salt to taste, and a little lemon or
lime juice. Now, lets make sambal terasi. First, pound the chilies, onion, shallots, and
shrimp paste finely. Add a little salt to taste. Then, add lemon or lime juice and blend
