ABSTRACT
FACTORS AFFECTING THE DELAY IN DIAGNOSIS OF
TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS IN THE WORKING AREA OF
ABANG I HEALTH CENTRE, KARANGASEM DISTRICT

Background and Objectives: Around the world about 150 million, 220 million, and 382
million people suffer from diabetes continuously in the year 2000, 2010 and 2013. From the
United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Research Study, showed that 25% of patients have
been suffered from retinopathy, neuropathy 9%, and 8% nephropathy when first time been
diagnosed with DM. The DM cases in District Abang, Karangasem that were obtained from
the registery data Abang I Health Centre in the year 2014 showed an increase in the number
of cases of the population in 2013 that is from 59 cases increased to 96 cases. The delay in
the diagnosis of DM that were found in Abang I Health Centre is a total of 34 new cases of
DM and 74% were diagnosed DM for the first time since has come with complications such
as gangrene, retinopathy, and nephropathy. However, no information or previous research that
may explain the reason why this delay occurred in Abang I Health Centre. This study aims to
determine the factors that influence the delay in diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the
working area of Abang I Health Centre, Karangasem District.
Methods: This study is a qualitative study that examines the perspectives views and
information from respondents in the working area of Abang I Health Centre about the reason
for the delay in diagnosis of DM patients with in-depth interviews and focus group discussion
(FGD).
Result and Conclusion: The results showed that the factors that affecting the delay in
diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the working area of Abang I health centre consists of
internal factors, namely the level of knowledge, attitude, behavior and fear or anxiety in the
patient and external factors, namely in terms of health care services, health centre programs,
health centres facilities, management of health services, access to health services, resources
of DM information, economic, family support, social and cultural as well as the role from the
government.
