Reading for all Purposes3. Decoding words with accuracy depends on knowledge of complex spelling patterns and
morphology
a. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. (CCSS:
RF.2.3)
i.
Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.
(CCSS: RF.2.3a)
ii.
Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams. (CCSS:
RF.2.3b)
3. Learning Target(s): I can read CVC nonsense words and sound them out on my own.
4. Assessment: I will observe the students as they are playing the CVC nonsense word game to
see how easily they are reading the nonsense words and what vowel sounds they need to work
on.

5. Materials:
Colored Pencils
Dice
Nonsense Words CVC game (attached below)

6. Essential Questions or Big Picture Statement:

Can I fluently sound out CVC nonsense words on my own?

7. Introduction/Anticipatory Set: This lesson will take place during phonics centers with a
group of students who are in the middle Letter-Name Alphabetic stage and are working with
short vowel sounds and CVC words. This lesson is designed to improve CVC nonsense fluency
so that students can then improve their overall reading and spelling fluency. The activity will
take place around a circle table. I will ask the students what they know about CVC words. Next,
I will bring up how we use nonsense words sometimes. I will then give each student a list of
nonsense words that they have not seen before.

8. ****Step-by-Step Lesson Process:****

1. Guided Practice: (3 minutes) I will hold up the sheet of nonsense words and I will ask
the students to take a minute to look over the game by themselves. I will tell them to
quietly read the words to themselves so they dont disturb the other students.
2. Direct Instruction: (2 minutes) I will pass out the CVC word game. The students will
each have their own sheet. I will tell them that they can play this game with a partner. I
will then give each child a colored pencil and explain the game to them. (Roll the dice,
read out the nonsense word and color in the box.) Keep going until all the boxes are
filled out.
3. Independent Practice: (10 minutes) The students will play the game with their
partners. I will give the students all the time they need to finish the game. I will
observe the students as they are playing to make sure they are staying on task and
saying the words out loud. If a student gets stuck on a word, I will help them. I will
also tell them to look at the word again if they mispronounce it. (Differentiation)
4. Closure: (5 minutes) After the students are done playing the game, I will ask them
which words they struggled with the most. This will allow me to see what they need to
work on and which students need extra help with reading CVC words and which
students need more practice with their nonsense word fluency. I will give the students a
few sheets of paper to take home so they can play the game at home with their family.
