Student offers many comments and questions to support his/her argument throughout the discussion.
These comments further discussion by including: deep analysis (suggest ideas beyond the obvious
meanings), meaningful references to class texts, references to personal experiences that support the
argument, thought-provoking questions, and elements of persuasion. This student is vocally engaged
throughout the discussion, and he/she moves seats to show agreement with and support of arguments
made.
5: 26-29 points
Student offers multiple comments and questions to support his/her argument throughout the discussion.
These comments further discussion by including some deep analysis of and occasional meaningful
references to class texts, some references to relevant personal experiences, a few thought-provoking
questions, and elements of persuasion. This student is vocally engaged throughout discussion, and he/she
moves seats to show agreement with and support of arguments made.
4: 22-25 points
Student offers multiple comments and questions to support his/her argument throughout discussion. These
comments may further discussion through some deep analysis of and occasional meaningful references to
class texts or personal experiences. Many of the comments this student makes are superficial or
hypothetical, but clearly on-topic. This student may offer thought-provoking questions. This student is
vocally and physically engaged sporadically throughout discussion.
3: 20-21 points
Student offers multiple comments and questions to support his/her argument throughout discussion. These
comments usually do not further discussion because they are surface-level and hypothetical. These
comments do not include evidence from or reference to class texts. Some mention of personal experience
is shared, and few questions are offered. This student is vocally and physically engaged sporadically
throughout discussion.
2: 10-19 points
Student offers few to some comments and questions to support his/her argument throughout discussion.
These comments usually do not further discussion because they are surface-level, hypothetical, and/or
unrelated to the topic. These comments do not include evidence from or reference to class texts. These
comments do not include personal experience, and few questions are offered. This student is infrequently
physically or vocally engaged throughout discussion.
1: 5-9 points
Student offers one or less comments and questions to support his/her argument throughout discussion.
Student does not physically engage with the discussion by moving sides when he/she agrees with what is
said. Student offers no text or personal evidence in comment or question.
