Multicultural Lesson Plan 2

The lesson plan title is Rainbow full of hands. The concept is to teach my second grade
students that not every hand is the same. The goal is to teach them about diversity and multiculture. The objective is to provide the opportunity for learning in order to advance
multicultural education, equity and social justice. The materials needed are finger paint, large
construction paper, markers.
Beginning the lesson plan, I would start by asking the students to get into 4 groups of 5,
and get a set of paint (brown, light brown, peach, light yellow) and paper for each group. I
would tell the students to choose the color paint they think fits their skin color most. The
students would then put paint on their hands and create a handprint on the construction paper
connecting to the next handprint. I would then ask the kids to wash their hands and wait for the
paint to dry. After the project is done I would ask them to go back to their seats, hand out an
observation worksheet and ask them to individually write what they see in the artwork.
In ending the assignment, I would discuss with the class what differences they see in the
handprints. They would obviously see a difference in color, shape, and size. Then I would read
the story, Hands around the World and explain to them why they are different, and answer any
questions they ask about being multicultural and diverse. I will send them home with a
worksheet to complete about what they know about their culture.
