UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson plan is part of the unit on Earths Landforms. The main concept of this lesson is to be able to
distinguish between Earths main landforms and be able to illustrate this in a concept map.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given specific guidelines, TLW research and distinguish between the main landforms found on Earth with 80%
accuracy.
Given the list of landforms, TLW create a concept map to illustrate the ways to determine between specific
features on specific landforms with 85% accuracy.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
GLE 0307.7.1 Use information and illustrations to identify the earths major landforms
and water bodies.
ISTE.1c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.
ISTE.2b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and
formats.
ISTE.3b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of
sources and media.
ISTE.5b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and
productivity.
ISTE.6a. Understand and use technology systems.

MATERIALS:
Computers
Projector
Pencil for notes
Landform Notes Handouts
KidSpiration Software
Internet Access to:
Google Search : www.google.com
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of specific landforms on Earth by providing a concept map that
includes examples, characteristics, and images of the landforms.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of TN Science standard 3.0.
We will use handouts and online searches to refer to the usage of Web 2.0 tools and how to creatively create a
concept map.

I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular
lesson.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: (about 10-15 minutes)
Begin by presenting the class with a video that is student created that will introduce the
information that will be used for their project. http://www.teachertube.com/video/landforms-142876
Students will take their own personal notes on each of the landforms mentioned to
get a head start for their concept map assignment. Teacher will pause video throughout in order
for students to take adequate notes.
Teacher will review the concepts mentioned and allow students to repeat what
they wrote down to allow other students another chance to get the information. PowerPoint with
extended notes can be shown if a full review is felt needed.
Procedures: (45-60 minutes)
Before students open their individual computers, the teacher will walk through on the projector a
brief introduction on how to use KidSpiration to create a project.
Teacher will show students an example of the project that is being created in order for students to
have an idea on how to complete it accurately. Teacher will note that the examples shown in the intro
video will be the options that can be used in their projects.
The required information on each of the concept maps is as follows:
A title
5 types of Earths landforms
5 bubbles connecting/describing each one
at least one of each of the following
a well known example
a definition
a common location
an image
an easy way to characterize it
Computers will be distributed to allow students to open their Internet and practice a Google
search as they are led to do so with their instructor.
Students will be instructed on how to use a Google search for images or a more in
depth definition if they need it. The teacher will practice by leading them in searching for a
picture of a hill. Thumbs up method will be used in order for teacher to see if all students are
clear on how to search.
Students will be instructed to begin their work on their own and are allowed to ask questions as
needed. Teacher will walk around the class to view their work as they progress.
Students will complete the concept map of landforms and print out their final project.
Closure: (5-10 minutes)
To complete this lesson, there will be some basic review questions to determine the knowledge
gained about Earths Landforms.
What are some of the main landforms known on Earth that you put in your
projects?
How do you distinguish between an ocean and a lake?
What are similarities and differences between a hill and a mountain?
Students will also be given the opportunity to share their concept maps with the class.
