OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

(Math) Develop number sense.

(Math) Explain and apply the order of operations, excluding exponents, with and without
technology (limited to whole numbers).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, students will:
1. Be able to identify different operations and break down the oerations to be able to complete an
equation with the Order of Operations method.
ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Key Questions:
Are students able to recognize different operations in order to work
towards order of operations?
Products/Performanc Working towards being able to complete a worksheet on the order of
es:
operations.
LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED

Students need their whiteboards and
markers
Worksheets (23 copies)
PROCEDURE
Prior to lesson
In previous grades, students will have learnt how to add, subtract, multiply
and divide.
They know their basic operations
Introduction
Time
Attention Grabber
SAY: What do you think about when you hear the word operation?
2 mins
Assessment of Prior
-Will be done at the beginning of learning activity #1
Knowledge
-Going over basic equations and discussing what operations are
Expectations for
Math is sometimes difficult to grasp so I expect students to be
Learning and
following along and doing their best when it comes to the
Behaviour
whiteboard math.
Advance
1. Go over simple equations
Organizer/Agenda
2. Discuss what an operation is
3. Discuss BEDMAS
4. Break down equations as a class
5. Whiteboard math

Assessments/
Differentiation
Learning Activity #3

DO: Use examples of simple equations

Write on board:
4+3=
15-7=
3x6=
20/4=
SAY: You guys have seen equations like this before, correct?
ASK: What is the operation?
DO: Point to operations if they do not get it
DO: write down these equations:
4x3+25/5
(25+7)+(6x3)
2-16/8
SAY: what would you do if you saw this? (dont let them answer,
just point to the equations)
SAY: Mathematicians have figured out how to do them. They
came up with a term called BEDMAS which explains the order
you need to complete these equations in - which is called the
Order of Operations.
ASK: Do you have any idea of what BEDMAS might stand for by
looking at these equations? Each letter has a meaning.
DO: Write BEDMAS meaning on the board
B Brackets
E Exponents (Remember the word but we will not be focusing
on it its more for middle school)
D Division
M Multiplcation
A Adding
S Subtracting
SAY: We always do these steps in order.
ASK: What step would we do first in these equations?
ASK: what step would we do next?
DO: Go through equations on board step by step - discussion

Whiteboard math
SAY: Please get your whiteboard and whiteboard markers out.
DO: Write this equation on the board
6+7x2 = 20
(25-11)x3 = 42
(16-14)x(4x2) = 16
16/8-2 = 0
SAY: I want you to try and do the equation and hold up your
whiteboards when you are done

Worksheet
2

SAY: Can I get my 2 helpers to hand out the worksheet and I

would like you to get started on it right away. You have until the
end of class, I want you to try your best on it! Remember to use
BEDMAS!
