System Overview

NetNumenN31 Architecture
Architecture

NetNumenN31 Integrated Network Management System is java

based platform independent network management system. Its
architecture is based upon client/server structure. Following
modules constitutes NetNumenN31 NMS.

NetNumenN31 server module.

NetNumenN31 database module.

NetNumenN31 client module.

Integrated Network Management

System
Overview

NetNumenN31 Network Management System (NMS) has

complete set of tools to provide an enhanced network
management across the networks. NetNumenN31 functions at
network layer. Network administrator (NA) can retrieve the
current state of network elements (NE) by logging into
NetNumenN31 server environment.

Structure

NetNumenN31 has well defined structure to support client/server

environment which is well suited for multi-user environment,
where several network administrators (NA) are managing the
same network.
NetNumenN31 Server creates real-time reports by querying all
network elements (NE) through ICMP/IGMP and TCP/IP protocols.
After processing these packets latency time, server computes
their relevant QoS (Quality of Service). According to these
reports, it generates network elements (NE) status over
network. These log files are finally saved in database.
NetNumenN31 Client, which is used by network administrators
(NA) to interact with NetNumenN31 Server; it retrieves all the

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

NetNumenN31 Software Installation Manual (Windows Server 2003 + SQL Server 2000)

information about network elements (NE) status from database.

This helps network administrators to manage:

Network congestions

Node lock down

Denial of services elimination

Topology evolution

The simplified structure is illustrated in the Figure 1 given below.

FIGURE 1 NETNUMENN31 NMS AT NETWORK LAYER

Platform
Independency

NetNumenN31 is completely developed on J2EE API, which

provides a flexibility of cross platform usage. NetNumenN31 is a
software application written in Java, this optimized byte-code,
provides capabilities of enhanced network management system
on any platform whether it is Unix, Sun Solaris, Linux or MS
Windows.

Client/Server Architecture
NetNumenN31 Integrated Network Management System (NMS)
has a robust client/server architecture which is streamlined with
J2EE API.
NetNumenN31
Server

In its architecture, server is responsible to send packets for

calculating latency time and response time of Network Element
(NE). Server stores all such information logs in a database,
which may reside on server or separate dedicated machine.
Such composition of database depends upon the environment in
which NetNumenN31 is deployed. For high performance
deployment, where commercial network contains several 100s of
network elements (NE), a method of separating a database and
installing it on a dedicated machine becomes more feasible.

Chapter 1 System Overview

NetNumenN31
Client

NetNumenN31 Client are not actual client, these are specific

server applications, which get connected with NetNumenN31
Server. Hence, their name should not be misinterpreted here.
NetNumenN31 Client are used by network administrators (NA),
where each network administrator (NA) is responsible for
managing particular statistics related to network elements (NE).
These management tasks include:

Security management

Report management

Topology management

Configuration management

Log management

Fault management

Performance management

System management

NetNumenN31 Client/Server environment is shown below in

Figure 2. This figure represents logical structure of
NetNumenN31 environment, as actual environment is dependent
upon the specific selection of system configuration for
deployment.
FIGURE 2 NETNUMENN31 ARCHITECTURE

NetNumenN31
Client/Server
Communication
Interface

NetNumenN31 Integrated Network Management System is

completely developed in java language; therefore, it does not
support RPC (Remote Procedure Calls). For such communication
purpose, it uses open standards of communication which are
enlisted below:

Installation Specification
While deploying NetNumenN31 Integrated Network Management
System, there are several constraints that must be kept under
consideration. Such issues include:

Installation requirement

Deployment requirement

Resource availability

Installation Requirements
Purpose

Installation for NetNumenN31 is not limited to one machine; its

actual deployment requires several machines. This is based upon
system configuration selection.

General

NetNumenN31 Server; several machine of ordinary specification
for NetNumenN31 Clients can be used. Furthermore, these
machines are used by administrators for particular network
management tasks.

IP Address Planning
Purpose

NetNumenN31 deployment requires an IP planning except for

the minimal configuration because in a minimal configuration,
there is no other system connected to the local IP address;
therefore, system can operate by using real IP address.

to local host IP address (127.0.0.1) until it is assigned to Local
IP address or dynamic IP address. MS SQL Server 2000
database configuration for NetNumenN31 Server cannot be
initiated without such assignment of IP address because JDBC
driver uses TCP/IP sockets to communicate with MS SQL Server
2000.
To assign local IP, meet the following requirements:

Install Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition. Refer to

Installing MS Windows Server 2003 for its installation.

UEP_CAF_FM

UEP_PM

To configure NetNumenN31 with SQL Server 2000, meet the

following requirements:
1. Install Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition. Refer to
Installing MS Windows Server 2003 for its installation.
Note: An alternative Operating System for this purpose is
