b) A loaded narrow car of mass 1600 kg and moving at a velocity of 1.2 m/s is
brought to rest by a bumper consisting of two helical steel springs of square
section. The mean coil diameter of the spring is six times the side of the square. In
bringing the car to rest the springs are compressed by 200 mm. The permissible
shear stress is 400 MPa. Modulus of rigidity may be taken as 84GPa. Determine
the following:
1.
Mean load on each spring.
Side ofthe square section wire.
n.
iii.
Mean coil diameter
iv.
Active number of coils.

UNIT-2

3.

a) A single plate clutch is to be designed to transmit 9KW at 1200rpm. The intensity

of pressure is not to exceed 0.08Mpa and coefficient of friction is 0.2. Assume
uniform wear condition. Find
(i)
Mean diameter and face width of the friction lining if the mean
diameter is 9 times the face.width
(ii)
External and internal diameter of the clutch plate
b) A differentiaJ band brake is as shown in fig Q3(b). The brake is to sustain a torque
of 425Nm; The coefficient of friction between the band and the drum is 0.153.
Determine
(i) Necessary operating force
(ii)Width and thickness of steel band ifthe safe tensile stress in the band is
55Mpa
iii)Section of brake lever if the allowable bending stress is 60Mpa. Take
the depth ofthelever as twice the width.

a) List the factors contributing to dynamic tooth loads on gear tooth.

b) Design a pair of helical gears to transmit 12 kW at 1200 rpm of forged steel
pinion. Velocity ratio required is 3:1. The gear is made ofhigh grade cast iron. Not
less than 21 teeth are to be used on either gear. The teeth are 20 stub involute
form. Helix angle should not be greater than 26.
a) Derive an expression for formative number of teeth on a bevel gear.
b) A two start right hand worm transmits 2 kW at 1500 rpm to a 36 teeth wheel. The

module of the wheel is 5 mm and the pitch .diameter of the worm is 60 mm. The
pressure angle is 14.5. The coefficient of friction is found to be 0.06. Determine;
(i) The center distance, lead and the lead angle
(ii) Determine the forces on the gears.
