Course: Design of Machine Elements II
Course Code: 12 ME 5DCDM2

Instructions:

Duration 3hrs
Max Marks: 100
Date : 23.07.2015

1. Answer any five full questions

2. Missing Data, if any may be assumed suitably
3. Use of Design Data Hand book is permitted
UNIT 1

1.

a) Distinguish between Straight Beam and Curved Beam

b) The Section of a Crane Hook is trapezoidal, whose inner and outer sides are 90 mm
and 25 mm respectively and has a depth of 116 mm. The centre of curvature of the
section is at a distance of 65 mm from the inner side of the section and the load
line passes through the centre of curvature. Find the maximum load that the hook
can carry, if the maximum stress is not to exceed 70 MPa.

2.

a) What is camber? Explain briefly

05

b) Design a Helical Compression Spring required for a load of 1250 N and for a
deflection of 28 mm. The permissible shear stress for the spring wire is 400 MPa.
Spring index is 6. Take G = 84 GPa.

UNIT 2
3.

a) Determine the dimensions of a simple cone clutch to transmit 20kW at 1200 rpm.
The minimum diameter is to be 300 mm and the cone angle is 20O. Assume friction
coefficient as 0.25 and permissible pressure as 0.1 N/mm2. Also determine the
required axial force to engage the clutch.

10

b) A single block brake with a torque capacity of 300 Nm is shown in Fig. 3b. The
brake drum rotates at 200 rpm and the coefficient of friction is 0.3. Determine the
actuating force for the clockwise and counter clockwise rotation of the drum and the
amount of heat generated during braking.

UNIT 3

4.

5.

a) A bronze spur pinion (d = 83MPa) rotating at 600 rev/min drives a cast steel spur
gear (d = 103MPa) at a transmission ratio of 4:1. The pinion has 16 standard 20
full depth involute teeth of 8 module. The face width of both the gears is 90mm.
How much power can be transmitted from the standpoint of strength?
b) What do you mean by formative no. of teeth in helical gears? Derive the expression
for same.
OR

12

a) A pair of bevel gears used to connect two shafts at 60 to transmit a power of 25 kW

at 900 rpm of pinion. The speed reduction ratio desired is 5:1. The teeth are 20 full
depth involute and pinion has 24 teeth. Determine the number of teeth on gear,
module and face width of the gear
b) Enumerate the advantages of worm gear over other gear drives.

UNIT 4
6.

a) With a neat diagram derive Petroffs equation for coefficient of friction in journal
bearings and state clearly the assumptions.

06

b) A full journal bearing having a diameter 75mm and length 125mm supporting a load
of 20kN runs at 1000 rpm. The temperature of bearing surface is 72.8C and the
room temperature is 37.8C. The oil used has a viscosity of 10 cP at 115.6C. Check
whether of artificial cooling is required or not? Assume radial clearance to be
0.075mm & the bearing is well ventilated.

UNIT 5
7.

a) A leather belt 125 mm wide and 6 mm thick, transmitting power from a pulley 750
mm diameter which runs at 500 rpm. The angle of lap is 1500 and the coefficient of
friction is 0.3. If the belt density is 1000 kg/m3, and the stress in the belt is not to
exceed 2.75 MPa, find the power that can be transmitted by the belt. Also find the
initial tension in the belt.

10

b) A 20 mm diameter 8x19 steel wire rope is used with a hoisting drum of 1m diameter
to lift a load of 20 kN. The depth of the mine is 800 m and the acceleration is 3
m/sec2. Determine the number of ropes required, using a factor of safety of 5.
Neglect the tackle weight.
