CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter consists of six sub chapters, they are: Background of the
problem, Statement of the problem, Objective of the study, Significance of the
study, Scope and limitation and Definition of key terms.

1.1 Background of the Problem

Studying literature is really interesting because it will enlarge peoples
knowledge about life, since Literature actually is a work of an author or writer
which contains the essence of his life and his experience as a subject matter.
Jones in Outlines of literature (1968: 1) explains that: By studying
literature people can experience through the imagination. It means that
studying Literature can be used as a way to show and transmit peoples feeling,
thought, and experiences whether it is the real or only the imagination by using
a unique expression through language. It is a kind of way to gain someones
emotion through the story and explore the readers imagination.
In every aspect of human life, people have connection with literary works
directly such as reading novels, watching drama on television or movies and
listening to the radio. From those, which people can get more information
about life. Literary works which are in many forms such as drama, prose or

novel, short story, and poetry, becomes the means to express the thought,
imagination, and feeling such as sadness, happiness, and love of the writers.
One of literary works which is interesting for the writer is novel, because
novel can give a good feeling of imagination for the writer to read. Novel talks
not only about love but also many kinds of aspects in life such as adventures,
life experiences of somebody or even about murder. Reading novels can make
the readers imagination larger and give happiness for them.
Perrine (1972: 5) states, Novel is as universal as languages and has
given pleasure. People have read it or recited it, because it gives enjoyment.
From the statement above, it can be known that reading novels are very
interesting because novels can give pleasure since the readers can imagine
about something happening in the story.
One of the important elements in a novel and other literary works is
character. According to Mc.Crimmon (1983:411), The character is used in
two senses. First, to identify the people who appear in the story, play or poem.
Second is to describe the personality of any of these people, especially those
traits that affect the development of the work. From that statement we can
conclude that the character is used to identify the people that appear in the
story, play or poem and to describe the personality of those people by
identifying the traits that influence the development of the work.
The writer in this study chooses a novel entitled The Chicken Bone Wish
by Barbara Girion as his source of data. This novel is interesting because it is
about a young boy who has no friend, because he drops and trips things. So,

his friend does not like him. Nothing helps until Joshua meets Czar, who
helps him change his personality. So, the writer wants to analyze A Study of
the development of Joshuas personalities in Chicken Bone Wish by Barbara
Girion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

After reading the novel, the writer formulates three problems that will
be answered in his analysis. Those problems are :
1.1.1

How are the personalities of Joshua before meeting Czar?

1.1.2

How are the personalities of Joshua after meeting Czar?

1.1.3 What factors make him change?

1.3 Objective of the Study

Related to the problems stated above, the writer wants to know more
about How are the Personalities of Joshua before meeting Scarz, how are the
Personalities of Joshua after meeting Scarz and what factors make him
change.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The writer hopes this study will improve his knowledge about
Personality. He also hopes this study can help the readers especially STIBAs
Students to understand more deeply about personality.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

The scope of this analysis is Literary apreciation and the writer would
like to limit his study only to the Personalities development of the main
character in The Chicken Bone Wish by Barbara Girion.

1.6 Definition of Key Term

1.6.1

Characters are persons presented in dramatic or narrative works, who are

interpreted by the reader as being endowed with moral and dispassionate
that are expressed in what they say in the dialogue, what they do, and
another character think of him. (Agram,1963:14)

1.6.2

Personality is the total quality of an individuals behavior as it revealed in

his characteristic, habit of thought and expression, his attitude, and
interest, his manner of acting, and his phylosophy of life. (Woodworth and
Marquish,1963:117).

1.6.3 The character is used in two senses. First, to identify the people who appear
in the story, play or poem. Second is to describe the personality of any
these people, especially those traits that affect the development of the
work. (Mc.Crimmon,1983:411).

1.6.4

Main character is a person who figures in a literary work. It is the most

important ones to characterization of major

character, to the

development of the plot, or even to the tone and the implied

significance of the whole work. (Potter,1967:21).

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter is divided into two parts. In the first part, he presents the
review of the related theories which covers Literary apreciation, characters,
characterization, and conflicts. While in the second part, that is the review of
previous study, he reviews a thesis of Petra graduate who also conducts the
study of Personality.

2.1 Review of Related Theories

2.1.1

Literary Appreciation
Literary appreciation is a method of learning about literature. There are

many elements that can be analyzed in the literary appreciation, such as plot,
setting, character, theme, and conflict. In relation of this, Moody (1968:9)
states that:
The appreciation of literature is surely concerned with judgment of complex
works and the majority of work of literary are lengthy novels, plays, poems,
which certainly be concerned with its boarder aspects, such as the unfolding of
the plot, the development of the character, the description of the setting, the
background, and the social problem.
Based on the statement above the writer can say that Literary
appreciation is a method which is used to analyze literary work by unfolding
the plot, describing the character, determining the setting, background and the

social problem. So, we know the type of the plot, the development of the
character, the kinds of the setting, background or the social problem. We can
also discover the relationship of those parts from the beginning to the whole.
Another description about Literary Appreciation is given by Liu
(1999:1). She states that: Literary appreciation involves not only evaluation
but also personal, impressionistic, or emotional apprehension of the work we
read. It means that Literary Appreciation includes the personal and emotional
aspect of reading, so this is more than an evaluation of the work that we read.
After understanding the function of Literary Appreciation, the writer
focuses on analyzing the development of the character because his tittle is The
Development of the Personalities of the Main Character in Chicken Bone
Wish.
The writer applies Literary Appreciation since he has to make a
judgement of the personality of the main characters through his activities, acts,
speeches and also the description given by the author.

2.1.2

Character
One of the element of literary appreciation that is usually used is
character. Robert (1977:10) states that: A character is a person created by a
playwright to carry the action, language, ideas, and emotion of the play. It
means that character in literature is the most important element. It is created
by the playwright to show the

action, ideas, emotion,etc. Through the

characters action, thought, expression, and attitude, a writer conveys his or her

ideas. That is why a story can not be separated from its character. The readers
will be able to get what the author wants to say or reveal in his work by
analyzing the characters.
According to Agram (1963:14) Characters are persons presented in
dramatic or narrative works, who are interpreted by the reader as being
endowed with moral and dispassionate that are expressed in what they say the
dialogue, what they do and what other character think of him. From the
statement above the writer concludes that characters are the persons that
appear in a novel or other literary works who are given moral and
dispassionate which are expressed in the way they speak in the dialogue, their
action and what another character think of him.
Meanwhile, the other meaning of character is given by Scholes
(1981:12), A character is likely to be representative of a social class, a race, a
profession, or may be a recognizable psychological type, analyzable in terms of
this or that complex or syndrome, or may be mixture of social and
psychological qualities. From that definition, it can be said that a character in
a story has a relationship with human beings condition in daily life. Characters
in a Literary works may present some differences in social class, a group of
race, or different profession between one person to another. In short, a
character is the representation of human being with his many sided.
Furthermore, Mc.Crimmon (1983:411) says, The character is used in
two senses of literature. First, to identify the people who appear in the story,
play or poem. Second is to describe the personality of any of these people,

especially those traits that affect the development of the work. Thus, it can be
concluded that each character in a literary work has a specific trait that is
given by the author to distinguish one from another. The giving of specific
trait to the character is known with the term of characterization.
Meanwhile, Woodworth and Marquish (1963:17) says: Personality is
the total quality of an individuals behavior as it revealed in his characteristic,
habit of thought and expression, his attitude and interest, his manner of acting,
and his phylosophy of life. It means that personality is human behavior that
reflected in their characteristic, thought and attitude. It also deals with their
manner of acting in their life.
In the analysis of the development of Joshuas personalities in Chicken
Bone Wish, the theory of character both in the sense of person in the story and
the traits or total quality of the person is used. It is expected that theory of
character can give contribution to the understanding of the main characters
personality.

2.1.3

The kinds of characters

Perrine (1977:495) divides kinds of characters based on the role of the
character in the story into several kinds, such as Major character, Minor
character, Protagonist and Antagonist. Each of them is explained as follow:
2.1.3.1. Major character
Major character is a character that plays an important and prominent
role in the story. It means that a Major character has important role in the

10

story, and their roles in the story are vital and appear almost in the whole
story.
2.1.3.2. Minor character
Minor character is a character that plays an unimportant or less
prominent role in the story. It can be known that a Minor character has
unimportant role in the story, and they are not vitally important for the plot
and therefore appear only for a short period of time.
2.1.3.3. Protagonist
Protagonist is a central/ principal character who is also the
sympathetic hero to readers. It means that a protagonist is a person who has
good behavior in the novel and he will create a good image in the story.
2.1.3.4. Antagonist
Antagonist is the character who provides some sort of contrast for the
protagonist. It means that an antagonist is a person that is contrary to the
protagonist, he has bad behaviour in the novel and he will create a bad image
in the story. Furthermore, Thrall,(1960:81) divides the kinds character into
Static and Dynamic. Each of them is explained as follow:
1. A Static character
A Static character is a character that changes little in the progress of the
narratives. It means that a Static characters personality only changes little
throughout the story. He shows a constant personality. For example: someone
who is kind in the beginning of the story remains kind to the end of the story.

11

2. A Dynamic character
A Dynamic character is a character that is modified by the action
through which he passes and one of the objectives of the work in which he
appears is to reveal the consequences of these actions upon him. From that
quotation, it can be known that a Dynamic characters personality completely
changes because of the action during the storyline. He shows a dynamic
personality. For example: someone who is kind in the beginning of the story
changes into arogant because he becomes a rich person.

2.1.4. Characterization
Characterization is the technique of a writer to reveal the personality and
character.

Hugo

in

The

Encyclopedia

America

(1993:291)

says,

Characterization is the representation of the attitude and behavior of

imaginary persons in order to make them credible to the authors audience. It
means that characterization deals with the attitude and behavior of imaginary
persons in a story, the audience will decide, whether the imaginary person is
credible or not in that story.
While Holman (1986:81) states that: The creation of imaginary person
so that they exist for the readers as lifelike is called characterization. It
means that characterization is the authors way to make the readers
understand about the personality and the image of the character as if that
character life outside the story.

12

According to Bernard Cohen , Characterization is the means where by

an author establishes the illusion like people, with traits and personalities
which a reader can recognize and analize. (Cohen,1963:114). From that
statement, the writer can conclude that characterization is the illusion that is
created by the author to make the readers emerse into the story, analize and
recognize the characters in a story.
According to Jones (1968:84), Characterization has two methods, the
dramatic and the analytic. The dramatic shows what the characters do and say
from their environment and from what other characters think of. An analytic
shows how the characters explain their motives, their appearance and thought.
From that definitions, it can be concluded that characterization has two
methods, the first is dramatic. It deals with everything that the characters do
and say in the story. It is influenced by their environment and what other
character think of him. The second is analytic. It is about the motives,
appearance and the thought of the characters in the story. Some characters
have many kinds of motives and their own thought in the story, and
sometimes another character in the story will be influenced by them.

2.1.5.

Conflict
One of the elements of literary works especially for novel or drama is
conflict. It is one aspect that makes the story more interesting. Holman
(1936:87) states that: Conflict is the struggle that grows out of the interplay
of the two opposing forces in a plot. Conflict provides interest, suspense and

13

tension. It means that conflict plays an important role in developing story to

become more interesting. The conflict happens in the interplay of the story
and it involves two opposing forces in a plot.
Jaffe and Scott (1983:33) state that: Conflict is backbone of the story. It
is that provides us with pattern and direction and give us the essence of the
story going. Somewhere conflict is the basic of principle to arouse and
maintain in a story.. From that quotation, it can be concluded that conflict is
created to increase and maintain the readers interest. It gives direction to
know about the essence of the story.
Furthermore, Havighurst (1968:596) in Exploring Literature says that:
Conflict is a major part of almost all plots in any form of fiction, short story,
drama, narrative, poem, or novel, which provide both interest and suspense.
It means that conflict has important role in almost all plots in many kinds of
literary works. It makes the storyline more dynamic, interesting and full of
tension.
Meanwhile, Warga (1983:112) also states that A conflict is a specific
sort of frustration because it requires you to choose among alternatives, it is not
direct blocking of desire, as is frustration. In conflict, you are always weighing
alternative The writer further thinks that the statement above means that
conflict has similarity with frustration, we have to look for alternative way to
solve it.
The writer concludes that conflict occurs when two characters with
different personalities interact. The two characters may have different desires,

14

purpose, or ideas, which cause a contradiction such as frustration, anger, and

argument, even fight.
After knowing the characteristics of a conflict, The writer concludes that
there are three kinds of conflicts related to Personalities development. They are
physical conflict, social conflict and psychological conflict.

2.1.6. The Kinds of conflicts

Jones (1983:3) states that there are three kinds of conflicts in literary
works, they are:
2.1.5.1 Physical conflict
Physical conflict is usually found that man in conflict with nature or
society. It means that Physical conflict occurs between person against nature
or among characters using body strength.
2.1.5.2 Social conflict
Social conflict is struggle of one person against another person. From
that quotation, it can be known that Social conflict happens between person
against individual or a group in society.
2.1.5.3 Psychological conflict
Psychological conflict is a conflict in which a man struggle against
himself, his conscience, his guilty or simply trying what he is going to do.
From that quotation, the writer knows that Psychological conflict happens

15

between a man against his own feeling. He undergoes a kind of angry, sad,
lonely or deppression.
On the other hand, Conflict in English and Written Literature
(1984:591) is divided into Internal and external conflict. Each of them is
explain as follow:
1. Internal conflict
Internal conflict occurs within a character who struggles to accept reality
or to understand a new idea. It means that internal conflict happens
between a man against himself when he tries to make difficult decision or
when he is dissapointed about the reality in his life. For example: someone
who tries to accept the reality that he doesnt pass the examination.
2. External conflict
External conflict is a struggle between two characters or between a
character against nature, society or faith. It means that External conflict
happens when a person struggles against another person in the story, a
person is threathned by an element of nature, a person against a group of
society and a person against a fact of life. For example: someone who
faces a group of debt collector because he has debt to them.
The writer uses the theory of conflict in the analysis of the
Personalities of Joshua in The Chicken Wish Bone by Barbara girion to give
clues of the cause of the development of the personalities of Joshua after he
meet Scarz.

16

2.2. Review of the Previous Study

The writer reviews a previous study done by Imelda, a graduate of
Petra University English Department with Registration no. 11495124. Her
tittle is The Main Male Personalitys Change in Hawthornes The Marble
Faun. She presented two problems in her thesis, they are:
1. What factors make him change?
2. What kind of change he has undergone?
In Imeldas thesis, she uses content anlysis method in order to give
descriptive information. She also uses personality psychology theory in her
study. Her procedures of data collection are reading the novel, quoting the
evidences and identifying Donatelo changes of personality. Her procedures of
data analysis are classifying the changes of Donatellos personality and
explaining the factors which influence the changes.
As the result, Imelda finds the main character of this novel is
Donatello. The changes of the main male personality happen after Donatello
kills Mirriams persecutor. It is proved that before Donatello has done a sin, he
still has characteristics like animal because his eyes are not yet opened and he
knows nothing about another world. However commiting sin, he learns many
kinds which make him a better man and also change to be a complete human
being who takes the consequences and be responsible for his sin.
There are some differences and similarities between the writers study
and the previous one. The differences between the writer and the previous is

17

on the theory. The previous uses personality psychology and personality

changes theories, But, the writer uses theory of Character, Characterization
and personality theory. Another difference is on the statement of the problem.
The previous takes two problems in her statement of the problem. In contrary,
the writer choses three problems in his statement of the problem. After
explaining the differences, there are similarities between the writer and the
previous. Both of them use qualitative approach and content analysis. They
also analyze the main male character on their novels. The previous analyzes
Donatello as the main male character in Hawthrones The Marble Faun and
the writer chooses to analize Joshua as the main male character in chicken
Bone Wish.

18

CHAPTER III
METHODS AND PROCEDURES OF RESEARCH

This chapter Consists of the approach, Method of research, the source

of data, procedure of data collection, and the procedures of data analysis.

3.1 Approach
The writer uses Qualitative approach to analyze the Personality of the
main character in Chicken Bone Wish By Barbara Girion. In relation to this,
Bogdan and Taylor (1954:4) state, Qualitative methodologies refer to research
procedures which produce descriptive data, peoples own writing or spoken
words and observable behavior. From this statement, it can be inferred that
qualitative approach indicates to research procedures which produce
descriptive data.
Qualitative methods allow people to know another people personally
and to see them as they are developing their own definitions of the world.
People experience what they experience in their daily struggles with their
society. Bogdan and Biklen (1992: 12) state that: A qualitative approach is
descriptive. The data collected are in the form of words or pictures rather than
number. The written result of the research contains quotations from the data to
illustrate and substantiate the presentation. The statement means that in
qualitative approach the data will be analyzed in the form of words. They often

19

contain quotations and try to describe what a particular situation and the
written words are important in the qualitative approach both in recording and
disseminating the founding. Qualitative approach will make easier to describe
the personality in the novel

3.2 Method of Research

Since the writer wants to analyze the Personality of the main
character in Chicken Bone Wish By Barbara Girion, he uses content analysis
method. According to Borg and Gall (1983 :511), content analysis is a
research technique for the objective, systematic, and quantitative description of
the manifest content of communication. Any form of communication that is
usually written, such as textbook, novel, newspaper, magazine, advertisement,
and political speech and often used in conjunction with observation. It means,
this method can be used to analyze the written form of communication, such as
textbooks, advertisement, novels, magazine, compositions, etc.
According to Travers (1968:224), Content analysis refers to a group of
techniques that have been designed for the analysis of the verbal
communications. The techniques are appropriate for the analysis of a great
range of communications including those to be found in the textbook, lectures,
in formal teacher pupil interactions, written compositions of pupils and other
sources. From that statement it can be captured that content analysis is a
technique that used for analysis of verbal communications. The content

20

analysis method are suitable for the analysis of communication such as text
books, lectures, informal interactions, and other sources.
The writer focuses in one of the objective of contain analysis according to
Borg and Gall (1983:512) as follows: To produce descriptive information that
gives a better understanding of what the problems are.
From the quotation above, the writer concludes that in analyzing the
data, he uses one of the objectives of content analysis that produces descriptive
information for his study.

3.3 Source of Data

The writer uses a novel entitled Chicken Bone Wish by Barbara Girion,
as his source of data. It is published in 1978 by Scholastic Inc. New York.

3.4 Procedures of Data Collection

In collecting the data, the writer takes some steps to describe as follows:
3.4.1 Reading the novel.
Firstly, the writer reads the novel carefully. The aim of reading the
novel is to comprehend the content of the story. It is done in order that the
writer can analyze the novel easier.
3.4.2 Quoting Evidences
After reading carefully, the writer quotes the evidences which contain
Joshuas personality.

21

3.4.2.1. Quoting Evidences which contain Joshuas personality before meeting

Czar.
3.4.2.2. Quoting evidences which contain Joshuas personality after meeting Czar.
3.4.2.3 Quoting Evidences which contain the factors that make Joshua change his
personality.

3.5 Procedures of Data Analysis

To analyze the data the writer takes the following procedures:
3.5.1. Describing how are the personalities of Joshua before meeting Czar.
3.5.2. Describing how are the personalities of Joshua after meeting Czar.
3.5.3. Describing what factors make Joshua change his personality.

22

CHAPTER IV
DATA ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH FINDINGS

In this chapter the writer attempts to analyze the data taken from the novel
Chicken Bone Wish by Barbara Girion. This chapter is divided into two
subchapters, which are data analysis and research findings. In data analysis, the
writer presents the description and analysis about how are the personalities of
Joshua before meeting Czar, how are the personalities of Joshua after meeting
Czar, and what factors make him change. In the research findings the writer
presents the result of the analysis in the form of description.

4.1 Data Analysis

4.1.1 The personalities of Joshua before meeting Czar

One day In a school named Deerfield School, Mr. Magliore, a gym teacher
asks the student to go outside to play softball. All the other kids are happy, but
Joshua does not feel the same as his friends, he just buttons his sweater all the
way in the top because it is still a winter season. He does not care with his friends
outside the class. He wants to stay in the class alone. This situation can be seen in
the following quotation:
All Mr. Magliore said was, Outside with the rest of the class, Joshua
I wouldnt tell any of the kids, but I wanted to stay in the room. I could
practice my time tables. Eight times four is thirty two, nine times three is
twenty seven. Six times five is thirty. No matter how many times you say

23

them, they never change. Six times five is always thirty. Not like softball.
(page 1).
This evidence shows that in the beginning of the story, Joshua is not an
active boy. He does not like playing with his friend outside the class. It can be
seen in the dialogue above, when Mr. Margliore asks him to play softball outside
the class, Joshua prefers to stay in the class room. By staying in the class, he can
practice his times table. According to Joshua, mathematic is more interesting
because the number never changes. Six times five always thirty, how many times
we say them, not like softball. This fact also shows that Joshua does not want to
face any challenge such as in playing softball in which the player must be active
and dare to face challenge.
Joshua becomes the last one to come out of the door. He sees the kids
choosing up sides. Mr. Margliore picks Peter Benson and Marjorie Healy to be
captains, and he asks Joshua to join Peters team. But, before the games starts,
Peter Benson warns Joshua not to catch any fly balls. This situation can be seen in
the evidence below:
It was Marjorie turn, Ok. I pick Mary Lou.
Boy, Im going to watch Marjorie extra hard the next time. Im referee. Mr.
Magliore blew the whistle. Ok. Josh, you are on Peters team. Marjorie side
up at bat first.
I walked to the outfield. Thats where all the captains put me. Hardly anybody
in the fourth grade can hit out there.
Peter yelled after me, Hey Wilson, stand way back. And dont try to catch
any fly balls. (page 4)
That evidence shows that Joshua does not have self confidence to catch
any fly balls. It can be seen in the dialogue above, when Mr. Magliore asks Joshua
to join Peters team, he does not feel confidence because he can not play softball

24

well. Then, before the game starts, Peter warns Joshua not to try to catch any fly
balls and he has to stand way back.
The softball game goes on in one inning, Christopher, one of Joshuas
friend is up a bat. He can hit a ball strongly. Joshua and his team try to catch it.
But, he does not have self confidence and he is afraid that he can not catch it. He
also hopes that the ball can go away from him. The situation can be seen in the
evidence below:
Cristopher was running. His team was yelling, Go. Go, Joshua will miss it.
My team was yelling to, catch it, Josh, Catch it. My lunchtime peanut butter
and jelly sandwich was up in the back of my throat. I know how to hold my
hands up like Im catching, so I did and prayed for the ball go away. It was
still coming. So I prayed that all the spit would help it stick to the glove. An
arm pushed me away. Ive got it!. It was Andy. He had run over from right
field. The peanut butter and Jelly slid back into my stomatch (page 5).
From the evidence above, we can see that Joshua does not have self
confidence, It can be seen, when Christopher is running and the ball is flying
straight to Joshua and his team hopes that Joshua can catch it well, anyhow Joshua
does not have self confidence that he can catch it, even he hopes that the ball goes
away and just pray that the ball can stick to the glove. Unfortunately, his
unconfidence makes him feel nervous, luckily Andy can catch that ball.
The game is still running, Joshua gets the ball and he tries to throw it,
but, he is nervous until he has thrown into the wrong direction. It is seen in the
next evidence below:
Throw the ball, throw it. My hands were sweating but I threw as hard as I
could. The ball went fast and straight. Right to the first base. Marjorie crossed
home plate. I didnt realize what had happened until Andy threw his hat on the
ground and yelled, Home, you were supposed to throw the ball home, you, you
KLUTZ!(page 7).

25

From that evidence, the writer identifies that Joshua does not have self
confidence, he is always nervous and always doubtful to do something. He can
not think and act fast. We can see in the dialogue above when his friend ask him to
throw the ball, Joshua gets nervous so that he does not do it well. He throws the
ball into the wrong direction. He does not realize what he has done until Andy
throw his hat on the ground and shout at him.
After the softball game finished, Joshua helps Mr. Magliore carry some of
softball equipments into the office. But, when he nearly comes into the office, He
trips and drops the catcher mitts. Unfortunately, when he tries to pick it up, he also
trips Mr. Magliore so that he drops everything he is carrying. This situation can be
seen in the evidence below:
I was going to tell him that I never saw a softball glove in my fathers office
but I tripped when I got to the two steps by the gym entrance. I dropped the
catchers mitt and when I leaned over to pick it up, I tripped Mr.Magliore with
one of the bats. That made him drop everything he was carrying. (page 8).
From the evidence above, it can be seen that Joshua is a careless boy.
When Joshua and Mr. Magliore are carrying the softball equipment into the office,
Joshua trips while he gets to the two steps by the gym entrance. He drops the
catcher mitt and when he tries to pick it, Unfortunately, Mr. Magliore is tripped by
one of the bats. It makes him drops everything that he is carrying.
On the following day, Joshua is asked by his mother, Mr. Ruth Wilson to
join her go to work in Hillside Hospital. Then, he is introduced to Dr. Corby, the
Director of the hospital. Mr. Ruth says that Joshua can play piano, of course

26

Dr.Corby wants to see it, but Joshua does not like to play in front of anybody. The
situation can be seen in the evidence below:
you know, Dr.Corby, Mom said, Joshua could play the piano in the lounge
for some of the patients.
You play?, Dr. Corby asked me. Now why did Mom tell him? She knows
Im just a beginner and I dont like to play the piano in front of anybody, not
even Mr.Wolfe and hes my piano teacher. (page 12).
From the evidence above, it can be seen that Joshua does not have self
confidence. He feels nervous to play piano in front of people. We can see in that
dialogue when Joshuas mother tells Dr.Corby that Joshua can play piano, he gets
nervous because he does not have self confident to play in front of anybody, not
even His piano teacher, Mr.Wolve.
Then, Dr. Corby takes him into the lounge. There are some old people
there. Joshua wants to give them pleasure so that he plays piano for them, he is
playing The Spinning Song. Everybody loves it, even one of the audience asks
Joshua to play another song, but he can not play it. He only can play that song,
and he can not learn another song quickly. He needs a long time to learn the new
song. This situation can be seen in the evidence below:
That is very nice Spinning Song, Joshua. Next time, another song you learn.
His voice made me sit straighter the way he did. Thank you. But it took me
six weeks to learn this song. I cant learn another one so quick. (page 19)
From that evidence, it can be seen that Joshua does not have self
confidence. He needs a long time to learn something and he does not believe
himself that he can learn it faster. We can see in that dialogue, when the man in
the Hospital Lounge loves his Spinning Song, and asks him to play another song,

27

Joshua directly says that he needs several weeks to learn another one. He can not
learn it quickly.
One day when Joshua has dinner with his family, the phone rings and his
Dad answers it. Someone is on the phone, his Dad gives the phone to Joshua
because it is for him. When Joshua answers the phone, someone on the phone
calls him a stupid boy. After receiving the phone he feels so sad and wonder who
has called. The situation can be seen in the evidence below:
The phone rang. For you,Josh, said Dad. At first all I heard were some
giggles. I thought it was one of those phony calls where the people hang up
withou saying anything.A squeky voice said, Is this Joshua Wilson?More
giggles. I had finished eating, but may stomatch was making a warning growl.
The voice screamed out, Hey, Joshua Wilson, you are klutz! Slam went the
receiver all that was left was the buzzing phone. Dont you want dessert,
Josh? Mother asked me. No thanks. I didnt feel so good. I went to my
room to lie down. I couldnt even keep my shoulders straight. My ears were
hurting from that word, Klutz. I tried to figure out who called. Andy?
Marjorie? It could be any kid in the class. ( page 29).
The quotation above shows that Joshua is a sentimental boy. It can be
seen from the evidence above, after someone calls him as a Klutz on the phone, he
feels so sad. That word really hurts him and he wonders who was on the phone.
When Joshua is thinking who has called him a Klutz, his brother, Benjie
came into the room. He put on his ankle weights because he wants to do his leg
exercises. Joshua is interested in trying to do it so he asks Benjani to lend him the
ankle weights. When he is beginning to practice, his leg catch the cord of Benjie s
lamp and it tipp over. The situation can be seen in the next evidence below:
Benjie rolled off my right leg. Now, both legs up in the air. I put them up.
Now hold them straight and together, while I count to ten. One, two, three....
You wouldnt think ten was such a long time to hold legs in the air. But, it felt
like ten times a hundred, cause he counted so slow. Four, five.... I couldt

28

hold them up anymore. Crash! The weights pulled them to the ground. My
right leg caught the cord from Benjies lamp and it tipped over. (page 32)
From the evidence above, We know that Joshua is a weak boy. He can not
hold his leg on his leg exercise. While Benjie is counting and lifting up Joshuas
leg, Joshua feels that Benjie counts to slow until he cant hold them,
Unfortunately, when Joshuas legs are moving down, they catch the cord of
Benjies lamp and it tipped over the ground.
On the following morning, Joshuas mother wakes him up. She always
does it every morning. Joshua starts to get out the bed, but he feels that something
is wrong with his legs. He can not move freely. He fells there is an iron clamps on
his leg. It is strange that he is afraid that he gets some disease because of the open
window in his room. This situation can be seen in the quotation below:
I started to get out of bed. Ow! Something was wrong with my legs. Every
time I moved I felt iron clamps on the back. I slid my whole body over to the
edge and pushed my legs over the side. Ow! Maybe I had caught some disease
overnight. Benjie always kept the window open. Once in current events,
someone had brought in an article that told about kid getting a disease from
his pet parrot. Anything could fly in our open window! (page 33).
From the quotation above. It is known that Joshua is a weak boy. He is
mentally weak when he knows that his leg getting hurt. He is afraid that he gets
some disease on his leg. When Joshuas mother wakes him up, Joshua feels pain
on his leg. He can not move it freely. He thinks that it something is happening to
him. When he is looking for the solution, he sees that the window has been
opened overnight. Strangely, He has a decision that he has caught some disease
when he sleeps in that night, because once he read in the newspaper that a kid was

29

getting a disease because of the open window. According to Joshua, everything

can fly in his open window.
Joshua has a serious talk with his brother in their room, he says that he
should stop to do leg exercise again. Because Joshua feels that there is something
wrong with his leg after he practices it. If he does it again, his leg must be worse.
The situation can be seen in the evidence below:
I guess I better not lift weights anymore. Benjie jumped out of the bed. Dont
be stupid. Youve got to. Every night. Otherwise your legs will just hurt all
over agiain. (page 34).
From that evidence, the writer knows that Joshua does not have self
confidence. It can be seen in the dialogue above that Joshua does not want to do
leg exercise anymore after getting hurt in his leg. He gives up too early. According
to him, if he gets more exercise, automatically, he will get more pain not only on
his leg, but also on another part of his body. But, his brother does not agree with
him. Benjie tells him that the pain is usuall in the first exercise. If he do the
exercise regularly, the pain will disappear step by step.
Joshua is walking to the window when he sees his mother pouring orange
juice. Then he looks at the thermometer beside flower box. It points at 65
degreess. For Joshua, it is too cold to play outside. In contrary, his mother says
that it is a clear and wonderful day. The situation can be known in the evidence
below:
Mom was pouring orange juice. I walked to the window and looked at the
thermometer that was stuck in the flower box. Its 65 degrees. Dont you
think thats too cold to play outside?. She laughed. Of couse not. Its clear
and lovely. Just right. (page 35).

30

From that evidence , the writer knows that Joshua is a weak boy. It can be
seen in the dialogue above, when he knows the thermometer points at 65 degrees.
Directly, he grumbles to his mother that the weather is too cold and he prefers to
stay home. His mother just laughs and she tells that the weather is okey. It is clear
and save to play outside.
When Joshua has breakfast with his family, suddenly he remembers the
phone he got the night before. He still feels not so good to remember it. Beside
that, today he has to play softball again. So, it makes him reluctant to go to school.
He hopes that the weather will be bad, so her mother will allow him to stay home.
The situation can be seen in the quotation below:
I wouldnt. I remembered that phone call last night. I wished it was as cold as
Siberia and piled up with snow. Then for sure we wouldnt have to play
softball. Because as long as we have to play, everybody will remember what a
klutz I am.(page 35).
From that evidence, the writer knows that Joshua is a weak boy. Joshua is
mentaly weak because he does not want to meet his friend because they will tell
him a stupid boy. It can be seen in the dialogue above, when he has breakfast with
his family, he remembers the phone last night that someone calling him a klutz on
the phone. Although he does not know who was calling, but, he feels depressed to
go to school. It can be worse because that day the student should play softball
again. It makes Joshua does not want to go to school. Joshua hopes that it will
rain, even he imagines that his town as cold as Siberia and pill up with snow.
After having breakfast, Joshua is thinking of how to make his mother allow
him to stay home. So, he makes some reasons. But his mother does not allow him

31

and he still has to go to school and play softball although he does not want it. The
situation can be seen in the evidence below:
But maybe you could write a note, so I wouldnt have to take gym? no.
Josh. Gym will be good for your legs. Mother zipped up my wind breaker.
Youll take a nice hot bath tonight and all the aches will be gone. I thought
of that giggling telephone voice. My throat felt tight. Mother, I think my
throat hurts a little.... She put her hand on my forehead and check. You are
fine, Josh, no off to school. (page 36).
From that evidence it can be identifed that Joshua is a weak boy. He is
mentally weak so he tries to find any reasons for not going to school because he
does not want to face his friend that considers him a stupid boy.
On the folowing day, Joshua joins his classroom and Miss Garett, one of
Joshuas teacher asks the student to read the workbook. All of the student has it
except Joshua. Then, he looks for it to the back of the room. Unfortunately, when
he is passing Marjorie desk, he tripps over something. It makes Joshua fall down
and tipp over a box of chinese checker full of marbels. The situation can be seen
in the dialogue below:
Joshua I dont see your workbook. I pushed the picture to the side of my
desk. Id finish it later. I had to walk to the back of the room to get my reading
book. I was still walking pretty stiff because of my legs and when I passed
Marjorie desk I tripped over something. As I fell I saw her metal lunch box
right in the middle of the aisle. I hit against the game table and a box of
chinese checkers tipped over. All of the marbles spilled out and hit the floor
with a clatter. I bent down and tried to stop them from rolling all over the
room. The kids started to laugh and they got on the floor to catch rolling
marbles. (page 38).
From that evidence, the writer identifies that Joshua is a careless boy. He
tips over something. It can be seen in the dialogue above, when Miss Garett asks
his wordbook, Joshua does not find it. Then, he tries to find it in the back of the

32

class. He is focusing to look for his workbook until he does not see a metal lunch
box in the middle of the aisle. So, he trips over it and his hand catch the game
table and a box of chinese checker tipp over too. That box is full of marbles, so,
all of marbles spill out and hit the floor. Joshua tries to stop the marbles from
rolling all over the room, All of student laugh loudly except Miss Garett. They get
to the floor to catch rolling marbles too. The class become messy because of
Joshua.
Joshua still tries to put the marbles back into the chinesse box, Otherwise,
Miss Garett is really angry, her face looks red, it makes Joshua feel afraid. When
Miss Garett asks him to sit down, Joshua hurries to his desk again but he tripps
over the lunch box, it makes the whole class in hysterical laugh. The situation can
be seen in the evidence below:
Joshua, sit down right now!. Miss Garetts voice ended in a scream. I
hurried back to may seat and tripped over that luch box again. The whole class
was hystorical laughing. This class will come to order.. Miss Garetts face
was beet red. Now Joshua, suppose you stay after school with me this
afternoon explain just why you cant walk up and down and aisle without
tripping. (page 40).
From that evidence, the writer identifies that Joshua is a careless boy. We
can see in the dialogue above, It shows that Joshua is so afraid of Miss Garett. So
when her voice becomes a scream, Joshua hurries to his desk. On hearing that
voice, Joshua get nervous and hurries to his desk. But, he does not see the lunch
box in the middle of the aisle, so, he tripps over again. Suddenly, all of the student
were laughing loudly. This condition makes Miss Garett unhappy, she decides to

33

call Joshua after school to explain why he always tripps something surrounding
him.
The class is silent when Miss Garett looks angry, then, she announces
something that makes all of the student feels sad and angry to Joshua. She decides
that there is no gym that day. Of course, the whole student in the class blame
Joshua as a trouble maker. Being suspected, Joshua is silent, he is really afraid
although he is wondering why everybody blame him because they are not in gym.
The situation can be seen in the evidence below:
I could tell she was trying to think up something terrible. No gym!. The kids
moaned. There will be no gym this morning. Youll stay in the room and
write a composition on Good Manners in the classroom. She started to put
problems on the blackboard. There was a loud whisper from the back. This is
all because of you, you klutz!. My face was hot and sticky and it wasnt just
from tripping. And my throat was really starting to hurt. Why was everybody
blaming me because we werent going to gym?. (page 41).
From that evidence, It can be known that Joshua is a sentimental boy. We
can see on the dialogue above, when Miss Garett decides that all students must
stay in class and there is no gym that day, there is a loud whisper behind Joshua
that tells him a stupid boy. Joshua feels that everybody blames him because they
are not going to gym. Actually, he does not feel that he should be blame. He
wonders why he should be blame. But, That condition makes Joshuas head is hot
and sticky. It also makes his throat starting to hurt. He hopes that he can disappear
from the class in that day.
On the following day, There is a test in Joshuas class . Joshua studies hard
to show that he is not a stupid boy When the result of the test is announced,

34

Joshua and Christpoher get 100 percent. It makes them in the top of spelling chart
in their school.
It was time for the test. Christopher and I marked each others papers and we
both got 100 percent. Miss Garett went up to the spelling chart that was
pinned to the bulletin board. She said, joshua Wilson got moved up to Super
power today and Christopper is in Airbone.(page 45).
From that evidence, the writer identifies that Joshua is a clever boy. We
can see in that dialogue that he can get 100 percent in spelling test. Actually, he
has studied hard for a week. He wants to show that he is not a stupid boy.
Everyday Joshua and Christopher study together seriously. The result is both of
them get 100 percent, it takes them to the top of spelling chart in his school.
Joshua is in the Superpower rank, and Christopher gets Airbone position, this fact
also shows that Joshua is a dilligent student.
In a break time Joshua has lunch with Christopher. They are the last ones
leave the table. The other kids eat their lunch fast so they can go outside and play
basketball. But, Joshua does not do it. He is chewing his lunch slowly while
hoping that the bell will ring so he need not have to play basketball. The situation
can be seen in the evidence below:
At lunch, Christopher and I were the last ones left at the table. The other kids
gulp down their sandwiches so they can go outside and shoot baskets.
Christopher eats fast too. Its just that he has twice as much lunch to eat as
everyone else. Hey Wilson, how come yo chew so slow? Christopher was
watching me eat. Its not healthy to eat too fast. I didnt want to tell him that
if I ate too fast, thered be too much time left to go outside and then Id have
to shoot basket.(page 45).
From the evidence above, it can be seen that Joshua is not an active boy.
He does not like to play outside. We can see from the dialogue when another

35

friends eat their lunch fast in other that they can go outside and play basketball,
Joshua chews it so slowly. He is not interest in basketball. When Christopher asks
him about this, he just tells that it is not healthy to eat too fast, he is shy to tell the
truth that he chews it slowly because if he eats too fast, it will be too much time
left to go outside and he has to play basketball.
While finishing their lunch, Joshua teels Christopher that he knows how to
save a choking person. Joshua knows it because his mother is a nurse.
Christopher bit into an apple. I pointed to it. You know, Christopher, I know
how to save you if you start to choke on that apple. He rolled up his paper
lunch bag. Yeah, how? See, my mother is a nurse. Shes always teaching
me first aid. Say you swallowed a big piece of apple. It could get caught in
your throat and you wouldnt be able to breathe. (page 47).
From that evidence, the writer can conclude that Joshua is a clever boy.
We can see in that dialogue when Christopher bits into an apple, Joshua has an
idea to demonstrate something. He wants to demonstrate how to save a choking
person. He also explains to Christopher as if he is a doctor. He says that someone
who swallowed a big piece of apple can not be able to breath. It can catch in his
throat and makes him difficult to breath.
After having lunch, Joshua and christopher talk each other, but suddenly
Peter Benson and Andy call Christopher to play Basketball. Christopher asks
Joshua to join them, but Joshua does not like basketball, so he rejects it. The
situation can be seen in the evidence below:
There was a tap on the window. Peter Benson and Andy were shooting baskets
and calling for Christopher. Im going to out now. You want to come? No I
dont feel like it. Ill see you after school.(page 49).

36

From the evidence above, it can be identified that Joshua is not an active
boy. He does not like sport, he prefers to sit down until the bell ring. We can see in
the dialogue above, when Christopher invites Joshua to play basketball with Peter
Benson and Andy, Joshua absolutely rejects it. He does not like play basketball
and prefers to wait until the bell ring.
In the next morning, Joshua and his friend has gym. They are standing in
the school yard. Mr. Magliore looks for two captains in that day. Suddenly,
Mr.Magliore announces that the captains for that day are Joshua and Sue
Petterson. Joshua is suprising and he has to choose his teams member quickly.
The situation can be seen in the next evidence below:
Mr. Magliore blew his whistle twice. The two captains for today are Joshua
Wilson and Sue Peterson. I didnt move. Maybe he called out the wrong
name. Marjorie gave me a shove. Go ahead, youre CAPTAIN!.
I had to stand next to Sue. She was lookingthe class over. Everybody was
yelling. Choose me.Choose me. I want to be on Sues team. Cmon,
Sue. Pick me I always thought Mr. Magliore was my friend. Why did he
make me a captain?
Sue picked Marjorie. Everybody yelled. Now it was my turn. My hands were
sweating inside my pockets but my mouth was all dry. The kids were making
so much noise, I could hardly think.(page 80).
From that evidence, it can be known that Joshua does not have self
confidence. We can see in that dialogue, when Mr. Magliore announces the
captains for that day, Joshua does not respond it, he thinks that Mr.Marjorie calls
the wrong name until Marjorie whispers to Joshua that Mr. Magliore calls him. As
a captain, Joshua has to pick his teams member. He feels doubtful when all of the
student yell to him. He can not think fast to pick his teams member. His hands are

37

sweating inside his pockets but his mouth is dry. He surely can hardly think to
pick his teams member as soon as possible.
Softball game goes on the first inning. But, Joshua has to be out because
he runs too fast. He assumes that Andys hit is a home run and there is not
anybody can catch the ball. Meanwile, it is not a home run, it just a long ball and
someone can catch the ball. Joshua has ran in the third base and he can not go
back to the second base. The situation can be seen in the evidence below:
How could I be out? Nobody had tagged me. My ears were still buzzing from
my fast run. She pointed to second base. Sue was standing there with the ball.
Look, look out there. Sue held the ball up. Andys hit hadnt home run. It
was a long pop fly and the outfielder had caught it. I had never look back to
see if the ball had been caught. I was too busy running. And now I was out
because I hadnt gone back to second base.(page 84).
From the evidence above, the writer identifies that Joshua is a careless
boy. It can be seen in the dialogue when he runs as fast as possible after Andy hits
the ball hardly. According to Joshua, it is a home run, so, he can run until the third
base and get a score. Unfortunately, he is wrong, Andys hit is a long pop fly and
someone can catch it. He has never look back to see if the ball has been caught
because he is too busy running. So, Joshua can not gone back to the second base
and he has to be out.
On the following night, Joshua feels depressed because he has another
phone that calls him a stupid boy. This condition makes him feels upset. This
situation can be seen in the evidence below:
That night, right before dinner, I got another one of those telephone calls. The
giggles and then the voice squeking, JOSHUA WILSON IS A KLUTZ! I
just pushed the pieces of chicken around my plate. Whats the matter Josh?
asked Mother. I made the chicken especially for you and youve hardly

38

touched it. She reached over to feel my forehead. I guess her hand is better
than any doctors thermometer. I hope youre not coming down with
something.(page 85).
From that evidence, it shows that Joshua is a sentimental boy. It can be
seen from the dialogue above, when Joshua feels depressed after receiving the
phone that someone on the phone calls him a stupid boy. It happens right before
dinner, so this condition makes him does not feel hungry anymore. He just pushes
his fried chicken around the plate altough his mother has made it especially for
Joshua. Joshuas mother worries about the condition of her son. So she reaches
over to feel his forehead and he hopes that Joshua is not coming down with
something because it will makes him sick.
In conclusion, Joshuas personalities before meeting Czar are inactive,
inconfidence, careless, sentimental, weak, and clever. Joshua is not an active boy
because he does not like to play with is friend. He prefers to stay in the class.
Then, his friend does not trust him, even, he is never picked as team member in
softball game. It makes him feels inconfidence. So, he always do everything in
wrong order. His inconfidence is also signed by when he does not try to learn
harder. He feels that he needs a long time to learn everything. It is also shown
when Joshua easily gives up to do leg exercise after getting hurt in his leg. Joshua
is a sentimental boy because he is easily sad when his friend call him as a stupid
boy. Furthermore, Joshua is mentally weak because he is afraid to meet his friend
that call him as a stupid boy. Then, Joshua is also a clever student because he has
the highest score in Spelling test. He is in the Superpower rank. His cleverness is

39

also shown when he can remember what his mother has learnt to him about
medical knowledge. So,he can demonstrate it with Christopher.

4.1.2 The personalities of Joshua after meeting Czar

Czar is a veteran of Siberian Soldier. His name is Nicolai Ivanovitch
Petrov Romanoff. People usually call him Mr. Romanoff. But, he likes to be
called Czar. Because on the past, he was a Czar of Markovo. He was the leader of
hundreds of Siberian Soldiers. Markovo is a small region in Siberia. Right now, to
spend the rest of his life, Czar lives in the House of Age where Joshuas mother
works. Joshua meets Czar when his mother asks him to join her to go to work.
Joshua likes Czar because he is a Great man, so both of them become friends.
Joshua tells about his daily activities including when his friends always call him a
stupid boy. As a friend, Czar does not want to see Joshua feels sad. So, Czar
teaches him how to increase his confident. He uses a chicken bone to make Joshua
feels confident. He asks Joshua to break the chicken bone and who has bigger
half, he will be a lucky people. When Joshua gets the bigger one, he wishes that
he will be more confident and become a lucky boy.
One day, Joshua is in Czars room. When they are talking, Joshuas mother
opens the door and asks him to go home. But, when Joshua goes out of the room,
he sees a cardboard sign in wrong spelling word. It is hanging outside of the door.
Then, he tells to Czar that the cardboard sign has a wrong spelling. The situation
can be seen in the evidence below:
Mother had the Czars room door open. Lets go Joshua. We walked out.
The cardboard sign that said DONT DESTERB! was still hanging on the

40

outside of the door. I took it off and handed it to Czar.Mr.Romanoff,excuse

me, but you spelled the sign wrong. Vat, vat are you saying? I had
forgotten how the Czars voice could boom. But since my head was full of
feathers, I didnt care. He didnt sound scary anymore. You spelled it wrong,
Mr.Romanoff. Its DO NOT DISTURB! . Are you sure , Joshua? I stood
up straight and squared my shoulders. Sure, Im sure. I am a Super Power
speller.(page 103).
This evidence shows that after meeting Czar, Joshua becomes a brave boy.
He is not afraid to tell his opinion and show what he wants to do. It can be seen on
the dialogue above, when Joshua sees cardboard sign in wrong spelling word
hanging on Czars door, he takes it off and brings it to Czar. Then, he confidently
tells him that the cardboard is not in the right spelling order.
On the following night, Joshua is chased by Benjie. Benjie wants him to
lift weights. In contrary, Joshua does not want it. So, he walks to the bathroom
quickly. But, before closing the bathrooms room, he tells Benjie that he hates to
lift weight and he does not want to do it again. The situation can be seen in the
evidence below:
I walked to the bathroom-quickly. Just in case Benjie took it the wrong way
and decided to rearrange my ears or nose. You know something, Benjie. I
never told you before. I hate to lift weights. I closed the door and waited. I
ran the water and flushed the toilet. Just to make some noise. It was quiet. I
opened the door and poked my head out. Benjie was still standing there with
his hands on his hips. But, I like to watch out you lift. You go ahead, and Ill
learn by watching.(page 110).
From the evidence above, we know that Joshua is a brave boy. He tells to
his brother that he does not like lift weights bravely. It can be seen in the dialogue,
when benjie asks for Joshua to lift weights, Joshua ignores him and walks to the
bathroom quickly. Benjie does not give up and follows him until the bathrooms

41

door. Joshua does not like to be followed. So he talks to Benjie that he hates to lift
weights and he never does it anymore.
On the following day, Joshua and his friends have a camp. When they are
playing, suddenly Christopher falls down from the tree and hits the rock. His
friends are panic. They do not know what to do. In this situation Joshua tries to
calm down. He goes down next to Christopher and looks at his hurt. The situation
can be seen in the evidence below:
Christopher started to moan. Softly at first, then louder. Oh my head, my
head. My legs began to work. So did my arms and I opened my mouth
Marjorie, Marjorie!, dont shake him. If his heads hurt, we cant move him.
Marjorie looked up. Her hand was still on Christophers shoulder. Her nose
was running and her shoulders were shaking. One part of my photographic
mind noticed that she looked pretty gross. I shook her. Stop crying. That
wont help him. I bent down next to Christopher. Its okey, Christopher. Im
going to see wheres your hurt. I looked at his head and lifted up his hair.
There was a big scrape where Christophers head hit the ground. Thats
probably why he didnt answer us right away. He was knocked out. I got
scared when I saw the blood coming out of the scrape but I tried not to let the
other kids know.(Page 128).
From the evidence, it can be identified that Joshua is a calm boy. He is not
panic although Christopher gets injured. We can see in the dialogue above, when
Joshua and his friends have a camp, suddenly Cristopher falls down from the tree
and his head hits a rock. It makes Christopher unconcius for several times. This
condition makes all of Joshuas friends get panic. In fact Joshua has been
surprised too. But, he tries to calm down and makes the condition into the right
order. When he sees that Marjorie is shaking Christophers head, Joshua screams
to her stopping it. Because if Christophers head is hurt, it will be worse. Then,
Joshua goes down next to Christopher, he tries to help Christopher and wants to

42

see his condition. When he looks at his head and lifts his hair, Joshua see a big
bleeding scrape. He gets scared too, but, he tries to calm down so that the other
kids do not know it.
Christopher is still getting hurt. While Joshua tries to help him, his friends
just look at him and do nothing. They do not know what to do. On the other hand,
Joshua gives commands to them in order to save Christopher. The situation can be
seen in the evidence below:
Marjorie and Sue were holding hands and crying. Peter Benson had a very red
face. His cheeks were puffed out as if he were trying to hold back his tears.
Andy was wiping his eyes and nose on his sleeve. Hey, cmon everybody.
Weve got to help Christopher. I was trying to remember what Mom had told
me about emergencies. Marjorie, youre the fastest. You go get Mr. Magliore.
Tell him Christopher feel and hurt his head and his ankle.. Marjorie got up
and started down the trail. I remembered the buddy system. Hey Peter, Peter
had his head down. Peter, you go with Marjorie. No ones supposed to be
alone in the woods.(page 129).
The evidence shows that Joshua becomes a good leader. He think and act
fast in order to save Christopher. We can see in the dialogue, when Joshua tries to
help Christopher, another kids just stand in front of him and do nothing. They act
differently. Marjorie and Sue are holding hands and crying, Peter Benson has a
very red face, and Andy is wiping his eyes and nose on his sleeve. Joshua can not
wait anymore. So, he gives some commands to them. He asks Marjorie to go get
Mr.Magliore and tells him about Christophers condition. Then, he also asks Peter
to accompany Marjorie because it is too dangerous if someone goes alone in the
forest.
While Marjorie and Peter look for help, Joshua takes care of Christopher
carefully. Suddenly, Christopher is getting cold. Joshua puts off his sweatshirt.

43

Andy and Sue also put off their sweater. Then, he tries to calm Christopher down
by saying that help will come soon. The situation can be seen in the evidence
below:
Christopher, dont worry. I unzipped my gray sweatshirt. Mom had been
right about it getting cold. But she didnt know Id need it to keep Christopher
warm. Andy, you and Sue give me your sweatshirts. The two of them pulled
of their shirts. Eventough the sun was out, it was cool in the woods where the
tall trees blocked out the suns rays. The ground must be freezing.
Christophers teeth were making noise as they rattled against each other. I kept
talking as I covered him with the three sweatshirts. I wrapped them as tight as
I could. Christopher, youre all right. Youre fine. Just stay still and Mr.
Magliore will be here in a minute. I checked his head. It was just bleeding a
little bit. I took a tissue from my pocket and wiped the blood off as best as I
can.(page 130).
From the evidence above, the writer identifies that Joshua is an attentive
boy. It can be seen from the dialogue above. When Christopher is getting cold,
Joshua puts off his sweatshirt to make him warm. He also asks for Andy and Sue
to do the same thing. He wraps them as tight as he can until Christopher feels
warm. Joshua keeps talking to Christopher and he checks Christophers head. It is
bleeding. Joshua wipes it as fast as possible with tissue. He tries to handle
Christophers injury fast and he gives first aid before their teacher come.
After waiting for some time, finally Joshua hears Mr.Magliores whistle. He
is very happy because Christopher can be saved. Mr. Magliore is very proud of
Joshua. The situation can be seen in the evidence below:
We heard Mr. Magliores whistle and saw him follow Marjorie and Peter
Benson up the trail. Mr. Magliore could stand and blow that whistle in my ear
for the next five hundred years, I was so happy to hear it. He took a good look
at Christophers head and ankle. He patted me on the back. Nice work, Josh.
Youre a real take-charge guy when the chips are down!.(page 131).

44

That evidence shows that Joshua is a dependable boy. He takes care of

Christopher until Mr. Magliore comes and help them. We can see in the dialogue
above. When Christopher gets an accident, Joshua is the only one who takes care
of him. He gives Christopher first aid and keeps him warm. He does it until Mr.
Magliore comes to rescue them. Mr. Magliore is very proud of Joshua, He tells
him that Joshua has done a good job. According to Mr. Magliore, Joshua has the
same level as a Hero.
Christopher has been brought to hospital. Christophers mother and his
sisters wait there. Then, Christophers mother gives her salutation to Mr. Magliore
for calling her so quickly and taking care of Christopher until the ambulance
comes. Mr. Magliore just smile and he says that Christophers mother has to thank
Joshua, because he takes care of Christopher before the teacher comes.
Christophers mother smiled at Mr. Magliore. I want to thank you for calling
so quickly and taking care of Chris until the ambulance came. The wrinkles
in Mr. Magliores forehead had straightened out when he heard the good news.
He had his regular big smile as he shook his head. Im not the one you should
thank. He puthis hand on my shoulder. Heres the young man who sent for
help and kept Chris quiet and comfortable until the ambulance came. It was
very quiet in the waiting room. Then Christophers mother put her hands on
my shoulders. The pressure made me look up into her eyes. I just want you to
know Joshua, that I am proud that Christopher has such wonderful, self reliant
boy for a friend.(page 135)
This evidence shows that in the end of the story, Joshua becomes a
dependable boy because he can save his friend from a fatal injury, and it makes
everyone feels proud of him. We can see in the evidence above, when Christopers
mother gives her salutation to Mr. Magliore, he puts his hands on Joshuas
shoulder and he says that Joshua has to be appreciated too because he is the young

45

man who send for help and keep Christoper quiet and comfortable until the
ambulance come. For a while, the waiting room becomes quiet. Then,
Christophers mother puts her hands on Joshuas shoulder and she says that she is
very proud of him.
In conclusion, Joshuas personalities after meeting Czar are brave, calm,
good leader, attentive, and dependable. Joshua becomes a brave boy because he is
not afraid anymore to tell his opinion and what he wants to do. Then, Joshua
becomes a calm boy because he is not panic when Christopher gets injured in
school camp. Even, Joshua becomes a leader to help him until Christopher can be
saved. Joshua also an attentive boy because he tries to keep Christopher from cold
weather by giving his sweater. Moreover, Joshua is dependable because he can
keep Christopher feels comfort until Mr. Magliore comes to rescue them and
Christophers mother feels proud of Joshua because he has saved her son. Even,
She says that Christopher is a lucky boy because he gets a friend as good as
Joshua.

4.1.3. The factor that make Joshua change his personality

Joshua is not an active boy. He also does not have confidence. Moreover,
his friend at school also make him live underpressure. They always think that
Joshua is a stupid boy. At home, Joshua is always disturbed by his brother. Those
conditions make Joshua feels uncomfortable and he hopes that it can be changed.
Fortunately, Joshua meets Czar, the one who helps him increasing his confident.
Czar is a veteran of Siberian Soldier . Joshua meets Czar when his mother asks

46

him to join her to go to work. Right now, to spend the rest of his life, Czar lives in
the House of Age where Joshuas mother works. Joshua likes Czar because he is a
Great man, so both of them become friends. Joshua tells about his daily activities
including when his friends always call him as a stupid boy. As a friend, Czar does
not want to see Joshua feels sad. So, Czar teaches him how to increase his
confident. He uses a chicken bone to make Joshua feels confident. He asks Joshua
to break the chicken bone and he manages to convince Joshua that who has bigger
half, will be a lucky person. When Joshua gets the bigger one, he wishes that he
will be more confident and become a lucky boy.
Since then, Joshua always keeps the bone in his pocket. Czar asks him to
bring it because it will make Joshua become a lucky boy. It seems that what Czar
tells him has really. When Christopher has an accident in school camp, Joshua is
the only one who is not panic. Even, he becomes a leader who help Christopher
until he can be saved. So, Czar effort to increase joshuas confidence has
successfully done, and a small chicken bone is big enough to give Joshua some
confidence that things can get better. The following evidence will show what Czar
does to convince Joshua that he can be abetter person.
One day, when Joshua is in Czars room. Czar tries to make Joshua feels
confident by breaking the chicken bones. The one who has the bigger half will be
a lucky person. At the beginning, Joshua always gets the smaller part, but, Czar
always reminds him not to give up too fast. Czar believess that joshua can get the
winning piece. After trying for a while, finally Joshua gets the bigger half. Then
he wishes that he will be more confident and become a lucky boy.

47

The Czar picked out a large wishbone. Now close your fist around your half
of vishbone. Dig your elbow into table and vun, two, three,
PPPPUUUULLLL.... I did. I looked down. I still had the shorter piece.
Nevermind. That vas better. Ve try again. Ven I say three, you pull up vith
your
thumb
vith
all
your
might.
Vun,
two,
three,
PPPPPPPUUUUUUUULLLLLL.... No good. I still have the smaller piece.
Well, one thing for sure, the Czar didnt believe in letting kids win just to
make them feel good. I looked at the window sill. There were a lot of
wishbone left. I put my elbow on the table. Vun, two, three,
PPPPUUUUULLLLL.... Vun, two, three, PPPUUUUULLLL....
The Czar reached for another wishbone. Wait a minute, Mr. Romanoff. I
jumped up. I won that time. The bigger half was in my hand. Look, I got it.
I got it!. Vat? Let me see. The Czar looked at the piece of bone in my
hand. He saw it too. I had the winners piece. He slapped me on the back.
You see, you did it. I told you. I looked down at the winning piece. I really
had broken it. Fair and square. The Czar slapped me again. Now you keep it
alvays in pocket for luck. He stood up. Ve have toast now. I closed my eyes
as I put the wishbone in my pocket. I waited to feel different. Like when you
have a birthday and expect to feel a year older. (Page 98).
Czar tries to help Joshua to change his personality. Czar motivates Joshua to
be more confident. Actually, he has a unique way to do it. He uses a chicken bone
to make joshua increases his confidence. He manages to convince that he will be a
lucky boy because he gets the bigger part of the bones. Czar also teaches him how
to struggle and never gives up although Joshua always gets the smaller piece.
Finally, Joshua gets the winning piece and he wishes that he has more confidence
and he never trips over everything anymore.
Then, Joshuas mother opens the door and asks him to go home. But, when
Joshua goes out of the room, he sees a cardboard sign in wrong spelling word. It is
hanging outside of the door. Then, he tells to Czar that the cardboard sign has a
wrong spelling. The situation can be seen in the evidence below:
Mother had the Czars room door open. Lets go Joshua. We walked out.
The cardboard sign that said DONT DESTERB! was still hanging on the
outside of the door. I took it off and handed it to Czar.Mr.Romanoff,excuse

48

me, but you spelled the sign wrong. Vat, vat are you saying? I had
forgotten how the Czars voice could boom. But since my head was full of
feathers, I didnt care. He didnt sound scary anymore. You spelled it wrong,
Mr.Romanoff. Its DO NOT DISTURB! . Are you sure , Joshua? I stood
up straight and squared my shoulders. Sure, Im sure. I am a Super Power
speller. You see, said the Czar. He slapped me on the shoulder. Its
working already. He gaves me a big wink and shut the door.
Whats working, Joshua?, asked Mother. What did Mr. Romanoff mean?.
A nurse car came rolling down the hall. I stepped on the side before Mother
told me to watch out. It never even touched me. Oh nothing, Mother, just a
special secret we have.(page 103).
This evidence shows that after getting the winning part of the bone,
Joshuas wishes likely be come true. His confidence raises although he does not
realize it. He is not afraid to tell his opinion and show what he wants to do. It can
be seen on the dialogue above, when Joshua sees cardboard sign has a wrong
spelling, he takes it off and brings it to Czar. Then, he confidently tells him that
the cardboard is not in the right spelling order. That condition makes Czar happy
and he believes that his effort to increase Joshuas confidence has successfuly
done. Besides, when a nurse car comes rolling down the hall, Joshua steps on the
side fastly. Even, his mother does not warn him to watch out.
In conclusion, Czar is the person who help Joshua changes his personality.
As a friend, Czar does not want to see Joshua feels sad. So, he tries to increase
Joshuas confidence. He has a unique way to do it. He uses a chicken bone to
make Joshua feels confident. He asks Joshua to break the chicken bone and he
manages to convince Joshua that who has bigger half, will be a lucky person. Czar
also teaches Joshua how to struggle and never gives up although Joshua always
gets the smaller piece. Finallly, when Joshua gets the bigger one, he wishes that he
has more confidence and he never trips over everything anymore. Then, Joshuas

49

confidence raises although he does not realize it. Even, when Christopher has an
accident, Joshua is the only one who does not panic and he can be a leader until
Christopher can be saved.
