Lesson Topic: Substance Abuse: Impairment Goggles Lesson

Grade: High School Health (9th-12th)
Date: November 17, 2016
Lesson Objective: The students will have a full understanding of the dangers of
alcohol by rotating through four different stations and completing a worksheet with
questions regarding each station to show their mastery of the dangers of drinking
alcohol.
State Standards: 6.3 Analyze the physiological effects of substance use and abuse.
6.4 Identify the psychological effects of substance abuse.
6.9 Discuss how a persons enabling and denial can contribute to abuse of alcohol and
other drugs.
The Students Will Be Able To: Demonstrate an understanding of the four stations that
they will be rotating through: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Baby, Walking the Line,
Driving Under the Influence, and Throwing and Catching while wearing Impairment
glasses.
Introduction: Once students come into class and seat themselves into one of the four
stations, I will give a brief description of all the activities. We have been discussing the
negative effects of alcohol on the body for a couple of days so this activity will reinforce
what they have learned with both visual and physical aids and give them a better

understanding of those effects. Students will be given their Impairment Goggles
worksheet to complete as they rotate through the four stations.
Instruction: Once the students have settled and gotten their names, date, and period
on the Impairment Goggles worksheet, I will give instructions for each station.
1.) Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Baby: Students will look at the baby and see if
they notice any distinguishing physical characteristics. They will list five
characteristics on their worksheets. They will also do a Google search for three
places that parents may go for help.
2.) Walking the Line: Students will wear the 0.10 Impairment Goggles and walk a
blue taped line on the floor. After each student completes the task, they will write
down what they experienced personally and what they noticed with their peers on
their worksheet.
3.) Driving Under the Influence: Students will take turns driving a remote control
car around cones placed on the floor while wearing 0.08 Impairment Glasses.
They will then answer the questions on the worksheet pertaining to this station.
4.) Catching and Throwing: Students will get into pairs and take turns wearing a
pair of the 0.08 Impairment Glasses while throwing and catching a ball.
(Badminton works well for this too, but the birdie broke during the first class so I
just used the small rubber balls for the rest of the classes.) Students will then fill
out the section four of their worksheets explaining what it was like for them.
Questions & Prompts: Before we begin at each station, I will make sure that each
group is performing their activity correctly and address any further questions that they
may have.

3
Guided Practice: I will walk around to make sure that each group is performing their
activity and that they are answering the questions for each section.
Individual Practice: Students will work on their own and with their group to complete
the questions for each section on their Impairment Goggles worksheet.
Closure: We will discuss what their thoughts are after completing each station and
address any questions/comments they may have. They will also complete the Closure
question on their worksheet. I will collect their worksheets to ensure they
understood/mastered the activity/material.
